1 Saint of the Week Sts. Cyricus & Julitta According to legend, these were a mother and son killed under Diocletian, perhaps in Tarsus, in Cilicia (Turkey), in the 4th century. Cyricus (Quiricus), only three years old, died all the while professing his faith when he was thrown violently to the ground by the magistrate who was interrogating them; his mother, having witnessed this, was beheaded. Their cult was widespread in Europe, and since the Middle Ages they usually have been depicted together. Cyricus is a protector of children. The name Cyricus is from the Greek and means lord ; Julitta is Latin and means content. ** Taken from Saints A Year in Faith and Art by Rosa Giorgi Please pray for the Church in our Diocese Heavenly Father, Bless your Church with an abundance of holy and zealous priests, deacons, brothers, and sisters. Give those you have called to the married state and those you have chosen to live as single persons in the world, the special graces that their lives require. Form us all in the likeness of your Son, so that in Him, with Him, and through Him, we may love you more deeply and serve you more faithfully, always and everywhere. With Mary we ask this through Christ our Lord. This week we pray especially for: Arturo Vigueras of St. Peter Parish of Stevens Point, WI Theology II Mundelein Seminary Prayer Intention of the Week: That those who are suffering from illness, oppression, or discrimination may join their pain to the cross of Christ, and find new strength June 11, 2017 The Most Holy Trinity
2 2 Welcome to Our Lady of Peace Parish Marshfield There was once a story of a Pope who wanted a portrait of God. So he called all the artisans of Rome. He told them that whoever could perfectly portray God on canvas would receive a papal Award. The artisans gathered inside the Vatican workroom and each one started to paint a portrait of God. They worked on their masterpieces for several months except for one painter named Guiseppe. Being old, Guiseppe would fall asleep in front of his canvas while thinking how he would paint God. Finally, the time came when the Pope would judge their paintings. His Holiness toured the large gallery and looked at each painting beside its artist. God was represented in many ways: an Old Loving Man, a Shepherd, a King on a Throne, a Crucified, a Dove and several other ways. Yet to the surprise of all, the Pope was not satisfied with any of the portraits. While the Pope rested in a corner, he heard Guiseppe snoring in front of his canvas. He went to the old painter and saw the empty canvas in front of him. This is it! the Pope exclaimed, this is the perfect portrayal of God. The cardinals, bishops and all the artisans gathered around His Holiness holding the canvas with nothing painted on it. Your holiness, the canvas is empty and it has no portrait of God, the cardinals told him. Exactly, the Pope said, that is how God looks Indescribable! Trinity Sunday. Our Catholic faith teaches us that there is only One God but Three Divine Persons God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit or Three in One! But why it happens this way, One God but Three divine Persons? The mystery of the most Holy Trinity is a basic doctrine of Faith in Christianity, understandable not with our heads but with our hearts. It teaches us that there are three distinct Persons in one God, sharing the same Divine Nature, co-equal and coeternal. Our mind cannot grasp this doctrine which teaches that = 1 and not 3. But we believe in this Mystery because Jesus who is God taught it clearly, the Evangelists recorded it, the Fathers of the Church tried to explain it and the Councils of Nicaea and Constantinople defined it as a dogma of Christian Faith. Happy Feast. God Bless. From Father Rajan At Peace with the Lord Robert Binzel went to his eternal rest on June 3, 2017 Please remember Robert and his family in your prayers. Gift Presentation: Would you consider carrying up the offertory gifts at Mass with your family, your spouse, or even by yourself? All you need to do is let the ushers know before Mass that you are willing to do it. It would be wonderful to see new faces presenting, to the Lord, our earthly gifts that become the Eucharist. Kara can be reached at the parish office office@olpmarshfield.com or call HOLY WATER One of the beautiful sacramentals given to us by the Church is Holy water which is always blessed during the Easter Vigil service. The blessing of this water reminds us of Christ, the living water, and of the sacrament of Baptism in which we were born of water and the Holy Spirit. Whenever we are sprinkled with this holy water or use it in blessing ourselves upon entering the church or at home, we thank God for his priceless gift of baptism and we ask for his help to keep us faithful to the sacrament we have received in faith. Holy water is always available in the large receptacle in the front entrance of the church. Small bottles are provided for anyone who wishes to take holy water to use at home. Do You Love Divine Mercy? Religious Items For Sale Everyone who wants to live Mercy and the spiritual life more deeply is welcome to attend our twice monthly meetings. Sister Mary Veronica will lead us through teaching, prayer and fellowship. Our next meeting will be on Thursday, June 7 PM at Corpus Christi Church: (10075 HWY BB - Bakerville, WI). Questions? There are rosaries of different colors and designs (including full rosaries, rosary bracelets and rosaries for your car rear view mirror), catechisms and greeting cards for First Communion, Graduation, Sympathy, Thinking of You, Birthday and Ordination. There is a plan to expand our options, please let Cathy know of items you think should be included. Cathy@olpmarshfield.com On Sunday June 18th there will be a 2:00 PM Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church followed by a Eucharistic Procession to Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church for Benediction in celebration of this great feast day. This will be followed by a pot luck dinner at Dillenburg Hall. Each year dioceses around the country arrange special events to highlight the importance of defending religious freedom. The Fortnight for Freedom is from June 21 the vigil of the Feasts of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More to July 4, Independence Day. Religious liberty is not only about our ability to go to Mass on Sunday or pray the Rosary at home. It is about whether we can make our contribution to the common good of all Americans. Can we do the good works our faith calls us to do, without having to compromise that very same faith? Without religious liberty properly understood, all Americans suffer, deprived of the essential contribution in education, health care, feeding the hungry, civil rights, and social services that religious Americans make every day, both here at home and overseas. What is at stake is whether America will continue to have a free, creative, and robust civil society or whether the state alone will determine who gets to contribute to the common good, and how they get to do it. Religious believers are part of American civil society, which includes neighbors helping each other, community associations, fraternal service clubs, sports leagues, and youth groups. All these Americans make their contribution to our common life, and they do not need the permission of the government to do so. Restrictions on religious liberty are an attack on civil society and the American genius for voluntary associations. Join Fr. Martin for the Fortnight for Freedom Rosary walk on July 2, We will walk from St John s 10 Commandments monument to the 10 Commandments monument at the Hall for the last time.
