THE LITURGY OF THE WORD 843 B FIRST READING Acts 4:32-35 HOMILY PROFESSION OF FAITH I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, All bow while saying: and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. At the same time, in all honesty, religion generally gets a bad rap in society today. While walking through the Cathedral and discussing the final phases of the marble restoration, a curious visitor motioned me away from my group, proceeding to ask me some pointed questions about faith and life. He did so in a very respectful way, while noting that nowhere in the Bible was the word religion mentioned. It was strictly man-made terminology. It s about God, not about religion, he stated emphatically. Being in the middle of a meeting at the time, I could not spend much time with him, but I invited him to return. To be clear, his assertion was incorrect. We read in the Letter to James: Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world. (1:27) And it is mentioned a handful of other times, but the gentleman s point, I believe, was that religion is man made, and not of the essence of the faith. In more and more people s minds, God has been separated from organized religion, even though Jesus Christ, (God incarnate), established the Church. In truth, the root meaning of the word religion has been a matter of dispute for centuries it is not clear-cut at all. The Roman orator Cicero thought it derived from relegere (lit. to re-read, to treat carefully); Lactantius, Christian author and advisor to Emperor Constantine, posited that the word comes from religare meaning to bind, while others (such as St. Augustine), thought it originated from religere, as in to recover. In his monumental City of God, Augustine wrote: having lost God through neglect [negligentes], we recover Him [religentes] and are drawn to Him. (Book X, 3) But then later in his life, he abandoned that theory and agreed with Lactantius theory of a century earlier. Whatever its precise origin, (I am partial to the idea of binding ourselves to God), we mustn t fall prey to the notion that our spiritual activities are merely man-made, even if liturgy ( the work of the people ) of necessity making use of human language, symbols, music, all in our efforts to give our best to God, in order to worship Him. Obviously, any Church building is man-made, a human attempt to give glory to God, making use of human artistry, technical ingenuity, and good old-fashioned labor. Christ himself instituted the Eucharist, even if human beings compose the texts of the Mass. We ought never feel compelled to apologize for the man-made elements of our religion, because God chose to use us as fully human instruments. Yes, we rightfully beg forgiveness for our human failings, including those of us in the Church. But our Catholic faith is an incarnational faith it is tangible and we are not mere observers, but active participants in our faith. Easter is a time for us to rejoice in our faith and set aside the manifold problems of society, because at the core, we must be people of hope. Could we not see today s attitudes and religious practice as an opportunity to witness in joy to our faith all throughout these fifty days of Easter? Our Easter joy cannot mask the many problems, either in the world or in our lives; however, Easter most certainly contextualizes them. If we do not manifest and reflect joy, we ll never be viable witnesses to the Kingdom. We honor in a special way today, the many sacrifices of generations of Catholics who built this edifice to glorify God. One century ago

5 Page 5 this weekend, Archbishop Ireland encircled the Church, blessing the exterior, and then passed through the main entrance and sprinkled the interior with Holy Water and said the customary prayers after the recitation of the Litany of Saints, led by the Choir. He was surrounded by fifty acolytes, 150 seminarians, 20 priests, and 11 bishops! It was truly a day of rejoicing. So too today. Last week, Archbishop Nienstedt (who also joins us for the 10:00 Mass today) baptized seven and confirmed 18 additional individuals! Our St. Vincent campus baptized six, while also observing the 20 th anniversary of the Hmong Catholic ministry at that location. Congratulations to all during these most joyous times in our lives of faith. Last week, Gertrude Weaver of Arkansas (born July 4, 1898) held the title of world s oldest living person following the death of a woman in Japan. She said that the secret to her longevity was being kind to everyone and eating her own cooking! She died just a week later, and now the torch is passed to a woman from the Detroit area. Only four people in the world remain who were born in the 1800 s. Minneapolis was ranked the nation s healthiest city, based on stats that include its park system, its low percentage (14%) of smokers, high doctor-patient ratio and exercise rates. I dug around a bit the smoking stats were for the metro area, including Saint Paul; Minneapolis parks cover 16.7% vs % of city land for St. Paul and the physician ratio is equally negligible between the two. The exercise stat covered all of Hennepin County, not the city limits. Where in Minneapolis can you traverse 186 steps to access a hospital, as you can across the street from here? I may just lodge a formal protest with livability.com. Anyone care to join me? Five Salesian missionary priests are ministering in Yemen and plan on staying, despite the country s civil war, led by the Houti Shiites. They are the only Catholic priests in the gulf nation, as well as some missionary nuns. They deserve our admiration and prayers. May God protect all missionaries from harm. Join us after the 10:00 a.m. Mass for our Centennial Brunch, commemorating the 100 th anniversary of the simple blessing of the Church carried out by Archbishop Ireland. Food and entertainment follow Mass in Hayden Hall. Tickets may be purchased downstairs and the raffle drawing will be at Noon. Total amount of money expended on the Cathedral by its simple dedication day on April 11, 1915 $1,591,102. Total amount that Twins free agent pitcher Ervin Santana will forfeit during his 80 game suspension for testing positive for banned substances $6,750,000. Can t make it up. Sincerely in Christ, Fr. John L. Ubel, Rector DIVINE MERCY HOLY HOUR This afternoon, we will offer a special Holy Hour at 2:00 p.m. including the sung Divine Mercy Chaplet, a beautiful and meditative prayer. 7 Page 7 VOICES FROM THE ARCHIVES Dedication Day, April 11, Msgr. Lawrence Ryan remembered, The blessing of the Cathedral took place at 10am Sunday, April 11. Moving picture machines filmed the Archbishop as the procession moved around the outside of the edifice. Unfortunately, the films taken by the moving picture machines, have been lost, but the local press for Dedication Day was filled with news of the New Cathedral. The St. Paul Sunday Pioneer Press and Dispatch published a ten-page insert: The New Cathedral and the Catholic Church in St Paul. A glance at the headlines alone in that insert provides a complete history of the day and its impact on the Catholic Church in Saint Paul. The headline on page two announced, St. Paul s New Cathedral to Be Dedicated Today Free From Debt: Archbishop Ireland s dream had been realized. Other headlines on the page drew readers to articles that detailed every aspect of Cathedral history. CATHEDRAL IS COMPLETE; 8 YEAR WORK, THOUSANDS WILL ATTEND DEDICATION EXERCISES Beautiful Structure Is Triumph of Modern Ecclesiastical Architecture Prelate Sees His Ambition Realized The St. Paul Daily News estimated the attendance at 4000, including two archbishops, eleven bishops, more than 200 priests, 150 seminarians, parishioners, Catholics from parishes in and outside the city, public figures and numerous people from other faiths. The order of the services listed the clergy and the Musical Program. -- Ecce Sacerdos Magnus, the Mass in Plain Chant, Panis Angelicus, Holy God, We Praise Thy Name, and the recessional Haec Dies, by Hamere II. Bishop James McGolrick of Duluth celebrated the Mass; Bishop Thomas O Gorman delivered the sermon and read congratulatory letters from Pope Benedict XV, Cardinal Pietro Gasparri, Vatican Secretary of State, and Cardinal Diomede Falconio, former Papal Delegate to the United States. Bishop McGolrick s words summarized the Day of Dedication: This noble edifice... has been drafted this morning into the service of religion by the Archbishop... With prayer and sacred song and blessing and holy water... he has redeemed it from all profane uses, has fitted it for the reception of the King of Glory, Christ Jesus, Who now takes possession and will dwell herein really and truly present.
