3 HOMILY R.C.I.A.: RITES OF ACCEPTANCE AND WELCOME (10:00 a.m.) Celebrant: ready to help them follow Christ? We are. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Ps 119:105 PROFESSION OF FAITH Nicene Creed believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and I earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, All bow while saying: and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Ford MEMORIAL ACCLAMATION Roman Missal MOTET (10:00 a. m.) Te Deum Charles Villiers Stanford We praise thee, O God: we acknowledge thee to be the Lord. All the earth doth worship thee: the Father everlasting. To thee all Angels cry aloud: the Heavens, and all the Powers therein. To thee Cherubim and Seraphim: continually do cry, Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Sabaoth; Heaven and earth are full of the Majesty of thy glory. The glorious company of the Apostles praise thee. The goodly fellowship of the Prophets praise thee. The noble army of Martyrs praise thee. The holy Church throughout all the world: doth acknowledge thee; The Father of an infinite Majesty; Thine honourable, true, and only Son; Also the Holy Ghost, the Comforter. Thou art the King of Glory, O Christ. Thou art the everlasting Son of the Father. When thou tookest upon thee to deliver man, thou didst not abhor the Virgin's womb. When thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death, Thou didst open the Kingdom of Heaven to all believers. Thou sittest at the right hand of God, in the glory of the Father. We believe that thou shalt come to be our Judge. We therefore pray thee, help thy servants, whom Thou hast redeemed with Thy precious blood. Make them to be numbered with thy Saints in glory everlasting. O Lord, save Thy people and bless Thine heritage. Govern them, and lift them up forever. Day by day, we magnify Thee; And we worship Thy Name, ever world without end. Vouchsafe, O Lord, to keep us this day without sin. O Lord, have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us. O Lord, let Thy mercy lighten upon us, as our trust is in Thee. O Lord, in Thee have I trusted: let me never be confounded. attr. SS. When a dear friend remarked out of the blue You realize, don t you, that you have more years behind you than you have ahead of you on this earth? Yes, I can do the math, and have known that for some time! I then recalled one of the first pieces that I learned on my saxophone at age 10 was Nearer my God to Thee. I d play it accompanied by my great aunt on the piano! Yes, no matter what, we will all face the judgment seat of Christ, just as Saint Paul recounts to the Corinthians, For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive good or evil, according to what he has done in the body. Whether or not that kernel from Scripture is good news is entirely up to us. Do you ever stop to think about this reality? Do you consider judgment day? As the Year of Mercy draws to a close today, it may seem counterintuitive to discuss judgment. But in truth, judgment is not at all in conflict with the Year of Mercy theme, Merciful as the Father, because God s mercy figures prominently in our judgment. So too does His Justice. We d be delusional to think that our actions in this life ought to be free from scrutiny. I have watched the pundits break down the recent election in excruciating detail, highlighting each candidate s campaign miscalculations and merits. I wonder what would happen if we broke down our lives the same way? The Church in her wisdom calls for balance. A healthy fear of the Lord does not allow for living life constantly doubting our salvation any more than we ought to think we have it all locked up. As Saint Paul urges us in Philippians 2:12, work out your salvation with fear and trembling. This is accompanied with a hopeful assurance but not with a false sense that it s a done deal either. Our faith reminds us, Death puts an end to human life as the time open to either accepting or rejecting the divine grace manifested in Christ (CCC # 1021). The Particular Judgment occurs at the moment of our death, when all will be laid bare. At that moment, our souls will come before the Lord and we will either be counted among the saved or we will not. Period. If we are counted among the saved, we will enter into the fullness of God s life and love in heaven, either immediately or after a period of purification in Purgatory. It is a matter of perspective. One could legitimately say that God sees everything that we do He sees all. One could also say, God loves us so much that He cannot take his eyes off of us. Both are equally true, just from different perspectives. Indeed, we will see our life as is was, both each act of sin and its consequences as well as every act of goodness and virtue that we exhibited while on earth. We will see ourselves as God sees us. The Universal Judgment, on the other hand, refers to the ultimate victory over sin and death manifested at the end of time. Before the second coming of Christ, the Church must undergo a final trial that, according to Scripture, will shake the faith of many believers (see CCC # 675, Luke 18:8, and Matt. 24:12). The secrets of our hearts will be revealed. When he comes at the end of time to judge the living and the dead, the glorious Christ will reveal the secret disposition of hearts and will render to each man according to his works, and according to his acceptance or refusal of grace (CCC # 682). For the person of faith, this ought not to instill panic, but neither ought we to believe that we are freed from providing an account of our lives. Saint John of the Cross, the 16 th century Spanish Carmelite friar, beautifully wrote: When evening comes, you will be examined in love. Learn to love as God desires to be loved and abandon your own

