3 SECOND READING James 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27 GOSPEL Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, HOMILY PROFESSION OF FAITH I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. It may not have been as popular as the U.S. Marines slogan, We re looking for a few good men, but I really liked it. Why? I was raised in a family that lived by Benjamin Franklin s axiom, Early to bed, early to rise Much of my childhood was framed within the context of the belief that life was worth living, and the last thing we should want to do is fritter away the day in bed. Get up get going! Today will never repeat itself. Of course, Franklin wasn t the only one who believed that. The author of Proverbs (6:9) wrote 2400 years earlier: How long, O sluggard, will you lie there; when will you rise from your sleep? So we come to the seventh and final capital sin, that of sloth. While working in seminary formation, I occasionally challenged seminarians for being late to Morning Prayer, or missing it all together. More than one said that he felt he was being treated like a high school student, to which I responded, Well then stop acting like one! Calmer heads eventually prevailed, but I was trying to make a point. Lazy seminarians will likely turn into lazy priests, and there is nothing worse than oversleeping for a morning Mass! So what exactly is sloth? St. Thomas Aquinas took a stab at it when he first quoted another respected writer, St. John of Damascus, d. 749 AD. In his work (De Fide Orth. ii, 14) St. John described it as an oppressive sorrow, which, to wit, so weighs upon man s mind, that he wants to do nothing Hence sloth implies a certain weariness of work He further characterized it as sluggishness of the mind which neglects to begin good (Summa Theologica II-II Q. 35 A.1). Put simply, we neglect our duties on account of the labor they require. It is really much more than laziness; it is a form a spiritual sadness that prevents us from even beginning that which we know we need to do. The task seems too arduous, so we fail to even start. What are we to do when we feel stuck like this? I propose that the best approach is to break down that which is overwhelming into much smaller and more manageable pieces. For example, the amount of work that needs to be done in this magnificent church is truly unending and indeed overwhelming. We are still trying to pay off the roof debt from more than 15 years ago and everywhere you look it is possible to find something else. So, we simply need to chip away, little by little at the list. This summer we began the work on the restoration of the stained glass Rose Windows, an expensive enterprise at just over $100,000 per window. But the image of an 80 year-old window falling out in a storm, or simply from crumbled lead was too much to bear, so we made a decision to repair them. Deferred maintenance, while at times necessary, is never optimal. I see it as a sacred duty to maintain this building for future generations. Our sacrifices now will bear fruit. In the end, it will all be worth it. When I need a reminder, I stroll into the Founders Chapel to see the countless names of those who sacrificed $5, $10 or $25 at the beginning of the last century, and know in my heart that their sacrifices were worth it. What if they had waited until everything was optimal before embarking? I think we all know the answer to that. Here is some simple advice that I have found to be valuable. If you tend to procrastinate, attack the problem at its source. Form the habit of doing

5 Page 5 what needs to be done before what you would prefer to do. Knock off the most distasteful chore right away when you are fresh. So sorry to mention it, but kids, when school starts, I suggest that you begin your homework by tackling the most difficult class, not the easiest. Don t hit the snooze button. Get up right away. Once your feet hit the floor, the hardest part of getting up is over! You ve won! Sloth goes beyond the mere physical act of being lazy. It is characterized by an attitude that too often tries to squeak by with the littlest effort, taking a minimalist approach. It is this attitude that we can attack this much is completely in your control, even if so much else is out of your control. I ask your prayers for the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia next month, at which Pope Francis will offer the closing Mass. It is an important prelude to October s Synod on the Family in Rome. We must pray that the Holy Spirit will enlighten these gatherings, enabling all participants to see the beauty of marriage and family, with special attention to families and marriages in need. Here in the U.S. there has been a lot of campaign talk about building a wall along our southern border. But on August 17, bulldozers arrived unannounced on private property to resume construction of a Separation Wall wall near Bethlehem in the West Bank of Israel. Eerily reminiscent of the Berlin Wall, but much taller (25 ft!), it effectively separates Palestinian Christians from the nearby agricultural lands. The Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem has condemned this wall, and the families have appealed to the Supreme