Well, you are not alone. Consider the opening stanzas from the poignant poem entitled May Magnificat written by Fr. Gerard Manley Hopkins, S.J. in May of 1878 just eight months after his ordination to the priesthood (to read the poem in its entirety you may visit May is Mary's month, and I Muse at that and wonder why: Her feasts follow reason, Dated due to season Candlemas, Lady Day; But the Lady Month, May, Why fasten that upon her, With a feasting in her honour? Fr. Gerard Manley Hopkins Ancient Roman culture linked the month of May to Flora, the goddess of bloom and blossoms. This led to the custom of ludi florales (or floral games) that took place at the end of April at the Circus Maximus as a prelude for entering into the month of May. Despite the nefarious intentions ascribed to the Church by some people over the years, it makes perfect sense for the Church to have tried to evangelize the world by means of transforming even secular/pagan customs, enlightening them with the truth of the Gospel. But what does this have to do with the Blessed Virgin Mary? It is quite possible that the allusions to new life in Spring and to flowers suggested a logical connection for Christians to the role of Mary. In the medieval period, the rose was seen as symbolic of the Virgin Birth, as expressed in Dante's phrase, The Rose wherein the Divine Word was made flesh, and depicted in the rose windows of the great gothic cathedrals, from which came the Christmas carol, 'Lo, How a Rose 'ere Blooming.' The popular Litany of Loreto includes the invocation of Mary as Mystical Rose among others. The lion s share of Hopkins poem referenced above contains a beautiful description of the miracles of nature that spring forth each May, seeing in them a fitting tribute to her motherhood. Mary is able to see with that world of good, Nature s motherhood. It is absolutely true that nature rejoices and magnifies God s glory in May, perhaps like no other month in the year. It is a beautiful and busy time, without question the busiest month here at the Cathedral, with Confirmations and graduations. The custom of specifically dedicating the month of May to the Blessed Virgin finds its first reference at the end of the 13 th century. The Catholic Encyclopedia discusses the origin of May devotions: The May devotion [to our Lady] in its present form originated at Rome where Father Latomia of the Roman College of the Society of Jesus, to counteract infidelity and immorality among the students, made a vow at the end of the 18 th century to devote the month of May to Mary. May devotions blossomed following the encyclicals of Pope Leo XIII dedicated to Mary and the Rosary between 1883 and As Elizabeth exclaimed to Mary at the Annunciation: Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb and Mary is truly the mother of my Lord, (Luke 1:42-43). Moreover, she is rightfully

5 Page 5 invoked as the Mother of God, (cf. Council of Ephesus, 431 A.D.) One of the highlights of our Centennial pilgrimage to Italy in March was a visit to the Catacombs of Priscilla which boast the earliest known surviving image of the Blessed Mother, a fresco dating from around 200 A.D. While enjoying this month, let us fittingly honor our Blessed Mother by praying the Rosary and offering thanks to God for the gift of our spiritual Mother. I conclude with another portion of Hopkins poem. Their magnifying of each its kind With delight calls to mind How she did in her stored Magnify the Lord. I invite you to join us at 9:00 a.m. Monday for Memorial Day Mass. We ll sing patriotic hymns and pray for our beloved dead who made the ultimate sacrifice. The U.S. Flag will grace the area near the pulpit. Speaking of flags- it is most appropriate for us to fly both the American and Minnesota flag each day on the garden flagpole. Despite their high quality, these flags really take a beating from the strong winds on Cathedral hill, and need to be replaced every few months. The U.S. and Minnesota flags cost $150 and $120 respectively. Might anyone be interested in sponsoring a flag in memory of a Veteran loved one? Last Sunday was a big day for Palestinian Catholics. Pope Francis canonized two Palestinian nuns, St. Marie-Alphonsine Danil Ghattas ( ) and St. Mariam Baouardy ( ). He also met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, discussing greater diplomatic relations between the Holy See and Palestine. Thanks to a gift from a Cathedral couple, with additional support from the Heritage Foundation, the Cathedral will soon feature a beautiful new custom-made wooden welcome/information desk. It will be situated near the Ushers room, and will serve as a convenient place to welcome tour groups and others before large Masses. Its use will develop over time, and calls to mind similar desks I have seen in other Cathedrals in both the United States and Italy. In my April 12 column I lightheartedly noted my objection to Minneapolis being named the nation s healthiest city. What about St. Paul, I mused? Well this week a new poll ranked the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area the second fittest in the U.S. In other words, the cities were evaluated together. But in yet another poll, Minneapolis and St. Paul tied for best city parks, evaluated separately. Moral of the story national polls can t figure us out! Sincerely in Christ, Fr. John L. Ubel, Rector Well but there was more than this: Spring's universal bliss Much, had much to say To offering Mary May. UPCOMING EVENTS AT THE CATHEDRAL This coming Saturday, May 30, eight men will be ordained to the priesthood by Archbishop Nienstedt in a ceremony beginning at 10:00 a.m. It is a great day of rejoicing all throughout the Archdiocese. All are invited. In June, the month of the Sacred Heart, a group of priests and laity is planning a prayer vigil of reparation to the Sacred Heart to be held here from Thursday evening, June 11, at 7:00 PM and closing with an 8:00 PM Mass on Friday evening, June 12, the Feast of the Sacred Heart. The nighttime portion of the vigil will be held in the Cana Chapel. Stay tuned for more information. CATHEDRAL CALENDAR Mass, Confessions, Eucharistic Adoration, and tours are listed on page 4. 7 Page 7 VOICES FROM THE ARCHIVES Ordinations and the Cathedral of Saint Paul In September, 1851, Bishop Joseph Cretin ordained a French seminarian in the log cabin Cathedral of Saint Paul. The first American-born priest ordained by Bishop Cretin was ordained in the second Cathedral of Saint Paul on Sixth and Wabasha in Until 1884, all ordinations for the Diocese of Saint Paul were performed in the third Cathedral at Seventh and St. Peter Streets; Father John Ireland was ordained in the third Cathedral on December 20, When the St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary (College of Saint Thomas) opened in 1885, ordinations were performed in the Chapel of Saint Mary at the College. From 1895, a year after the completion of the Saint Paul Seminary, to 1919, ordinations were performed in the auditorium of the Saint Paul Seminary. The last ordination at which Archbishop Dowling officiated less than six months before his death was held on June 9, 1930, not in St. Mary s Chapel on the Saint Paul Seminary campus, but in the Cathedral of Saint Paul. The men who were ordained in 1930, the first ordination in the fourth Cathedral of Saint Paul, saw an interior moving toward completion the work of Archbishop Austin Dowling. Eric Hansen writes that Dowling, brought his own highly developed aesthetic sense to the project, offering suggestions at every turn. Just as the exterior was the result of John Ireland s vision, the interior was the fruit of Austin Dowling s flawless artistic instinct, which suffused the daunting space of nave, transepts, and dome with warmth and serenity. Excerpts from To Work for the Whole People, by Mary Christine Athans. Note from Saint Paul Seminary: On Saturday May 30, 2015, eight men will be ordained to the priesthood in the Cathedral of Saint Paul. Please pray for these men as they prepare to serve the Church and the world as servants of the Lord. REMEMBRANCE, THANKSGIVING, CELEBRATION Work of Mercy: May.