5 ways of acting (Sayings of Light and Love, #60). These pithy phrases were often written on scraps of paper and given to people as a starting point for their own prayerful reflection. Just a nibble of wisdom from a spiritual giant can set us off on a most profitable path. We will be judged on love. How do I picture the particular judgment? It is a question upon which I have reflected for some time, especially during this month of November. What would be my epitaph? How would I like to be remembered? Frankly, it is cross between I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith, (2 Tim. 4:7) and Jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom, (Luke 23:42 the cry of the good thief Dismas). Somewhere in that delicate balance, I pray that God will receive my soul mercifully and tenderly. Pie Jesu Domine, Dona eis requiem. Tender Lord Jesus, grant them rest. (Next week: Heaven) Mexican lawmakers have rejected a move by President Enrique Nieto to legalizing same-sex marriage all across the country. It is legal in several jurisdictions already. The Mexican Bishops Conference endorsed the dozens of pro-family marches that have occurred, which were laity led. The Apostolic Nuncio to Mexico chimed in: When we are speaking of the constitution, it has to become something that all Mexicans, or at least a great majority of Mexicans, can share. The U.S. Catholic Bishops have published an English translation of the Vatican s Compendium on the Eucharist, a handy summary of Catholic teaching, piety and practice. It incudes prayers, explanations of the Eucharistic Prayers and other useful aids for a correct understanding, celebration and adoration of the Sacrament of the Altar. The 414-page book is available from the USCCB online at store.usccb.org Deacon Russ Shupe is in his twelfth year of faithful service to the Cathedral. Please stop by Hayden Hall after the Sunday 10:00 a.m. Mass to greet him. I am especially grateful for his thoughtful homilies, his commitment to the poor, and his gentle spirit, all borne from his deep and abiding faith. I have been so honored to have worked alongside him these past four and a half years. We published approximately 12,000 pamphlets on the Holy Year Indulgence. Available just outside the Holy Door, our staff would routinely replace them and we would order more. Thousands upon thousands have come through these doors, and I am convinced that the Holy Year has been a great success. I believe it has been the most effective and impactful initiative of Pope Francis to date. Did you happen to see the Supermoon very early last Monday morning? At 5:22 a.m. the moon was larger and 30 percent brighter than the smallest full moon, though honestly it did not look significantly different to me. The last time the moon was this close was in 1948, when Truman stunned Dewey and gasoline was 16 cents a gallon. If you missed it, don t worry. It ll happen again in 2034! Sincerely in Christ, Fr. To all the parishioners and staff of the Cathedral, it has been my great honor and privilege to serve as your deacon for 11 years. In particular, I am especially grateful to Fr. John Ubel and Deacon Phil Stewart for their friendship and support over these past several years. So it is that I announce to you that Archbishop Hebda has granted my application for a transfer to St. Michael Church in Farmington effective December 1st. The reason for this change is I believe that a move to a parish assignment closer to my home in Prior Lake, MN is in the best interests of my family. As I leave, I will keep you and the Cathedral parish in my prayers and I ask for your prayers as well. Thank you and may our Lord Jesus bless you. TODAY AT THE CATHEDRAL THE GIVING TREE, SAINT PETER S SQUARE The Cathedral has a rich tradition of giving at Christmas time. 7 Page 7 VOICES FROM THE ARCHIVES Father Augustin Ravoux - II The Catholic parish in Saint Paul continued to grow. Like Father Galtier before him, Father Ravoux divided his time between Saint Peter and Saint Paul. Late in 1848, Ravoux wrote to Bishop Loras: When I live at St. Paul, I have 1000 Catholics under my jurisdiction, of whom the most distant are 25 or 30 miles from the chapel. But the enlarged chapel was still inadequate. Many who came from nearby settlements were forced to hear Mass from outside the chapel, looking in through the door and windows. The town of Saint Paul continued to grow: the location of the log chapel in Saint Paul set the town as the head of navigation on the Mississippi. Several stores were opened in the town; the American Fur Trading Company moved from Saint Peter to Saint Paul; a steamboat company ran regular packets between Saint Paul and Stillwater and beyond. And in the spring of 1846, Saint Paul graduated from a hamlet to a town, when Henry Jackson was appointed postmaster. The publication of the first issue of the Minnesota Pioneer in 1849 was taken as a symbol of the emergence of Saint Paul as a municipality. Added to this was the fact that in 1848, word somehow leaked out that the organization of a Minnesota Territory was in the wind and this, too, sent many settlers, speculators and others scurrying towards St. Paul. This increase in population and the demand for property in the town prompted the first survey of lots in Saint Paul. In 1848, three citizens-- Henry Sibley, August Larpenteur and Louis Robert were delegated to register and then buy up these lots for the settlers at $1.25 an acre. It was at this time that Father Ravoux acquired legal ownership of the lot on which the Chapel of Saint Paul was located. According to some historians, the year 1848 marks the turning point in the early history of Saint Paul. Before that date, Saint Paul was a disorganized society just emerging from a wilderness. After 1848, civilization, law, and order came to the area. Men of education, wealth and influence, many of them Yankees or New England-born Americans, settled in St Paul, and real progress could be seen toward establishing a Territorial Government in Minnesota. Excerpts from The Chapel of St. Paul... by Father Richard Moudry ACSP Thoughts on the Cathedral Parish.... I like to cross the river on the High Bridge and look back to the Saint Paul skyline the Cathedral, the House of God, on the left; the Capitol, the House of Government, on the right. In between, the downtown buildings reach for the sky. But it s the Cathedral that impresses. Seated on the highest hill in the City of Saint Paul, it dominates the skyline. It s then that I remember that a city seated on a hill cannot be hidden. And I think, This is my parish: the good people who worship here and the good things that happen here make this building a living monument, more than the sum of its distinguished history, art and architecture. It is very simply a House of God, and like so many churches built by the faith and sacrifices of the immigrants who worshiped here, it stands for these virtues. I think this is why people like to stop and look at the Cathedral it reminds them of the best in themselves. ACSP. ON THE COVER The stained glass windows in the sacristy, the last windows to be placed in the Cathedral, were designed and executed between 1959 and Conrad Pickél s window of Christ the King on the north wall of the sacristy is the artist s interpretation in brilliant reds and golds.
