1 THE SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT FEBRUARY 21, 2016 Pope Francis Prayer for the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: If you knew the gift of God! You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, Its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with His anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen. The fatigue of travel and the excitement from Tuesday s activities coalesced, enabling me to sleep in until nearly 6:00 a.m.! I made my way down to the refectory for a cup of coffee at 6:45, but it was still brewing. I said my morning prayers and patiently waited! It was well worth it, and I took the time to finish last week s column before e- mailing it back home. Later in the morning I visited with David Kirsh, a Cathedral parishioner and SJV college seminarian, spending the semester in Rome through UST s Catholic Studies program. What a wonderful experience for him, and believe me, David is a real gift to the parish and I pray that if it is God s will, he perseveres in his vocation, as he would make a wonderful priest! Ever the amateur historian, I was briefly able to sneak away into Rome s famous Biblioteca Angelica to examine first hand an ancient copy of the Commentary on the Psalms by Cassiodorus, a 6 th century layman turned quasi-monk in his later years. He was the first to write of seven penitential psalms, a topic about which I have previously written and spoken here. He hailed from southern Italy (Calabria) and I had made arrangements to visit his hometown on Thursday, catching an evening flight after the Ash Wednesday Mass and staying at the local seminary. I thought it prudent to make a quick round trip to the airport to store my luggage and take care of early check-in. Being unsure of exactly how long the evening Mass would take, I knew I was cutting it close. More on that side trip another time it was fantastic! Desiring to keep the rest of Ash Wednesday in a spirit of penance and preparation, I neither shopped nor did any sight-seeing. Instead I spent some quiet time in prayer at the Augustinianum, a Pontifical University right next St. Peter s Square, specializing in Patristic studies. And where, I might add, I took the toughest oral exam I have ever had in my life ten years ago it still stings! It was peaceful and prayerful, after which at 2:30 I made my way to St. Peter s, thirty minutes ahead of our appointed time. But I was still far from first in line. The piazza was packed and people were trying to acquire tickets for Mass. One lady even asked if I would give up my ticket so she could attend! I politely declined, noting that the gold tickets were for concelebrating priests only. She was not impressed! So, we priests spent the next ninety minutes waiting patiently, and I ve accepting that this is just part of the deal in the Eternal City. Those cobblestones really do a number on one s back a chiropractor would make a fortune in Rome! But it provided ample opportunity to meet the other priests, whether Italian or English speakers, and I found this quite enjoyable. If it was a German or Slovenian, head-nods or a few words of English sufficed. A prayerful, yet jubilant spirit was kept throughout. While waiting I met Fr. Joseph Reilly from Newark, NJ and learned that he was the Rector of their Cathedral. I replied Father, you and I have at least two things in common we re both rectors and we are currently sharing an Archbishop! I wryly proffered an arm-wrestling contest winner take all for the permanent services of Archbishop Hebda, but he politely declined (he would have won!). We made our way to the Bronze steps where we waited for Mass to begin. There, final instructions soon followed in five languages (no, I did not need to be reminded to refrain from taking pictures during Mass!) and the long procession began. While I ended up towards the back of the reserved section for priests, it mattered little because we were all

5 there together concelebrating with the Holy Father. The Sistine Choir, composed of men and boys from the Basilica, provided the beautiful music. Readings, petitions and the gift bearers were provided by men, women and children from different countries, and the distribution of ashes began with the Cardinal Comastri, the Archpriest of the Basilica, imposing ashes upon the crown of the head of Pope Francis. The highlight for me was the commissioning ceremony at the end of Mass. The prayer asked the Lord to watch over these your servants, who we send forth as messengers of Mercy, liberation and of peace. Guide their steps with Your right hand and sustain them with the power of Your grace, so that they do not come under the weight of apostolic endeavors. May the voice of Christ resound in their words and in their gestures the heart of Christ It was so clear that the human aspect of the encounter is central for Pope Francis and even his commissioning prayer was a sober reminder of the role that we are called to play. I would not be surprised if he wrote the prayer himself. I will not soon forget this powerful exhortation and the brief, but extremely rewarding time I spent in Rome. And I felt uplifted by the prayers of so many from here and kept the good people from the Cathedral close in my prayers. The unexpected death of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia is a significant loss of a consistently conservative voice on the nation s highest court. Possessing a towering intellect, his incisive written opinions were occasionally punctuated with eclectic references to