8 8 Frequently Asked Questions Why was there a need for a new translation? A new translation was called for by Pope John Paul II, who having celebrated Mass in many different languages realized that there were significant differences in meaning among the translations into these different languages. As part of the Jubilee Year 2000, he promulgated the Missale Romanum, editio tipico tertia (the Third Typical Edition of the Roman Missal). With this new Latin text, new translations were needed for all languages in which the Latin Rite is celebrated with the intention of producing a more uniform expression of the prayers in the different languages. What is different about the new translation? While the third typical edition is substantially the same as the previous editions, there has been a change in the methodology used in translating from the original Latin text to English. The methodology used in the previous translation was known as dynamic equivalence, which was an attempt to provide a general sense of the original text. The methodology of the new translation is known as formal equivalence, which renders a more precise translation of the original Latin. The result of the change in methodologies presents a richer articulation of the original Latin texts and offers a more formal approach to the communal worship of the Church. What was wrong with the old translation? As described above, the new translation uses a different methodology and is not intended to be a value judgment on the previous translation. Are we going backwards with this new translation? No. The new translation leads us toward a richer understanding of our faith, drawing the community into a more profound encounter with Christ our Savior.

9 Why are we going back to the Latin Mass? 9 The new translation is not regressive. Rather, it is an enhancement of the usage of the vernacular in our worship as the Catholic community. Why are we using language that is archaic and unintelligible? Worship as the Catholic community is unique and calls for more formal expression than everyday language usage. The words in the new translation that people might consider archaic or unintelligible are words that are rooted in Scripture and the Catholic liturgical culture extending through the centuries of our rich tradition. How does this affect the music we sing? Only the Mass settings will change because the words used in our responses can no longer be supported by our current music that has been composed for the Mass settings. Music publishers are currently preparing new music for the new Roman Missal responses. Why are the words important when God already knows what is in our hearts? God does know what is in our hearts. The words, however, are not for God but for us. We come together as individuals, and the words are intended to form us into a community that praises, worships, and gives thanks to God. If the Church has gone to so much effort with this translation, why were the references to humanity not made gender-neutral? The Church does not intend for its language to be gender exclusive. The translation is seeking a more precise rendering of the original Latin. Why are we now going against Vatican II? We are not. This is the same Mass that has been celebrated by the Church since the Second Vatican Council. Why are we wasting time on a new translation when the Church and the world have so many other immediate problems? The language of worship is intended to form us for mission. Through the words prayed, our worship brings a deeper understanding of discipleship, which empowers us to address these problems in a Christ-centered manner. Won t people leave the Church because of these changes? Change is always a difficult process. The new translation is intended to help unify the Church by bringing us to a deeper understanding and articulation of the faith.

10 10 When will this take effect? The First Sunday of Advent, November 27, This means we have a full year to prepare for the implementation of the new translation in our parishes. While we are not be permitted to use the new translation of the Roman Missal before this date in our celebration of the Mass, parishes should be prepared and practiced for the reception of the Roman Missal on November 27, More detailed answers are being prepared and will be posted on the Diocesan New Roman Missal web page.
