I suspect that one reason why people rarely wear aprons anymore is because cooking has changed so radically. Grocery stores, even high-end ones, are filled with practically ready-made meals, and little anymore is made from scratch. I still remember watching dough rise, fresh from the mixer and pouring the blueberry muffin batter into the individually lined tins, or volunteering to sample the cookie dough! Yes, my mother was a full-time homemaker. Certainly I understand the need for efficiency today and do not lament the demise of made from scratch breads and muffins. But I am more concerned about the death of the family meal and its consequences for the family. On Mother s Day weekend, it is appropriate to write about the centrality of the family meal. The Twin Cities area boasts approximately 2000 full-service restaurants and nearly 3000 counter service restaurants. There are more than fifty restaurants within a one-mile radius from the Cathedral! Who needs to learn how to cook anymore? Even when I do eat out, I ll readily admit that I am probably far too tied to my iphone instead of the person or persons across the table. My schedule is such that I often end the day with a post 5:15 p.m. Mass meeting of some sort. Now, we are in confirmation season, so dinner really gets pushed out. The era of the nightly 6:00 p.m. dinner is quickly becoming a thing of the past. Domino s delivers 400 million pizzas a year, after all! It is sad, but it is also the reality. I suspect that many families are the same. But ought we to give up? Must we be relegated to eating on the run instead of sharing a family meal? I hope not. In Italy, the custom of the family meal is quite different. Restaurants do not consider it a virtue to turn a table, the phrase used here to delineate a restaurant s desire to facilitate multiple sittings in the course of an evening. You reserve a table for the evening period. Families eat their main meal around 1:30 p.m. or so. The kids are done with school (can you imagine?), as sports and other activities are not managed through schools, but through other organizations. It is academics straight through and then home for Pranzo (midday meal). More and more restaurants have instituted a No Reservations policy. Why is that? Several possibilities come to mind. First, too many people don t show up rude to be sure, but apparently it happens often enough to be a problem. Secondly, many establishments want people to hang out in the bar area, where after all, they spend more money while waiting. Finally, some people linger, while others eat more quickly and so they can keep em coming, and not have dead space at a table between customers. Is it not painfully obvious when a restaurant wants you to move along quickly? Frankly, the idea of making a reservation and then not showing up is troubling in itself. I have had situations where I could not find a parking spot, and got on the cell phone and cancelled. How hard was that? They appreciated the call, if for no other reason than they could give it to someone else. But it never occurred to me that I was justified in being a no show without an explanation. It is part of our more casual culture and its effects are clear to see. Robin Fox, a Rutgers University anthropologist, commented about the mysterious way that family dinner engraves our souls. A meal is about civilizing children. It's about teaching them to be a member of their culture. (Eating Smart Magazine, 4 June 2006) The stats are clear families that eat together are healthier, happier and better students. Really? As Edgar Bergen s ventriloquist dummy Mortimer Snerd said, Who d have thunk it? I hope no one is surprised by these statistics it is just common sense, but the demise of the family dinner table has its own effects.

5 Page 5 In this week s column I am raising many more questions than readily providing solutions, especially as families in which both parents are working have become the majority. While this complicates matters, it does not make a sit-down meal impossible. On a day in which we honor the many sacrifices of mothers in our lives and in the life of this nation, let us be sure to thank them for their irreplaceable role in society, their tireless dedication to the well being of their children (of all ages!), and above all, the central role they play in passing on the faith to a new generation. Thank you, Moms, for all that you do, but more importantly, for who you are in our lives. While visiting the North American College in Rome, Pope Francis urged the U.S. seminarians to imitate the zeal of Bl. Junipero Serra, founder of the California missions, whom the Pope plans to canonize as part of his U.S. visit on September 23, Pope Francis described Serra as one of the founding fathers of the United States. I hope that California does not follow through on plans to have the statue of the 18 th century Franciscan replaced in the U.S. Capitol for politically correct motives. Italy is being inundated with thousands of refugees, as smugglers cram desperate people aboard sub-standard vessels and surreptitiously leave ports across North Africa for the straits of Sicily. The Mediterranean is becoming a mass grave, as many never reach harbor safely. In addition, think of the economic strain on the tiny island of Lampadusa, off the coast of Sicily. It is a humanitarian crisis. The first of 8,500 glass panels have been installed in the new $1 billion Vikings Stadium, as work progresses. The contract is a major coup for Viracon, the Owatonna based company producing the insulated glass. I would love to know the Windex budget for the stadium! On average, nearly 240 young people are confirmed at each Cathedral ceremony, and we will host 15 during the Easter season alone. To our generous and faithful maintenance, music and sacristan staff, to our volunteer ushers though my words of gratitude fall short, I thank you nonetheless. I truly enjoy visiting with the priests and families all across this Archdiocese at these events, but it makes for busy weeks to be sure. Congratulations to parishioner Sgt. Mark Ficcadenti, honored last month as the Saint Paul Police Department Officer of the Year! 7 Page 7 Hail, Temple of Jehovah! VOICES FROM THE ARCHIVES Archbishop Ireland was pleased with the public attention the New Cathedral received from the press. Soon after the publication of The Cross in the Catholic Bulletin, James C. Nolan* presented a new poem to the Archbishop: God s Church: A Poem Suggested by the Dedication of the New Cathedral of Saint Paul. Ireland was impressed with the 206-line poem, had the work published in a small 12-page booklet and distributed copies to parishioners and visitors. The poem began with Upon this rock, O Peter, I build my church, and moves from the day of Peter s commission to the dedication of the Cathedral in Nolan lists the martyrs, doctors, confessors, the holy men and women whose devout lives built the church. He praises the achievements of the Church in theology, law, medicine, science, art and philosophy and adds, the world may not forget/ explorers, navigators, Columbus, Jorgues, Marquette. Of Christian England, he says, Her greatness sprang from the mustard seed/of the Monks of Jarrow, planted, obedient to Bede. And Nolan mentions Shakespeare too in the long history of the Church. His poetic tour-de-force from Peter to the Cathedral of Saint Paul ends: A city seated on a hill, where none may fail to see; By marks and signs distinguished, God s church indeed must be.... Visitors, guests, tourists and parishioners ask the question, How did they build the Cathedral in those early years of the 20 th Century? Larry Morgan, Senior Engineer with Toltz, King, Duvall, Anderson (TKDA) will answer that question, Tuesday evening. Toltz Engineering, forerunner of TKDA, was one of the first contractors to work on the construction of the fourth Cathedral. Morgan s presentation will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Hayden Hall. A reception, sponsored by the Cathedral Heritage Foundation, will follow. Centennial Works of Mercy Project/May. Cathedral tour guides are on the road this month taking the history of the Cathedral to Saint Paul nursing home in a presentation, The Cathedral of Saint Paul: Celebrating 100 Years in the City of St. Paul. Although the tour guide program at the Cathedral has been in existence since the late 1970s, it was, in the words of Msgr. Ambrose Hayden, pretty informal, haphazard and catch-as-catchcan. It was later formalized and now functions as an important outreach activity for the Cathedral. The Cathedral Food Shelf has been stocked and restocked this month, and two large deliveries of food donations were made to the Franciscan Brothers of Peace Emergency Food Shelf. All this came about through generous donations from Cathedral parishioners, the leadership of Centennial Committee volunteer Shantel Schallenkamp, and help from parishioner Erin Quinn.
