3 PROFESSION OF FAITH Stand I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, All bow while saying: and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. But even the scholarly architectural historian seemed unaware of why the towns of Benson, MN (pop. 3,145), and Murdock, MN (pop. 266, 12 miles to the southeast) would be home to Masqueray gems. The answer, of course, was intimately linked to the westward expansion of the Catholic population that followed the railroad tracks, championed by Bishop John Ireland. The young coadjutor had managed to be given rights to about 75,000 acres in Swift County, about 120 miles west and a little north of Saint Paul. The towns are all accessible via US Highway 12, what many old-timers recall as the highway before Interstate 94 was built. We in the Archdiocese must keep in mind that prior to 1957, our Archdiocese extended to the South Dakota border. Murdock, DeGraff, Benson, Clontarf all these towns were founded largely (though not exclusively) by Irish immigrants who were given parcels of land upon which they would build a homestead, following the American dream for a better life. Subject to the provisions of the Homestead Act of 1862, land was practically free, save for the $14 registration fee. Ireland entered into the arrangement because he was the agent for the sale of the railroad s property in Swift County. In return, Ireland received generous lots upon which Catholic churches and schools would be built. As leader of the Irish Emigration Society, Bishop John Ireland took full advantage of the arrangement to encourage Catholic colonization west of the city of Saint Paul. One town even took to itself the name Graceville, in honor of the former bishop. As the town s website acknowledges, The Irish Emigration Society was later known as the Catholic Land Stock Company with a nonprofit feature to help finance worthy applicants who did not have means to purchase farms for themselves. These initiatives were significant, if not with respect to sheer numbers of immigrants, as for the idea behind them. Bishop Ireland wanted to provide favorable conditions in which the church and society could flourish, a partnership of life and land, with the Catholic faith providing the anchor holding the two together. French, German and Irish immigrants often languished in the big cities, relegated to too many day laborer jobs. Ireland wanted more for them and saw great promise in the western Minnesota plains. He saw this as honest labor, fitting for God-fearing and virtuous men and women who would thrive on their own, rather than under the thumbs of big city industrialists paying scant wages. For his part, so too did James J. Hill, and the two forged a bond as Hill built his railroad empire, while Masqueray was commissioned to design idyllic churches amidst the corn and wheat fields of western Minnesota. It is an episode of Ireland s life that, while not his most successful endeavor, demonstrated just how much out of the box he thought. Another example concerned Ireland s desire to see Catholic schools thrive. Wherever possible, the American bishops wanted a parish to establish a school. But just three weeks before the start of the 1891 school year, when faced with the impending closure of Immaculate Conception School in Faribault, Ireland really thought outside the box. He proposed (entirely behind the scenes of course) an arrangement that would allow the school to be turned over to the state, with the provision that all the teachers kept their jobs and that Catholic doctrine would be taught after school. Why would the state even consider it? Well, imagine pupils suddenly

5 showing up at the public school en masse what would the city do? It was an unorthodox approach, one that would need the support of his fellow bishops, and the approval of Rome, so far reaching were its effects. Today s bulletin cover shows Ireland with some influential church leaders, including Archbishop Satolli, first Apostolic Delegate to the U.S., whose 1892 visit included serious discussions on this topic. His proposal received a classic Roman response tolerari potest it is able to be tolerated. In other words, the horse was out of the barn and it was too late to stop it. But neither did he receive permission to expand the program and it died a natural death. Hardly a ringing endorsement, but neither was it a stiff rebuff. It did not matter, because a similar plan was vetoed in Stillwater, MN by the local school board, including some anti- Catholic fears mixed in with some legitimate Church-state issues. To the Stillwater pastor, Ireland wrote: Adhere to your plan to have no prayers in school hours, and take down all religious pictures. Pictures are in no manner necessary, and let us do without them Get some maps too for the rooms let it not seem to be a rat-trap. The issue of how Catholic schools relate to the public educational system is alive and