THE LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST PREPARATION OF THE ALTAR AND OBLATION HYMN (when announced) ENGELBERG 721 We Know That Christ Is Raised MOTET (10:00 a.m.) A Better Resurrection, Craig Courtney I have no wit, no words, no tears; My heart within me like a stone Is numbed too much for hopes or fears; Look right, look left, I dwell alone; I lift mine eyes, but dimmed with grief No everlasting hills I see; My life is in the falling leaf: O Jesus, quicken me. My life is like a faded leaf, My harvest dwindled to a husk: Truly my life is void and brief And tedious in the barren dusk; My life is like a frozen thing, No bud nor greenness can I see: Yet rise it shall the sap of Spring; O Jesus, rise in me. My life is like a broken bowl, A broken bowl that cannot hold One drop of water for my soul Or cordial in the searching cold; Cast in the fire this perished thing; Melt and remould it for my King O Jesus, drink of me. Christina Rosetti ORATE FRATRES Celebrant: Pray brethren, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father. May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church. One such vignette more than 50 years ago centered upon an Archbishop who had apparently heard one too many stories about an absentee pastor in a country parish. So he took the liberty of making an unscheduled stop. The pastor, predictably, was absent. While there, the Archbishop noticed that the key had been left in the tabernacle, so he quietly took it. When the pastor later found out from the secretary that the bishop had visited only to find him out of the office he was mortified. But to make matters worse, he could not find the tabernacle key. He finally phoned the Archbishop, only to hear the reply: Father, I noticed that you had neglected the proper care of the tabernacle key, and so I placed it inside your Breviary, where I knew you would surely find it. Ouch again! The dual task of assiduously guarding the tabernacle key and maintaining accurate sacramental records is a very serious duty of all pastors, even if on a daily basis we do not think about it. Sacramental record keeping falls largely to parish staff and most Catholics are blissfully ignorant of the time that this takes to do properly. Every time a man or woman gets married, it is necessary to ascertain the date of their baptism so as to check for any notations that may affect their freedom to get married (e.g. a previous bond), or to determine whether the person has been fully initiated through Confirmation, etc. Here, Lizzie Hernandez does a great job in keeping the records up to date. But more importantly, is the theological reality that the day of our Baptism was the most important day of our spiritual lives, bar none. Do you know the date of your Baptism? A friendly phone call to Nativity Church reaffirmed my recollection in thinking mine was on September 15, 1963, three weeks after my birth. There is but one black and white photo, but that does not diminish the importance of the day. Out of curiosity, I dug into the Cathedral sacramental records to locate the very first recorded Baptism. Not only did I find it, but it was a both a challenge and a joy to see the handwriting (in French no less) of none other than 29 year-old newly ordained Fr. Lucien Galtier, sent to the settlement of Pig s Eye by Bishop Loras of Dubuque, under whose jurisdiction these parts fell in those days. He arrived at Ft. Snelling and proceeded to minister to the French fur traders and their families and was the first resident priest in this area. The first name listed in the register was that of Marguerite Marie Pepin, dated May 3, SUNDAY STEWARDSHIP CONTRIBUTIONS FOR DECEMBER 25 & 28, 2014 Christmas (Member Envelopes) $ 45, Christmas (Visitors) $ 14, Christmas Collection (12/25/2014) $ 59, Sunday Envelopes (12/28/2014) $ 18, Member EFT/credit card $ 15, Visitors $ 7, Total Sunday Contributions $ 41, Fiscal Year-to-date (12/28/2014) $ 663, Saint Vincent de Paul Campus $ 2, (Note the signature of Father Galtier in lower right-hand corner.)

5 Page 5 Through the wonders of the internet, it was easy to confirm she died on January 9, 1879 at the age of just 38. Her surname intrigued me. Perhaps you have visited Lake Pepin south the metro area in Lake City, the largest lake on the Mississippi River. I am not aware of any family connection to the name of the lake, but Marguerite will always have a special place in Cathedral history. She was baptized even before the little log cabin Church on the river bluff was constructed, for the log chapel s first Mass was celebrated on November 1, A plaque marks the spot for our first cathedral across from the Crowne Plaza hotel on the other side of Kellogg Blvd., and I refer you to the beautiful Mark Balma fresco on the Dayton side of the Church where you see the tiny chapel depicted. If you take a peek into the Baptistry, you ll see a stained glass window dedicated to Fr. Louis Hennepin, Belgian-born explorer priest, and namesake of our state s most populous county. He was the first Catholic priest to pass through, though he was nearly killed by Indians upon his arrival. His life was spared, due in no small part to his humility and his gifts presented to the chieftain. Unfortunately, his chasuble and all other items needed for Mass were confiscated (except his chalice, whose silver gilt produced a reflection that frightened the native Dakotas.) He gave name to a Minneapolis landmark, Chutes de Saint-Antoine, known to us as St. Anthony Falls. I do not know for certain if, as depicted in the window, Hennepin performed any baptisms of Native American babies during his very brief sojourn in these parts, but his legacy lives on in our state s history. Our Baptism is truly the key moment of our spiritual lives. I encourage you to note its date in your own life and on that day to offer a prayer of thanksgiving to God for the gift of His sanctifying grace, making you a child of God and a member of Christ s Church. As we close the Christmas season today, let us be mindful of just how that day transformed the very depths of our souls. I counted 227 baptisms in the year 1915 alone, as the city was rapidly growing. Think of the thousands who have been baptized here since Marguerite! Let us be grateful for God s manifold grace. In naming 15 new electors to the College of Cardinals, Pope Francis has truly gone to the peripheries of the globe, choosing bishops for the first time ever from Cape Verde (island off the coast of Africa), Myanmar and the pacific island nation of Tonga. Just the pope s second group of new Cardinals, once again no Americans were named, though we still have a large representation in the college. Alumni reunion? I received an unusual text message from a dad informing me that three members of the Saint Agnes School Class of 2014 unexpectedly re-connected over Christmas Break right here in the confessional line! The real value of a Catholic education lies, not in the teaching of the faith, but in helping the students to keep the faith. I encourage parents to attend an Open House to explore Catholic educational options for their kids. Our young adults are hosting a wonderful series of evenings through the Theology on Tap at O Gara s restaurant on Snelling Ave. Speakers include religious sisters, lay men and women discussing immigration, Bl. John Henry Newman, interpersonal relationships, as well as the popular Grill the Priest segment, this time with the college seminary rector, Fr. Michael Becker. Sincerely in Christ, Fr. John L. Ubel, Rector CATHEDRAL CALENDAR Mass, Confessions, Eucharistic Adoration, and tours are listed on page 4. For every adoption referral, Planned Parenthood arranged 174 abortions. American taxpayers contributed $500 million to the organization, a full 41% of its revenues. We must never tire in the fight to protect the sanctity of all human life from the moment of conception.

