He generally characterizes them as paradoxes that is, the standards of the world are turned upside down as soon as things are seen in the right perspective in terms of God s values, so different form those of the world. (p. 71) Pope Benedict cited a clever phrase from St. Bernard of Clairvaux, who coined a phrase employing a play on words (please forgive the double negative), recognizable only in the original Latin. Porro impassibilis est Deus, sed non incompassibilis roughly translated Again, God is impassable, but he is not incapable of compassion In other words, though God himself does not suffer, He is able to suffer with us. Compassion literally means to suffer with, and it is imperative for us to see God in this vein, as a compassionate and loving Father. The phrase concludes, to whom it is characteristic always to show mercy and to spare us. Blessed are they who mourn. What better way to show the upside down reality than through slavery, man s total disregard for the sanctity of all human life? The second half of the beatitude continues, for they shall be comforted. Pope Benedict wrote of two kinds of mourning: the first is the kind that loses hope, the kind that eats away and destroys man from within. But the second is the mourning occasioned by the shattering encounter with truth, which leads man to undergo conversion and to resist evil. (Jesus of Nazareth, p. 86) The second beatitude is symbolized by the life of St. Peter Claver (on the cover). His story is remarkable and moving. The historic reality of chattel slavery is one of the worst stains upon the western hemisphere, and Peter Claver s work amongst those emerging from the hulls of slave ships earned him the respect and admiration of countless people in 16 th century Columbia. You ll notice some interesting details from the stained glass window. The saint is holding a cross, his arm extended in gesture of blessing. On the left side, one can see the flowing waters of baptism, as St. Peter is said to have baptized nearly 300,000 slaves in the course of his ministry. Six are pictured on one side of the window, bowing their heads as they prepare to receive the life-giving sacrament. But Peter Claver also knew that he must first feed people s bodies, and he holds in his arms a basket of food. Waiting in the port, Peter Claver would immediately enter an arriving ship and head down to the hull. There he would distribute whatever he had been able to acquire through begging bread, fresh fruit (so many died of scurvy caused by a deficiency of Vitamin C) and even sweets Unusually, the window also depicts a cruel slave owner, poised to unleash his whip upon any unruly subjects. On the right side of the window may be found the society women of Cartagena, who too often chided the saint for caring too much about the slaves, and not others. I suspect that his ministry pricked their dull consciences! But truth be told, it was the leading women and men of society whom Peter made so uncomfortable! The expression on their faces is one of exasperation, perhaps in part because when Peter Claver visited the slaves whom he baptized, he did not stay in the quarters of the plantation owners, but went directly to those whom he had baptized. He called himself Slave of the slaves of God. God is not incapable of suffering with us, for He is a God of compassion. When we see the suffering of Christians in the Middle East, seeing the
5 Page 5 photos of their fearful faces, clutching their children close to their hearts, nomads wandering for a new homeland, we may feel utterly empty inside. In a real sense we are mourning the loss of their home, even though we do not know them personally. If those who mourn will be comforted, it stands to reason that someone must comfort them. It is not God alone, but we too have roles to play here. But I believe that it is solid theology to maintain that the Father himself is not without feeling. God weeps, as Pope Francis said movingly in Philadelphia, with respect to the abuse crisis. The insightful comment from 3 rd century theologian Origen sums it up: When we cry to him, he has mercy and shares the experience of suffering: because of love he tastes something which, from the point of view of his sublimity, he cannot experience. (Homily on Ezekiel, 6,6) Bless me father, for I have This spring I predicted 73 victories for the Twins. They ended with 83! While they fell a little short of the playoffs, I think most fans would have been quite content in Spring Training to know that their team would improve by 13 games and finish in 2 nd place. The future looks bright, with some newfound power (rookie Miguel Sano hit 18 homers in just 80 games) and an exciting outfield. I believe that Torii Hunter will retire (perhaps he ll coach next year?), but there are younger players to step up. I know that the Twin Cities Marathon is a traffic mess for all associated with the Cathedral. But there is nothing we can do about it so we might as well embrace it. I was pleased to be able to offer a blessing to a runner who requested it, snap a photo or two, and witness plenty of runners going into the Cathedral to offer a prayer following their successful completion of the 26.2 mile trek. Interestingly, the course record for the TC Marathon is now thirty years old. Last Sunday s winning time by Kenyan Dominic Ondoro was about a minute shy of Clinton, IA resident Phil Coppess record time of 2:10:05, set in That s surprising because of improved training techniques. Coppess came out of nowhere and had the race of his life, but retired just two years later after being slowed by injuries. Acknowledging the strong views on both sides, I hope that Congress can rally to pass sensible safeguards that could prevent mentally unstable people from purchasing firearms. While I am cognizant that at some level this determination could be quite subjective, I simply do not see how increased background checks and waiting periods prior to a purchase would violate one s 2 nd amendment rights. With respect to straw purchases, there ought to be stiff penalties for selling guns to a second party. Held on or near October 7, the Children s Rosary Pilgrimage is one of my favorite events of the whole year here. Archbishop Hebda led the prayers, and it was so encouraging to see a Cathedral filled with Catholic school children, their voices resonating to the heavens in honor of the Blessed Mother on a beautiful fall day. October is the month of the Holy Rosary, and I heartily encourage this prayer. Sincerely in Christ, Fr. John L. Ubel, Rector CATHEDRAL CALENDAR Mass, Confessions, Eucharistic Adoration, and tours are listed on page 4. Holy Family of Nazareth, may the Synod of Bishops make us once more mindful of the sacredness and inviolability of the family, and its beauty in God s plan. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, graciously hear our prayer.