well (see below). Archbishop Ireland s activities extended far beyond the building this great Cathedral. His penchant for promoting teetotalism was admirable given the prevalent problems with alcohol. His zeal in establishing a seminary to form a native clergy showed great foresight. His disdain for national parishes was motivated by his ability to foresee that ethnic ghettos served no useful purpose; this was the great melting pot. Needless to say, the German speakers were not too thrilled with him! Ireland left his mark all across this Archdiocese. On May 4, 1888, our pioneer diocese was elevated to the rank of Archdiocese of St. Paul (that s right no and Minneapolis yet!), owing in no small part to the influence Ireland wielded and the growth that he facilitated. (Next week: Archbishop Austin Dowling) Kudos to Joe Soucheray for calling out the Saint Paul Public Schools on charging school patrol kids from non-public schools to attend the decades old parade and picnic. As noted previously in these pages, Sr. Carmela Hanggi, (Cathedral Grade School) started the entire School Patrol program on Feb. 21, 1921 practically outside these front doors. It s not about religion it is about safety, for heaven s sake! I fondly recall marching proudly behind the Nativity banner in Our world wasn t divided up between public and private we were all just safety patrols. While I am most grateful for all who joined our Men s Association with our Spring Clean-Up, we have much work yet to do in preparation for the installation of our new Archbishop On May 13. We will be doing some touch-up work on our marble floors the week of May 9, and there may be one more opportunity to help clean before May 13. Stay tuned! Many hands make light work. Several young people from the Cathedral will be confirmed on Monday evening. Congratulations! They face tremendous challenges in our world today; may they know of our continued and prayerful support. The names of this year s confirmandi are listed in today s bulletin. Math was never my best subject, but I believe that this is my 200 th column for the Cathedral bulletin. Hopefully my bully pulpit is not often used to admonish, but rather to share some insights on living a Catholic life in today s society. Sincerely in Christ, Fr. John L. Ubel, Rector CATHEDRAL CALENDAR Page 5 Sunday, April 24 - Fifth Sunday of Easter 11:15 a.m. Rosary for Life - Cana Chapel 6:00 p.m. Rosary for Life - Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Monday, April 25 Tuesday, April 26 Wednesday, April 27 9:30 a.m. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd - Level 1 - Assembly Room 4:00 p.m. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd - Levels 1&2 - Assembly Room 4:00 p.m. Ss. 7 Page 7 VOICES FROM THE ARCHIVES Mark... the Lion in the Desert In May, 1959, artist John Angel wrote to Msgr. George Ryan,... you might remember that I showed you the small sketch for Saint Mark when you visited my studio last summer. I made him holding a book in his hand, and... you said it would be quite proper for him to do so. With your approval, I have gone ahead and made my working model. The sketch was just the first step in a process that included a small clay model, a structured armature of wood and steel, and the 11 6 model created on that structure. Angel intended to follow the same process he had used for the statues of Saints John and Matthew: both were created in Connecticut by John Angel and carved in New York by Egisto Bertozzi. But in 1960, Angel received a surprising note from Italian sculpture Ernesto Piccirilli, [He] gave me an estimate for the carving, so I have decided to let him carve Saint Mark... in Italy. I am confident [it] will turn out well. Both Angel and Msgr. Ryan returned again and again to the details of the statue. Mark s book, they agreed, suggests that his is the shortest, most compact of the Gospels. It begins in the desert with John the Baptist, who would have encountered wild beasts. For Mark that beast had always been the lion. By February, 1960, the model was cast, packed and shipped to Piccirilli s studio in Pietrasanta, Italy. But by the time it was completed both Ryan and Angel had died. In February, 1961, the executor of Angel s estate wrote, The St. Mark statue arrived in N. Y. city from Italy about five days ago. In Saint Paul, the Cathedral bulletin for April 2, included a note from Msgr. Ambrose Hayden: The big fellow, Saint Mark, who was blocking traffic near the Selby rear door last Sunday has been put in his place. Stop and look at this recent addition which you have financed, and rejoice in pride as the Cathedral goes a step closer to its completion. ACSP. Note: The feast of Saint Mark is April 25. Angel s original 11 6 models of Saints John and Matthew are stored in the Cathedral museum storeroom. Perhaps the models of Saints Mark and Luke are still standing in Piccirilli s studio in Pietrasanta, Italy.
