THE TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST OCTOBER 29, :00 AM CHORAL EUCHARIST, RITE II Service Music from The Christ Church Mass, Sir David Willcocks ( ) Voluntary Allegro Giojoso John Cook ( ) Welcome and Announcements Christ Church Christiana Hundred WELCOME! Wherever you are on your spiritual journey, we are glad you are with us today to join in the worship of God and to share in Christ s presence given to us in the sacrament of bread and wine. You are welcome here. THE WORD OF GOD Ruth Beresford Please stand, as able, and sing The Entrance Hymn 450 All Hail the Power of Jesus Name! (blue) Hymnal 1982 Celebrant People Celebrant Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be God s kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. All sing Gloria in excelsis
Collect of the Day Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, increase in us the gifts of faith, hope, and charity; and, that we may obtain what you promise, make us love what you command; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Please be seated for The First Reading Deuteronomy 34:1-12 Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho, and the Lord showed him the whole land: Gilead as far as Dan, all Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Western Sea, the Negeb, and the Plain that is, the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees as far as Zoar. The Lord said to him, This is the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, I will give it to your descendants ; I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross over there. Then Moses, the servant of the Lord, died there in the land of Moab, at the Lord s command. He was buried in a valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth-peor, but no one knows his burial place to this day. Moses was one hundred twenty years old when he died; his sight was unimpaired and his vigor had not abated. The Israelites wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days; then the period of mourning for Moses was ended. Joshua son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, because Moses had laid his hands on him; and the Israelites obeyed him, doing as the Lord had commanded Moses. Never since has there arisen a prophet in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face. He was unequaled for all the signs and wonders that the Lord sent him to perform in the land of Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his servants and his entire land, and for all the mighty deeds and all the terrifying displays of power that Moses performed in the sight of all Israel. At the conclusion the People respond, Thanks be to God. The Choir sings Psalm 90:1-6, Domine refugium Chant: C. Hylton Stewart ( ) Lord, thou hast been our refuge, from one generation to another.
Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever the earth and the world were made, thou art God from everlasting and world without end. Thou turnest man to destruction; again thou sayest, Come again ye children of men. For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night. As soon as thou scatterest them they are even as asleep; and fade away suddenly like the grass. In the morning it is green and groweth up; but in the evening it is cut down, dried up and withered. Turn thee again, O Lord, at the last, and be gracious unto thy servants. O satisfy us with thy mercy and that soon: so shall we rejoice and be glad all the days of our life. Comfort us again now after the time that thou hast plagued us; and for the years wherein we have suffered adversity. Show thy servants thy work, and their children thy glory. And the glorious majesty of the Lord our God be upon us; prosper thou the work of our hands upon us; O prosper thou our handywork. Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be; world without end. Amen. The Second Reading 1 Thessalonians 2:1-8 You yourselves know, brothers and sisters, that our coming to you was not in vain, but though we had already suffered and been shamefully mistreated at Philippi, as you know, we had courage in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in spite of great opposition. For our appeal does not spring from deceit or impure motives or trickery, but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the message of the gospel, even so we speak, not to please mortals, but to please God who tests our hearts. As you know and as God is our witness, we never came with words of flattery or with a pretext for greed; nor did we seek praise from mortals, whether from you or from others, though we might have made demands as apostles of Christ. But we were gentle among you, like a nurse tenderly caring for her own children. So deeply do we care for you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you have become very dear to us. At the conclusion the People respond, Thanks be to God. Please stand and sing The Gradual Hymn 680 O God, Our Help in Ages Past Hymnal 1982 The Gospel is carried into the congregation so that we remember it is our Good News to hear and to share. The Gospel Reading Matthew 22:34-46 Priest The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest? He said to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them this question: What do you think of the Messiah? Whose son is he? They said to him, The son of David. He said to them, How is it then that David by the Spirit calls him Lord, saying, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet? If David thus calls him Lord, how can he be his son? No one was able to give him an answer, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.
