This time of year, I m a little envious of Bari, Italy, home to the mortal remains of St. Nicholas, or as the locals say, San Nicōla, (rhymes with Coca-Cola). What a joy to be so close to the revered saint during such a special time of year. Christians had feared for the relics due to Persian influence, and hatched a plan to retrieve the relics for Bari. Each year on May 9, many thousands in and around the port city located on the Adriatic in southern Italy, gather in Bari to commemorate the translation of the revered saint s relics, rescued from Myra, Greece (or absconded from depending upon one s perspective). An outdoor Mass begins the celebration, followed by a large-scale procession with his statue, as we all know how Italians love processions! For Christians, St. Nicholas embodies all that is so special about Christmas faith, family, helping those in need, exchanging gifts with loved ones, etc. It is a celebration for all in the city, and St. Nicholas truly is the heart of that Puglian city. We denizens on the east bank of the Mississippi River ought to be equally proud of our patron, St. Paul. We remain ever thankful that Fr. Lucien Galtier, pioneer priest from Dubuque sent to minister to the French Canadian fur traders, decided to name the little log chapel by the river bank (later, our first Cathedral) in honor of St. Paul. You see, at the time the settlement was known by the locals as Pig s Eye Landing, a nickname bequeathed by a whiskey trader by the name of Pierre Parrant. Galtier named the chapel in honor of St. Paul, and the name soon became associated with the growing settlement, much to the chagrin of Parrant! The apostle to the Gentiles is a most worthy patron for our fair city, and the hilltop location of this, our Archdiocese s fourth Cathedral, only adds to the sense that he watches over and blesses the capital city. As we gather to celebrate the great Solemnity of Christmas, our sense of gratitude far exceeds our debt to Fr. Galtier, but equally includes all who have gone before us who labored to preserve and spread the Catholic faith in this area. While many guests will visit our church during these days, this feast is all about welcoming our Lord and Savior. How does one remain a person of hope and joy in the midst of all the uncertainty of the world? This is a timely question and thus I humbly suggest that we direct our gaze to the Crèche, wherein we visibly see the reason for our hope. The wonder and awe that the Crèche elicits in people of all ages is our very best evidence for the continued relevance of the Gospel in an ever increasingly secular world. We must choose to focus our gaze upon the Christ Child, because reflected in His countenance may be seen the transformative power of love. Indeed, the Holy Family models for each of us the school of love that is to be sought within the family. While at times, our families feel more like schools of chaos or even schools of discord, we know in our heart of hearts that family is everything. Through thick and thin, our family is a point of reference and support and in this most special time of Christmas, we ought to celebrate with them. To my thinking, providing families with needed support and encouragement is one of the most important aspects of any priest s ministry and was the focus of last October s Synod in Rome. I cannot for the life of me imagine, by word or glance, doing anything to discourage families (and yes even crying babies!) from attending Mass. The stories of yesteryear, with the scowling priest staring down a restless baby are just that out of the

5 past. The sacrifices that our families make are illustrative of their love for the Catholic faith, especially considering the many demands placed upon them. For those who are single or who live in non-traditional families due to death or the dissolution of a marriage, their crosses can seem so much heavier. Christmas is time to lay our burdens, even if temporarily, at the foot of the Crèche. Our Patron St. Paul fearlessly preached the fullness of the Gospel, including offering poignant words of encouragement in trial. Recall that his Letter to the Philippians was written while in prison, and yet he would write: Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice! Your kindness should be known to all. The Lord is near. Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. (Phil. 4:4-6) On these special days, may our anxiety melt away, and be replaced with joy, gratitude and thanksgiving. Our Savior has been born he is in our midst. This year s Christmas decorations are the direct result of your generosity through donations in memory of or in honor of loved ones. I offer thanks Becky Diekmann, Angie DeWitt, Anne Marie Hansen and all who contribute their time, talent and treasure to provide beautiful flowers all throughout the year. The added greens to the Choir gallery draw special attention to the area near the Holy Door. We offer a special word of welcome to all visitors attending Christmas Masses at the Cathedral. In the midst of our own busy preparations for Christmas, we must not overlook the tremendous efforts of our choir members (both children and adults), and our choir directors. I am deeply grateful for their many contributions, as they help us to lift our minds and voices to the Christ child. U CLOTHE THE NAKED SOCK DRIVE AN ACT OF MERCY Antonio Guajardo, a Cathedral parishioner and altar server will be confirmed in February Antonio is an 8th grade student at Saint Agnes School and has chosen as his Act of Mercy to clothe the naked by collecting socks for the homeless in the Saint Paul and Minneapolis shelters. REMEMBRANCE, THANKSGIVING, CELEBRATION Report--Works of Mercy: Centennial Early in 2014, the Centennial Planning Committee selected the Works of Mercy as a yearlong extension of our celebration and a partial fulfillment of the Cathedral s mission:... to minister to those in need... All parish groups and departments were invited to sponsor monthly works of mercy projects. The following parish groups responded: Cathedral Justice Initiatives, the Men s Association, the Cathedral Young Adults, the Befrienders, the Centennial Planning Committee, Tour Guides, Divine Mercy Cenacle, the Mom s Group, Knights of Columbus, the Clergy, the Women s Association. Cathedral parishioners and staff cooperated with these groups donating socks to the Listening House, food to the Franciscan Brothers of Peace food shelf, clothing to the Saint Thomas More Swap Shop, school supplies to Catholic Charities and gifts for young and old on the Giving Tree. Parishioners donated their blood for the Blood Drive, their prayers for the living and dead and they were everywhere in the Cathedral for Project Home, at the Dorothy Day Center, in nursing homes, in schools wherever the work of mercy needed to be done. Shantel Schallenkamp, now a postulant preparing to enter the Carmelite Order, was the principal director of the Centennial Works of Mercy project. Thank you to Shantel, to all parish groups and organization sponsors and to Cathedral parishioners who supported month by month every project in the program. What you did to the least of these... you did for me : this is the reward and the blessing for parishioners and the Cathedral parish.
