1 Saint of the Week St. Wenceslaus Son of the duke of Bohemian, Wenceslaus was born around 907 and was educated in Christianity by his grandmother, Saint Ludmila. In 921, he succeeded his father and struggled for freedom of worship against the pagan nobility and his brother Boleslas. He led a pious life. He escaped an ambush set by his brother but was murdered in 929. He was immediately venerated as a saint and was canonized in the next century. St. Wenceslas is the protector of brewers, prisoners and altar boys. He is the patron of the Czech Republic and Poland. The name Wenceslaus is from the Polish and means greater glory. ** Taken from Saints A Year in Faith and Art by Rosa Giorgi Please pray for the Church in our Diocese Heavenly Father, Bless your Church with an abundance of holy and zealous priests, deacons, brothers, and sisters. Give those you have called to the married state and those you have chosen to live as single persons in the world, the special graces that their lives require. Form us all in the likeness of your Son, so that in Him, with Him, and through Him, we may love you more deeply and serve you more faithfully, always and everywhere. With Mary we ask this through Christ our Lord. This week we pray especially for: John Duranso of St. Michael s Parish, Wisconsin Rapids, WI College I St. John Vianney Seminary Prayer Intention of the Week: That professionals in every walk of life may grow rich in the sight of God by dedicating their skills to building a Culture of Life that protects every human being from conception to natural death. 2 2 Welcome to Our Lady of Peace Parish Marshfield From the earliest years of Christianity (less than 100 years after Christ), Christians knew that they were a local church when they gathered to celebrate the Eucharist on the Lords day. And they knew that they were truly complete as a church when they celebrated the Eucharist together with their bishop as presider. We welcome Bishop Callahan to our parish for the glorious occasion of the Confirmation of our teenagers. The love that a pastor or Bishop has for the young people of the Church especially is to mirror the love of Jesus. I remember how moved I was at World Youth Day in 2000 in Rome as I watched the Holy Father inspire more than 200,000 young people in the depths of their souls, where he planted hope and trust in Jesus. As we witness our Confirmation students being sealed with the gifts of the Holy Spirit by our Bishop with the sacred chrism oil, let's pray that the gifts they receive from the Holy Spirit be fanned into a flame that enables them to radiate Jesus Christ in this world so very much in need of Him. And as I have said before I say again, this really is a remarkable bunch of young people being confirmed, the kind that make a pastor proud. God has been very generous to us, and lot of good things are happening at Our Lady of Peace. I hope to see all of your smiling faces at our fall festival enjoying each other's company and reassuring each other by your spirit of hope and good cheer that the Lord is indeed to be found at OLP. Yours in faith, Father Berns From Our Pastor At Peace with the Lord Bill Nugent Whose Mass of Christian Burial was on September 18, 2017 Please remember Bill and his family in your prayers. Gift Presentation: Would you consider carrying up the offertory gifts at Mass with your family, your spouse or even by yourself? All you need to do is let the ushers know before Mass that you are willing to do it. It would be wonderful to see new faces presenting to the Lord our earthly gifts that become the Eucharist. How do we talk about morality in a world that no longer believes in truth? This 8-part study program gives us an important key to respond effectively to relativism a Catholic moral worldview. Only Christ can lead us to the love of the Father in the Spirit and make us share in the life of the Holy Trinity (Pope Saint John Paul II, On Catechesis, 5). The RCIA program consists of classes to help us grow in the knowledge and practices of the Catholic faith so that we can come to a fuller understanding of Jesus Christ. Our RCIA classes are available for anyone who: - is considering full membership in the Catholic Faith Community whether unbaptized, or baptized in another faith tradition. - is an adult Catholic who needs to prepare for the sacrament of Confirmation - is an adult who wants to grow in knowledge of the faith and practices of the Catholic Church - is an adult willing to share his/her faith with others. RCIA This year s RCIA classes will begin on Mon., Sept. 18, 2017 at 6:30pm. Meetings will be held in the conference room of our administration building. Adjustments of date and time necessitated by people s schedules will be made as needed. To register for classes or for additional information please contact Sister Virdean Meyer at or virdeanmeyer@hotmail.com ADULT EDUCATION CLASSES - FALL OF 2017 BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP Book: Bearing False Witness by Rodney Stark As we all know and as many of our well established textbooks argued for decades, The Inquisition was one of the most frightening and bloody chapters in Western history, Pope Pius XII was anti-semitic and rightfully called Hitler s Pope, the Dark Ages were a stunting of the progress of knowledge to be redeemed only by the secular spirit of the Enlightenment, and the religious Crusades were an early example of the rapacious Western thirst for riches and power. But what if these long held beliefs were all wrong? In this stunning, powerful, and ultimately persuasive book, Rodney Stark, one of the most highly regarded sociologists of religion and bestselling author of The Rise of Christianity argues that some of our most firmly held ideas about history, ideas that paint the Catholic Church in the least positive light are, in fact, fiction. Why have we held these wrongheaded ideas so strongly and for so long? And, if our beliefs are wrong, what, in fact, is the truth? In each chapter of his book Stark takes on a wellestablished anti-catholic myth, gives a fascinating history of how each myth became the conventional wisdom, and presents a startling picture of the real truth. In the end, readers will not only have a more accurate history of the Catholic Church, they will come to understand why it became unfairly maligned for so long.