You further ennobled that life when Your Son became one with us in His incarnation. Help us to realize the sacredness of human life and to respect it from the moment of conception until the last moment at death. Give us courage to speak with truth and love and with conviction in defence of life. Help us to extend the gentle hand of mercy and forgiveness to those who do not reverence Your gift of life. To all, grant pardon for the times we have failed to be grateful for Your precious gift of life or to respect it in others. We ask this in Jesus Name. Amen. 7 Page 7 VOICES FROM THE ARCHIVES Do nothing... until authorized by me. On June 22, 1921, Whitney Warren wrote to Mrs. Slade with a list of additions to the Altar that included, a crucifix with crystal rays, a marble tabernacle and a bronze tabernacle door with a steel safe. He suggested, the Owner to supply ivory corpus, and added in a P. S. I am personally of the opinion that the crucifix should be left out of present contract, for I believe it possible for you to find one in your travels that will be something unique and up to the mark instead of an article of commerce. The altar and the crucifix were the subject of several letters between Whitney Warren and Mrs. Slade. In September, 1922, Warren wrote, We are sending [the] enclosed tracing of the... proposed tabernacle of the altar... the idea [is] to have this tabernacle of simple design inasmuch as the Crucifix, of which the tabernacle is the base, will probably be of great brilliancy.... The material of the tabernacle is the Green Alps marble.... The reason for choosing this Green Alps marble is that it is... the same material as the top of the altar. Three days later, Warren received a telegram from Mrs. Slade: Please... send marble samples of Altar and top of Altar and Tabernacle as I have never seen samples for Tabernacle, and it does not sound perfect to me. Please ask them to do nothing with the Tabernacle until authorized by me as perhaps top of altar is not what I understood. But it was too late. Warren wrote, The altar as now built has a green base... to match the green floor on which it sets. Though the green marble had already been set, Mrs. Slade insisted that the altar and the tabernacle should be made of Italian Istrian marble, to match the steps. She was informed that if the change was made, the green stone [would] remain the property of Mrs. Slade and the green marble altar top would have to be sold to some other church. In December, she wrote, I understand... that the green marble for the St. Paul Altar is my property. Therefore, I wish you to send said marble to: Mother Seraphine... College of St. Catherine, St. Paul, Minn. Note: The present altar and tabernacle and the steps leading to the altar are made of pale Italian Istrian marble the final choice of Charlotte Hill Slade, who donated the altar and baldachino in memory of her earthly father, James Jerome Hill and her spiritual father, Archbishop John Ireland. ACSP. REMEMBRANCE, THANKSGIVING, CELEBRATION Centennial Note: 25 Objects. On October 14, 1958, in a five-hour rite, Archbishop William O. Brady consecrated the Cathedral of Saint Paul. Twelve gilded bronze crosses and their candleholders set into the walls of the Cathedral remain from the ceremony. They represent the Twelve Apostles and remind us of the day of consecration fifty-seven years ago. One of the 25 Objects that tells the history of the Cathedral is a candle from that day of Consecration. It is exhibited in the Cathedral museum. Centennial Note: Save the Date: Tuesday, December 1. Spend an elegant evening at the James J. Hill House for the closing event of the Centennial year to honor the Women Who Helped to Build the Cathedral of Saint Paul. Social hour with music begins at 6 :00 p.m. followed by dinner and program at 7:00 p.m. Details will follow. RITES BAPTISM We welcome those who have been newly baptized. Please pray for them as they continue to grow in Christ. Ava Mary Gutierrez Levi William Leier MARRIAGE Please join us in praying for all couples preparing for the sacrament of Matrimony. SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION BAPTISM The sacrament of Baptism is celebrated for our parishioners on Sundays after the Noon Mass. Parents must attend a preparation class. To inquire, call Marybeth Gaetano at MATRIMONY To be married at the Cathedral of Saint Paul, one or both persons of the engaged couple must be an active, registered Cathedral parishioner for six months prior to requesting a wedding date. Call Zachary Morgan at for information about wedding policies. MASS INTENTIONS Scripture and Tradition witness to the value of praying for those who have gone before us in faith. Both Catholic tradition and Church Law clearly acknowledge that it is a laudable practice for the faithful to make offerings in the form of Mass intentions. It has deliberately chosen the more precise term offering to clearly show that any offering given for the celebration of a Mass is to be freely given. Each Mass offered here at the Cathedral is assigned an intention, most often for those who have died, though intentions are not limited to the deceased. It is especially recommended to remember deceased loved ones on the anniversary day of their death or their birthday. Generally speaking, Mass intentions ought to be for a single person. Common exceptions include a Mass offering for a couple s 25th wedding anniversary, for example. You are encouraged to call the Welcome Center at in order to arrange intentions. For the purposes of the bulletin, we typically publish intentions including both the first and last name of the individual for whom the Mass is being offered.