Priest The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. Once the Book of Gospels has returned to its place of honor, the people may be seated at the invitation of the preacher. The Sermon Testing the Limits: Trusting God to the Limit Ruth Beresford Please stand for The Nicene Creed Celebrant Let us declare our faith in God: People We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. A member of the parish leads the prayers from our midst. The Prayers of the People Gathered by the Holy Spirit and renewed in the Word, let us pray to God for the needs of the world. Each prayer ends with everyone saying, Let us pray. Gracious God, we thank you for the gift of your creation, so beautiful and wonderful, given to us to preserve and protect. We are your stewards, O God. Give your wisdom to our president, Donald, and the leaders of all nations, that there may be peace and provision for all people. We pray for refugees searching for safety, for those whose lives are devastated by natural disaster, and for those who are afraid because of terrorism and violence. We pray for our nation, our region, and the City of Wilmington. Encourage us to strive for justice and peace, trusting your great goodness above all else. We want your peace, O God. Beloved God, we thank you for giving the Church your Spirit s power. We pray for Michael, our Presiding Bishop, and Kevin, our Bishop-elect. We lift up N., and our outreach partner, N. Guide and sustain us as we follow Christ, and make us faithful witnesses in word and action. We are your Church, O God.
Awaken our hearts to your presence in all people in those familiar to us and those who are different from us. Help us to answer your call to love our neighbors and to trust your love. We are made in your image, O God. Lord, comfort and strengthen those in any need or trouble and those for whom this is a testing time. We pray for all who are sick in body, mind, or spirit, for N., and for those we name now. [pause] Let them discover your love through the care and support of others. We are your people, O God. We pray for those who have died and for the people who miss them, for N., and for those we name now. [pause] May all find peace and strength in you. Help us to trust in your promise of eternal life. In you we live, O God. The Celebrant adds a closing prayer. People Amen. Please kneel, as able, for The Confession of Sin The Celebrant bids our prayer. People Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Celebrant Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. The Peace Priest People The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. THE HOLY COMMUNION Being seated, we begin with a time of offering, giving money as a sign that our life serves God s purposes and showing our gratitude for God s many blessings. For those who give online, a card is available in the narthex to participate in the act of offering. Pledges for 2018 s offering may be placed in the plate. Newcomers and guests may place the welcome card in the offering plate as well. Anthem Hans Leo Hassler ( ) Cantate Domino, canticum novum: cantate Domino omnis terra. Cantate Domino, et benedicite nomini eius: annuntiate de die in diem salutare eius. Annuntiate inter gentes gloriam eius, in omnibus populis mirabilia eius. Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, and bless his name: announce his salvation from day to day. Announce among the nations his glory, and his wonders to all peoples. Please stand and sing The Presentation Hymn 380, v. 3 Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow Hymnal 1982 Members of the Stewardship Committee and Vestry collect the pledges given and present them to the Rector. The Consecration of Pledged Gifts The Great Thanksgiving (red) Book of Common Prayer 361
God The Celebrant continues the prayer, inviting our praise in the ancient song of the Sanctus. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: The Celebrant continues the prayer, inviting our acclamation of Christ s sacrificial death and triumphant resurrection, saying Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Celebrant and People Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The Celebrant continues the prayer, concluding All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. The Celebrant invites the People to say the prayer Jesus taught his first disciples. The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread We sing the anthem at the breaking of the bread, which is Christ s Body, broken for us. Please be seated after the sacrament is presented.
All are welcome to receive the sacrament of Christ, kneeling or standing, either consuming the bread and drinking from the cup or dipping (intincting) the bread carefully into the cup. Gluten-free host are available; let the clergy know your need when they approach you at the rail. If you are unable to come forward, ask an usher to let the clergy know. Communion Anthem David Ashley White (b. 1944) Bread of heaven, on thee we feed: for thy flesh is meat indeed: ever may our souls be fed with this true and living bread; day by day with strength supplied through the life of Him who died. Voice of heaven, thy Blood supplies this blest cup of sacrifice; Lord, thy wounds our healing give, to thy cross we look and live: Jesu, may we ever be grafted, rooted, built in thee. Please stand for The Post-Communion Prayer Celebrant Let us pray. People Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Blessing The Celebrant blesses the People. People Amen. Hymn in Procession 334 Praise the Lord, Rise Up Rejoicing Hymnal 1982 Dismissal Priest People Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.