Court of Israel. How heartening to see that several thousand people attended a rally at Planned Parenthood last week in response to the horrific undercover videos recently released. People are taking notice. My heartfelt thanks to all Cathedral folks who attended. Abria Pregnancy Resources, a new pro-life crisis center, opens its doors very soon just across the street from there and I heartily encourage you to support this organization, a successor to the Highland and University Life Care Centers. Hurricane Katrina made landfall ten years ago yesterday. Assigned at the time as a faculty member at the seminary, I left for graduate studies in Rome ten years ago today. I vividly recall watching the news while waiting in the Detroit airport, as it was becoming increasingly clear that the extent of the damage was just beginning to be known. It felt so eerie to be leaving just as the levies were giving way. Seizing the moment We all ought to be mighty proud of the three vacationing American friends, who in a split-second, decided to subdue an attacker brandishing an AK-47 (Kalashnikov) on a train to Paris. Two of them serve in the military, and the third is a college student. They sprang into action, and most assuredly saved many, many lives. But is this type of attack the new normal? Sincerely in Christ, Fr. John L. Ubel, Rector REMINDER: SATURDAY EVENING MASS TIME CHANGE BEGINS NEXT WEEKEND Beginning next Saturday September 5, 2015, the Anticipatory Mass will be moved from 7:00 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. I am very grateful for the feedback that I have received regarding this change. 7 Page 7 VOICES FROM THE ARCHIVES The Altar and Baldachino - I Though Masqueray s designs for the chapels of the Blessed Virgin, Saint Joseph and Saint Peter were completed before his death in 1917, Archbishop Ireland kept to himself the work of completing the altar in the new Cathedral. In 1917 Whitney Warren was appointed by Ireland... to produce an appropriate main altar and baldachin. Charlotte Hill Slade, daughter of James and Mary Mehegan Hill, had seen the recently completed Grand Central Terminal in New York, and was impressed by its architect Whitney Warren. Warren had much to recommend him. Like Masqueray, he was a graduate of Ecole des Beaux Arts and had worked with him in New York. He was the architect of several Manhattan landmarks-- the Biltmore and Commodore Hotels, among them. But, as Hansen, writes, Although he had no experience in ecclesiastical architecture, he was chosen because... Charlotte Slade, the altar s donor, wanted a fellow New Yorker to receive the commission. Warren was commissioned to produce preliminary designs in April At the end of August they were presented to a dying Archbishop Ireland who opted for the simplest: a colonnade of six twisting columns surmounted by a bronze crown. By July 1918, C.H.F. Smith of the Executive Committee, was handling the correspondence for the failing Archbishop, and later that month Smith met with Warren s representative on preliminary designs and work went forward-- slowly. With the death of the Archbishop Ireland in September, however, the work stopped. But with the accession of Archbishop Austin Dowling in March 1919, the work on the altar and baldachino resumed. Marble for the six columns ordered earlier was still on the way from Italy in 1921 prompting a series of letters from Dowling to Warren and McBride Studios to hurry the delivery along. Dowling, who wrote frequently to Mrs. Slade regarding the progress of the baldachino, asked and received a detailed report on the delivery of the marble. McBride wrote: There are two finished columns on board the S.S. Etna on their way to America... the step work is in St. Paul stored in one of the unfinished chapels. The balance [of the marble] is on the S.S. Adour. Part of the cornice work is on the S.S. Ansalto. The shipment of the baldaquino marble which arrived on the S.S Esther Dollar was shipped to St. Paul on December 9th. The two columns remaining unfinished are promised for early in January. With this detailed report, he sent a photo of an Italian marble worker polishing one of the twenty-four feet unfinished columns, with the note: The work is in progress. ACSP. REMEMBRANCE, THANKSGIVING, CELEBRATION Work of Mercy/September. The Centennial Work of Mercy for September is an opportunity to provide clothing for the needy--and to work with a neighboring Summit Avenue parish, the Saint Thomas More Community. The parish has a long history of providing clothing for people in need. Their Swap Shop, open on Saturdays during the school year, has been a successful operation for years, doing the work of mercy in the Cathedral Hill neighborhood. Cathedral parishioners can help fill up hangers and shelves with donations of gently used clothing in all sizes. Look through closets and pack up clothing to add to Thomas More s Swap Shop. And look in Centennial Notes next week for details on where and when to drop off your donations. RITES BAPTISM We welcome those who have been newly baptized. Please pray for them as they continue to grow in Christ. Paul Anthony Turner MARRIAGE Please join us in praying for all couples preparing for the sacrament of Matrimony.