literature, history and even pop culture. Still, he was extremely friendly with those on the court with whom he disagreed, especially Ruth Bader Ginsburg. He was a devout Catholic and father of nine children, including a priest. I do not think the court will see the likes of such a powerful intellect for some time. Requiescat in pace. The folks from Crashed Ice are putting the final touches on the racecourse. As it is the final race of the series this year, we expect large crowds. As in past years, a few schedule adjustments will be made. The biggest is that our anticipatory Mass on Saturday February 27 will be moved up to 4:00 p.m. Confessions will be from 2:30-3:45 p.m. to allow for parking access. Additionally, on Friday February 26 we will offer Mass at 7:30 a.m., Stations of the Cross 12:00 Noon, followed by Daily Mass at 12:30 p.m. This Mass replaces the 5:15 p.m. Going green works! In comparing our electric bill from December 2014 to 2015, it is already abundantly clear that the new LED light bulbs we installed (did you even notice?) throughout the Church are already bearing fruit in the form of lower bills. We saw a 30% decrease, from $190 per day to $130 per day. That s progress, and we ll soon be changing the 100 bulbs in the main chandelier as well. On a tight budget, every bit of savings helps. Believe it or not, pitchers and catchers for the Minnesota Twins report to Fort Myers Monday for initial workouts. The full squad reports on Saturday, and the first Spring Training game is March 2 against the Red Sox. At a reception for a wedding recently held here, I spoke with one of the Twins executives (here as a guest) and he told me that some exciting changes were coming to the Center Field area. That s great, but I ll settle for 10 additional victories! Sincerely in Christ, Fr. John L. Ubel Rector CATHEDRAL CALENDAR Sunday, February 21 - Coffee and Donut Sunday Coffee and Donut Sunday after the 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. Masses 9:00 a.m. Calix Society Meeting - Assembly Room 11:15 a.m. Rosary for Life - Cana Chapel 6:00 p.m. Rosary for Life - Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Monday, February 22 - Chair of Saint Peter, Apostle Tuesday, February 23 Wednesday, February 24 8:30 a.m. Rediscover: Book Club - Hayden Hall 9:30 a.m. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd - Level 1 - Assembly Room 4:00 p.m.. Gospel of Luke, 6:36) serves as an invitation to follow the merciful example of the Father who asks us not to judge or condemn but to forgive and to give love and forgiveness without measure. The logo the work of Jesuit Father Marko I. Rupnik represents an image quite important to the early Church: that of the Son having taken upon his shoulders the lost soul demonstrating that it is the love of Christ that brings to completion the mystery of his incarnation culminating in redemption. The scene is captured within the so called mandorla (the shape of an almond), a figure quite important in early and medieval iconography, for it calls to mind the two natures of Christ, divine and human. The three concentric ovals, with colors progressively lighter as we move outward, suggest the movement of Christ who carries humanity out of the night of sin and death. Conversely, the depth of the darker color suggests the impenetrability of the love of the Father who forgives all.

7 Page 7 VOICES FROM THE ARICHVES The Chapel of Saint Peter....the first work... Msgr. Lawrence Ryan remembered, The first work of importance that was done [after the completion of the exterior in 1915] was the finishing of St. Peter s Chapel. The marble arrived early in December, Through the winter of , the Italian workmen toiled away in their sunny Italy style. In May, 1917, the work was complete much to the delight of those who knew what Gold Sienna Marble is; much to the disgust of not a few who thought that all marble is white! Saint Peter s Chapel, one of the last designs created by Masqueray, makes a strong statement about the primacy of the Papacy. Louis Millett s windows portray Saint Peter, the first bishop of Rome, and Benedict XV, the twohundredth-and-fifty-ninth successor of Saint Peter. Thus set in glass is the belief in the unbroken line of Roman pontiffs who trace their authority to the commission given by Christ to Saint Peter. Originally there were three stained glass windows. Directly behind the statue there was an ornamental window with symbols reinforcing the role of Peter: the Papal crown and keys, with the words, Pasce Agnos Meos, Pasce Oves Meas: Feed my lambs, feed my sheep. This window was covered in the 1950s, probably because the light that fell upon the statue detracted from the details of the Leon Hermant s powerful image of Saint Peter. Hermant also designed the mural in stucco and low relief on the celling of the Chapel. It depicts three events in the life of Saint Peter: the calling of Peter, Christ bestowing the keys, and the martyrdom of Peter. In the 1920s, Archbishop Dowling directed Albert Atkins to work in designing the panels above the grilles. The center panel images the Council of Jerusalem, when Paul came to Jerusalem to confer with Peter on the status of Gentiles in the early Christian community. After much debate and exchange of ideas, it is Peter who formulates the decision to keep the meaning of the gospel: all are invited to be saved through faith in the power of Christ. Note: The feast of the Chair of Saint Peter celebrates the papacy and Saint Peter as the first bishop of Rome; it is celebrated on February 22. ACSP.