Have you discerned what your gifts are? Called & Gifted is a workshop designed to help us understand and begin to discern these spiritual gifts, or charisms, in our own lives. The Cathedral is hosting Called & Gifted on January 30-31, and it is free for Cathedral parishioners! Go to cathedralsaintpaul.org/called-gifted for more information and to register. RED BULL CRASHED ICE This year's Crashed Ice Event is making more extensive use of the Cathedral stairs as the course's starting point for the race, largely to highlight our facade with its beautiful Rose Window. Structural Engineers have assured us that the structure will not damage our stairs, also minimizing the chances for people to slip on the stairs. Additionally, we have been given assurances that John Ireland Blvd. will remain open on Sunday mornings, making it easier to access the main Cathedral parking lot. While the month presents some challenges, the benefits outweigh the challenges.

7 Page 7 VOICES FROM THE ARCHIVES I Have Baptized You with Water In 1990, the centerpiece of the Cathedral s 75 th Jubilee celebration was the installation of the mosaic of the Baptism of the Lord by Saint John the Baptist in the baptistery. Earlier in 1989, Msgr. Hayden commissioned Ade Bethune to design the mosaic. Her reputation as a professional artist preceded her first visit to the Cathedral, where she recognized the work of her artistic mentor, Charles Connick, and accepted the commission with enthusiasm. Well-known as a liturgical artist, she was also known for her work with Dorothy Day in the Catholic Worker settlement in New York. Her Catholic faith infused her work with deep religious symbolism. In the mosaic, she focuses on Christ, Who stands in the center shoulderdeep in water. John the Baptist places his right hand over Christ s head, but turns his eyes to the voice of the Father above and the Holy Spirit symbolized by the dove. Seven rays emerging from the orb above Christ s head symbolize the days of creation and the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Saints Andrew and John, the sons of Zebedee, are there, and three angels minister to Christ on His left. Note: Bishop Robert Carlson, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese at that time, blessed the mosaic after Mass on October 14, 1990, the anniversary of the solemn consecration of the Cathedral. He spoke of the symbolism of the work for all who share by water in His saving death and share with Him an Easter life. Baptized we live with God, the Three in One. The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord is January 11. ACSP. REMEMBRANCE, THANKSGIVING, CELEBRATION CENTENNIAL NOTES A Journey through Cathedral History The official opening of Centennial 2015 will take place on January 25 with Mass at 10 a.m. The first of several Centennial exhibits, A Timeline of Cathedral History, will open after Mass; a reception in Hayden Hall follows the opening. The Timeline, a walk through Cathedral history, has been in the planning stage for months under the leadership of Centennial Planning Committee member Carl Simmons. It s an opportunity to follow, photo by photo, the construction of what Ireland always called the New Cathedral of Saint Paul. It begins with Ireland s decision on Holy Thursday, 1904, and takes the viewer year by year from the early construction through the building and embellishment of the exterior of the Cathedral. The Timeline will be open for viewing on the Lower Level of the Cathedral every day when the Cathedral is open. Centennial 2015 Day by Day The Centennial Calendar was distributed on January 1, the Feast of the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God, a fitting way to begin 2015, our Centennial year. Though the Calendar will perform the day-to-day work of a Catholic calendar, it is has been designed to be a convenient history of the Cathedral illustrated by stunning photographs taken by several photographers. Their work is credited on every photograph. The cover of the calendar makes a bold statement with the Centennial logo. Centennial Planning Committee member Michelle Marzitelli directed the contest for a centennial logo early in March, In June the winner, was announced, parishioner Jessica Radecki. Her design chosen from among several submitted has been used and will be used throughout the Centennial year.
