Maintaining her vow of virginity, she converted her husband, who accepted baptism and died a martyr. Cecilia refused to sacrifice to the idols and was beheaded. The figure of this saint is closely tied to music, perhaps because the passio that relates her story refers to how during her wedding as the organs were playing, Cecilia sung in her heart to the Lord. Since the 14th century it has been customary to depict her together with musical instruments, particularly an organ. St. Cecilia is the protector of music, musicians, makers of stringed instruments, poets and singers. 2 2 Welcome to Our Lady of Peace Parish Marshfield As I write this on Monday from the heated comfort of my room in the granary, I think I have everything ready for my brothers and nephews to come for the opening weekend of deer season. And I thank my friend Monsignor Hundt for taking care of OLP this weekend. Maybe my granary room could use an interior decorator, but I like what I've done with the place, and my nephews love sleeping in here while I sleep in the cold up on the second floor. The walls of this room are covered with family pictures from years gone by. There is a picture of my father with an enormous deer he got in The antlers hang over the picture. Next to it are antlers from Hayward, I recently did the funeral for the man who got that deer. There is a large picture frame containing memorabilia from the 2008 wild ginseng season with my brother Paul. Near it is a picture of my brother Mark on my Vespa in front of the Vatican in There are a lot of pictures of nice fish but none caught by me, ha! My cello hangs on the wall in a handsome walnut holder I made a few years ago, adding a bit of class to this rustic place. But my favorite thing on the wall is a collection of pictures of my nephews Tommy and Tyler in their blaze orange, taken last season. So now this family time around deer season is about making memories with them and for them. This week I will be thanking God for my family, for life, and for the wonderful people of Our Lady of Peace. Yours in Jesus, Fr. First Eucharist and Confirmation - Ongoing catechesis is essential in the faith formation of the youth of Our Lady Peace Parish (OLP). Children must be enrolled continually from the First Grade in either Columbus Catholic Schools or OLP s Religious Education Programs to receive either the Sacraments of First Eucharist or Confirmation. RCIA Christian Initiation of Adults - Anyone interested in joining the Catholic Church should contact Sister Virdean Meyer at Classes begin each Fall. Marriage - Knowing how important it is to marry in the Church, we are happy to see weddings take place in our parish. Father Berns looks forward to meeting with engaged couples to assist them in marriage preparation. As this preparation takes time, couples are asked to contact Fr. Berns 8-12 months before the wedding. Anointing of the Sick - If any parishioner is ill at home or going into the hospital and would like to receive the Anointing of the Sick, please contact the Parish Office for Father Berns at A Mass of Healing with anointing is celebrated during the year. New Parishioners - To join our community, please register at the Parish Office, the church Welcome Desk or call Gift Presentation: Would you consider carrying up the offertory gifts at Mass with your family, your spouse or even by yourself? 5 5 Welcome to Our Lady of Peace Parish Marshfield Taking the Yoke of Christ to Have a Relationship with God Our Father (Part 2) by Arturo Now just because God the Father reaches out to us, this does not mean that we are going to automatically respond to the unconditional love that the Father has for us. After all, it is because God loves us so much that He allows us to freely respond to the love that he has for us. Just because Jesus, who is God, decides to reveal to each of us the love that the Father has for us; this does not mean that we are going to immediately respond to this call. St Matthew, who at first was a tax collector, as tradition tells us, certainly knew that it was not enough to just know and experience the Love that Jesus has for us. Rather, as St. Matthew encountered Jesus Christ and experienced the Love that God the Father has for us; it compelled him to transform his life by leaving behind the life of a tax collector and becoming an apostle of Jesus Christ. Saint Matthew, therefore, becomes an instrument by which God, through the personal experience that St. Matthew had of Jesus Christ, reveals himself to you and I and to future generations of Christians who will hear the Gospel story that St. Matthew wrote for us. The only possible way in which you and I can respond freely to God is by the invitation that Jesus makes to all of us. This invitation to come to Jesus, also contains a promise that serves as an incentive for us to respond back to the love that God has for us. The invitation and promise that Jesus makes to all of us as recorded by St. Matthew tells us that Jesus said Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me for I am meek and humble of heart, and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light (Mat 11:28-30). The first words of this invitation are come to me. These three words not only summarize the entire ministry of Jesus but also show us the authority that Jesus, who is the Son of God, has. This invitation in the biblical world would be unthinkable for an individual human being to make, because the people at that time knew that only God called people to himself. For people to call others to themselves would have been a form of idolatry and so when Jesus tells us to come to him, he is inviting us to trust in Him who is the Son of God. The rest of the invitation, where Jesus talks to those who are burdened, and labored shows us that the love of God is for all of us and unconditional to all of God s Children. The burdens and labors that Jesus refers to are our sins, our personal struggles and shortcomings that, with His love, God is ready to transform and relieve us. That would make our lives a lot easier, rather than us trying to deal with these struggles by ourselves, which makes our lives a lot harder to endure. We are trying to be self-sufficient to the point that we push God out of our lives. The invitation of Jesus concludes with a command as St. Matthew tells that Jesus said, take my yoke upon you and learn from me for I am meek and humble of heart (Mt 11:29-30). For us, the picture of a yoke is strange (the only reason why I know what a yoke is is because when I was growing up my Dad used a yoke and horses to pull the plow to prepare the ground to plant the corn or other crops). For the ancient Jews at the time of Jesus, the idea of the yoke was used to express one s obligation to God. The Jews would have the yoke of the Law (the obligation or burden of the Law of God), the yoke of the commandments, and the yoke of faith. These obligations/ responsibilities at the time of Jesus were difficult to understand and hard to follow. In this context, when Jesus tells us to take my yoke upon you and learn from me, Jesus is telling us not to worry about following all of those rules and regulations that existed at that time, rather Jesus sets a new example for you and me to follow in order to live a right relationship with God our father. For us to have a personal relationship with God the Father, you and I must attempt to emulate the gentleness, humility, and meekness that Jesus shows to us.
