2 WELCOME Dear Parishioners I invite you to continue entering into the peace and joy and love of Christ as our Christmas Celebration continues. This season, we also celebrate that Mary is the mother of God and our mother too. That being the case it is important for us to entrust our lives to her that she may more perfectly bring us to her Son and help us to understand his will for our lives. We also then celebrate the Epiphany to remember that Our Lord most perfectly reveals himself to us through his Son and continues to reveal himself to us as we pray and study our faith. So, that being the case, may part of our New Year s resolution be to make an asserted effort this year to study our Catholic faith and pray more. God Bless, Fr. Butler PROCESSIONAL HYMN I N T R O D U C T O R Y RITES FOUND AT THE FIRST NUMBER ON THE HYMN BOARD The Mass begins with the entrance procession, reminiscent of Christ s triumphant entrance into Jerusalem. As the Priest and sacred ministers make their way to the altar through the congregation, we recall that God has not abandoned His people, but comes among us even now through His priest. Meanwhile, we stand and sing a hymn to show our unity and common desire to give joyful praise to God as a community of believers. GREETING The Priest begins the Mass in the Name of the Most Holy Trinity (cf. Matthew 28:19) and greets us, the faithful, with the traditional greeting of St. Paul, the Apostle (cf. 2 Corinthians 13:14). In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. O sing a new song to the Lord, For he has worked wonders. His right hand and his holy arm Have brought salvation. The Lord has made known his salvation, has shown his deliverance to the nations. He has remembered his merciful love And his truth for the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout to the Lord, all the earth; break forth into joyous song, and sing out your praise. Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp, with the harp and the sound of song. Let the rivers clap their hands, and the hills ring out their joy at the presence of the Lord, for he comes, he comes to judge the earth. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. (He prays the prayer proper to the Mass being celebrated) PENITENTIAL ACT We recall our sins and ask God s gratuitous and liberating forgiveness so that we might more worthily worship Him throughout this Mass. Brothers and Sisters, let us acknowledge our sins, and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries. 2 11

3 BREAKING OF THE BREAD John the Baptist identified Jesus as the Lamb of God (John 1:29). We implore Christ who is now sacramentally present on the altar to have mercy on us and on the whole human race. As we sing these ancient words, the Priest breaks the Sacred Host as a sign that the Body of Christ is to be broken and shared amongst the faithful. AGNUS DEI A Community Mass; Richard Proulx R. KYRIE Kyriale Mass XII; arr, Henri Durieux The ancient Greek words mean: Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Lord, have mercy (cf. Matthew 20:31). This prayer prepares us to worship God with hearts that are pure. Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. R. Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed. Cantor/All repeat: GLORIA IN EXCELSIS DEO Roman Missal This ancient hymn from the fourth century jubilantly praises the Triune God who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in the context of the history of our salvation. We sing with hearts full of joy as we call to mind what God has done for us. We join in praising God in chorus with the angels (cf. Luke 2:14). 10 3

SIGN OF PEACE COMMUNION RITE Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your Apostles: Peace I leave you, my peace I give you; look not on our sins, but on the faith of your Church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will. Who live and reign for ever and ever. The peace of the Lord be with you always. At the Savior s command, and formed by Divine teaching, we dare to say: R. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. PREFACE COLLECT Called the Collect because in this prayer, the celebrant collects all the prayers, intentions, desires, needs, joys, and sorrows of the whole People of God. He offers them to God in a manner that is distinctively Roman, namely, the prayer is simple, somber, and brief. Let Us Pray (He prays the prayer proper to the Mass being celebrated) R. Amen SANCTUS A Community Mass, Richard Proulx LITURGY OF THE WORD Sacred Scripture recounts that the choirs of angels unceasingly praise God around His heavenly throne crying out, Holy, Holy, Holy! (cf. Revelation 4:8) During this moment in the Mass we who exist in time join our voices with the angels. As we sing the song of the angels, time and eternity become one. After the collect, we sit to meditate on a series of Biblical readings. Although the words we hear have been fixed through writing, we remember that they are the inspired Word of God. They are truly alive (cf. Hebrews 4:12) and through them God intends to speak something new to us in this moment. The Word of God is not a book or a doctrine. It is a Person, Jesus Christ. Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, All bow at these words: and by the Holy Spirit, was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. GENERAL INTERCESSIONS L I T U R G Y OF T H E E U C H A R I S T PRESENTATION AND PREPARATION OF THE GIFTS R. LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER. We are seated as the altar is prepared and the gifts of bread and wine are brought forward. Because these gifts represent the offering of our lives, we are encouraged to bring to the altar our joys and sorrows, our successes and our struggles. For just as the bread and wine will be transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ, so too will our entire lives be changed. Although we desire to make ourselves into a perfect offering to the Father, we could never accomplish such a sublime task alone. And so, we can only truly offer ourselves worthily in union with the perfect offering of Jesus on the Cross. Incense is used as a sign of our prayers rising before God (Revelation 8:3). The Priest washes his hands symbolizing that he acts in the Person of Jesus Christ. During the following prayers and gestures, his hands are no longer his own, but rather, they are the very hands of Jesus. OFFERTORY HYMN FOUND AT THE THIRD NUMBER ON THE HYMN BOARD At this time, the choir may offer music for God s Glory on behalf of the worshipping community. At the conclusion of the preparation of the Altar and Gifts: Pray, brethren, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father. R. May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church. PRAYER OVER THE OFFERINGS THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER This prayer begins with a dialogue. The Lord be with you...and with your spirit. It concludes with the Great Amen the community s assent, ratification, and affirmation of this prayer. What happens during this prayer is stunning. The mind reels before its mystery. The heart is thrilled. Belief strains. And yet in every generation people keep coming back, again and again, to hold themselves before the unbelievable experience of this prayer, hoping each time to penetrate its mystery more deeply, to participate in it more entirely, to perceive what happens during the prayer and be a part of it. Through this prayer, offered by the priest for the people, Christ becomes present. Simple bread and wine become Jesus Christ. It is the biggest prayer the Church has. She exists to pray it, and she comes into being by praying it. 6 7
