After all, in the northern hemisphere the difference between an early and late Easter is significant. This year Easter fell on April 5. Next year it falls on March 27, followed by April 16 in When Easter fell on March 23, 2008, it was 26 degrees on Easter morning! The earliest Easter can fall is March 22. That last happened in 1761 and 1818! But don t worry Easter will not be as early as in 2008 until 2160 A.D., so we re safe. April 25 is the latest possible date that s a 34-day difference, one that wreaks havoc on many a greenhouse, trying to plan for flowers! So, why this strange difference of Easter dates? The answer begins with the Spring Equinox, an annual event that falls on or around March 21, the day when the sun shines directly on the equator resulting in a nearly equal length of day and night everywhere in the world. But how we calculate the date for Easter each year is much more complicated. (See the Medieval Easter Table below). Christians in the second century argued fiercely over the date of Easter. The churches of Rome, Alexandria and many others (both east and west) celebrated Easter on the Sunday immediately following the first full moon of spring that is, after the Spring Equinox. But the churches of Asia Minor (present day Turkey), observed it on the 14 th day of the first moon of spring, following the tradition (recorded by St. John) that Jesus was crucified as the true Paschal lamb on the very day when Jews celebrated Passover. That is the short version of the story. But notice that in this plan, Easter would not always fall on a Sunday. So a major controversy ensued. As more people traveled, the differences became more pronounced. When Pope Victor wrote a letter (lost to history) requiring the eastern practice to fall in line with Rome, we can infer from sources detailing the reply of Bishop Polycrates of Ephesus that he was, how shall I say, less than enthusiastic about the pope s request. The eminent theologian St. Irenaeus tried to bring the two sides together. While he certainly agreed that Easter should be observed on a Sunday, he also acknowledged that the eastern practice had an historical and scriptural basis, and that it was inopportune to proceed against the eastern Christians with severity. In the following century, the first Ecumenical Council of Nicaea (325 A.D.) took up the topic more definitively, decreeing that all Christians must celebrate Easter on a Sunday. Problem solved, right? Wrong! An additional landmine occurs when we compare the more accurate Gregorian calendar with the older, but less accurate Julian calendar dating to the time of Julius Caesar. Over time, these slight differences in calculating leap years added up to ten full days by the 16 th century. In one fell swoop, the Pope (yes, the Pope!) declared that October 4, 1582 would be followed the next morning by October 15, thereby correcting the discrepancy. Astronomers, then as now, are amazingly accurate and precise people, and they corrected centuries of miniscule errors in calculating time. But by then, since some countries had long since split from Rome, they were not too keen on liturgical dating according to the Catholic calendar, and so continued to use the Julian calendar for the liturgy. Confused yet? Fast forward to Vatican Council II and know that the Catholic Church heartily endorsed the idea of a mutually agreed upon fixed date for Easter, thereby ending the differences among Christians. In an appendix to the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, we read: This holy Council has no difficulty with assigning the feast of Easter to a fixed Sunday within the Gregorian calendar if other interested parties agree, especially sisters and brothers who are separated from communion with the apostolic see. In 1975, the Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarch Dimitrios I wrote a letter to

5 Page 5 Pope Paul VI, and he was quite honest in his assessment: Such a divergence weakens the witness which we Christians ought to give together to the world; it also makes it impossible for us to carry out the intentions of the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea which wished that all Christians be one in the celebration of the great mystery of Christ and of the Church. In his reply to that letter, Cardinal Willebrands, the pope s point man on ecumenism, agreed fully and went a step further, writing: In the name of Pope Paul VI, I would like to propose that from 1977 onwards Easter be always celebrated on the Sunday following the second Saturday of April. I m lousy at math, but Easter would fall between April 9-15, right? What happened? There are many Orthodox churches, self-governing, and they could not arrive at consensus and in 1977 the Catholic Church pulled back, stating that the time was not yet ripe. Further talks occurred in 1997, but in short, the effort has quasi-stalled. Another option is a moving date, but one where all Christians calculate the moving date of Easter in the same way. At the risk of sounding naïve, this is a no brainer. We ought to re-ignite the talks, given our affinity with the Orthodox and our common desire for all Christians to draw closer together in these very challenging times. The Church lost an intellectual and spiritual giant in the person of 78 year-old Cardinal Francis George of Chicago. When accompanying a group of students from Saint Agnes School to Chicago in 2012, we scored a 10-minute meet and greet with him. But after inquiring about their seminar class, he proceeded to engage them in a 40-minute discussion on the problem of evil that they had been reading in St. Augustine all off the top of his head! Requiescat in pace. Speaking of Chicago When Cubs pitcher Jon Lester fielded a sharp grounder last week, the ball got caught in the web of his glove. After initially failing to dislodge it, he did the next best thing. He flipped his entire glove to the first baseman (who ditched his own to catch it), beating the runner. He received a well-deserved standing ovation. The parents of Martin Richard, the 8 year-old Boston Marathon victim, oppose the death penalty for the convicted bomber. As long as the defendant is in the spotlight, we have no choice but to live a story told on his terms, not ours, they wrote, citing the likelihood of years of appeals. True enough, but I also encourage Catholics to study the primary reasons behind the Church s opposition to the death penalty. Sincerely in Christ, Fr. John L. Ubel, Rector An Easter table from the 11th century, with tinted drawing depicting St. Pachomius ( 346 A.D.) receiving the tables from an angel. This pair of arches is one of a series containing texts related to the calculation of the date of Easter, which were supposed to have been given to the saintly monk by an angel. 7 Page 7 VOICES FROM THE ARCHIVES The subject of conversation.... After the Dedication on April 11. The Cathedral was now the subject of conversation everywhere. Comments and criticism were varied indeed.... This was, of course, the largest church in the city. People were accustomed to small churches and hence much of the criticism about acoustics and about difficulty to pray and hear Mass devoutly in such a large place was unfair. Soon all of this disappeared. The great majority had, of course, never seen the grand Cathedrals of the old world and the characteristic impressiveness of Cathedral lines, "majestic and heavenly," had not dawned upon them. Four or five years passed before this idea took hold of the popular imagination. The grounds around the Cathedral were still littered with evidences of the long building period. Some refuse took fire one day about the middle of May, and it was necessary to call the fire department. The first was quite close to the building, the corner on Selby toward the tunnels. The firemen foolishly turned the hose on the first and the heated granite cracked from contact with the cold water. It was necessary to chisel out two large blocks of granite and replace them This was a long tedious job. The grading of the grounds was finished in June, Plans started immediately to finish some of the Chapels. The first chapel to be planned was that of St. Peter. Mrs. James Cahill of Lake City donated money for this purpose in memory of her deceased husband. The contract for the marble was let late in the year Msgr. Lawrence Ryan, Historical Sketch Note: The local press noted: "This Northwest will never know a moment of greater magnificence, of greater significance.
