1 Saint of the Week St. Brigid of Ireland Brigid (Bridget, Bride) lived in Ireland and died around 525. She chose the religious life when still very young and was the founder and abbess of the great monastery at Kildare. Her cult is strongest in Ireland, where she is second only to Patrick (who is said to have baptized her), but has spread elsewhere, with churches dedicated to her in England and Scotland as well as on the continent of Europe. In art, she often appears wearing the white gown of a nun and the black veil of an abbess; she is sometimes accompanied by a cow, in memory of her work in a dairy as a young girl. St. Brigid is the protector of milkmen, poets, blacksmiths, healers, cows, and farmyard animals. 2 2 Welcome to Our Lady of Peace Parish Marshfield Believe it or not, there was a time in the Catholic Church when bishops refused to ordain new priests. There was an overstock of priests, and they didn t think they needed any new ones! Such was the case in Bohemia and in much of Europe in 1835, when John Neumann sought ordination. When his own bishop wouldn t ordain him, he sought ordination in other places in Europe, only to be turned down for the same reason. He had learned English, so he wrote to the bishop in New York, who agreed to ordain him. Father John Neumann was a hardworking, humble, holy priest, one of only 36 for the 200,000 Catholics stretching from Lake Ontario to Pennsylvania. Wanting to have a community of faith and support, he joined the Redemptorist order and continued his ministry especially to the poor and abandoned. In 1852, he was appointed Bishop of Philadelphia where he made his permanent mark on the Catholic Church in our country. He was the first to organize a diocesan Catholic school system. He increased the number of Catholic schools in his diocese from two to one hundred. Having spent himself completely in the service of his people, died at 48 years of age. Bishop John Neumann was canonized a saint in 1977 and is recognized as the patron saint of Catholic schools. Let s invoke his prayers from heaven as we enter Catholic Schools Week today. The Church in Marshfield is blessed to have Columbus Catholic Schools, and we have much to celebrate and good reason to be proud. Bishop Callaghan came to our parish during my first year here to celebrate Mass with all the teachers and administrators of the Catholic schools of our diocese. Our Lady of Peace was packed to the rafters that day. Our bishop gave his usual jovial yet passionate homily, beginning with the question, Why do we have Catholic schools? Some would answer that with, Catholic schools pass on the faith, or Catholic schools offer an excellent education and smaller classroom sizes, or a host of other answers. Bishop Callaghan that day gave his answer: We have Catholic schools because our children have souls..and souls can be lost. Yes, his answer was sobering as he made clear the responsibility we have in our Catholic schools. I thank all of our faithful families at OLP who entrust their children to Columbus Catholic Schools. I thank our teachers and administrators. It warms my heart to see the staff members and parents of our Catholic schools at daily Mass. I thank you parishioners for your financial support of Catholic education in our city. Our Catholic schools are worth every bit of our support, recognizing that our children have souls as we all do, and we want them to be forever with Jesus. Sacraments Baptism - Parents requesting to have a child baptized are invited to call Father Berns directly at He will assist with any baptism preparation and scheduling a date. Reconciliation - Celebrated on Saturdays from 4:30-5:15pm and upon request. Communal Penance Services are held during Advent and Lent. First Eucharist and Confirmation - Ongoing catechesis is essential in the faith formation of the youth of Our Lady Peace Parish (OLP). Therefore, any child must be enrolled continually from the First Grade, in either Columbus Catholic Schools or OLP s Religious Education Programs, to receive either the Sacraments of First Eucharist or Confirmation. RCIA Christian Initiation of Adults - Anyone interested in joining the Catholic Church should contact Sister Virdean Meyer at Classes begin each Fall. Marriage - Knowing how important it is to marry in the Church, we are happy to see weddings take place in our parish. Father Berns looks forward to meeting with engaged couples to assist them in marriage preparation. As this preparation takes time, couples are asked to contact Fr. Berns 8-12 months before the wedding. Anointing of the Sick - If any parishioner is ill at home or going into the hospital and would like to receive the Anointing of the Sick, please contact Father Berns at A Mass of Healing with anointing is celebrated during the year. New Parishioners - To join our community, please register at the Parish Office or call Ext. 2. Gift Presentation: Would you consider carrying up the offertory gifts at Mass with your family, your spouse, or even by yourself? All you need to do is let the ushers know before Mass that you are willing to do it. It would be wonderful to see new faces presenting before the Lord our earthly gifts that become the Eucharist.

That Man is You Week 1 To Hear the Voice of God All men are encouraged to join us Tuesday morning at 6:15 am for the start of the Spring Semester of That Man is You! The focus this spring is Spiriitual Direction, and we start with a review of Mother Theresa's call. OLP INTERMEDIATE-SCIENCE UNIT Subjects studied at Columbus Catholic provide the ideas and materials that help our students make sense of information we encounter in everyday life. At Our Lady of Peace Intermediate School 4th graders recently studied a Science unit titled Changes to the Earth s Surface. Students worked on identifying Wisconsin s major landforms, learned about weathering and erosion, and discovered how these changes affect our world. One of the class favorites in this unit was learning about what causes landslides and discussing how much damage they cause. Columbus Catholic Schools; where students love to learn. 5 5 Welcome to Our Lady of Peace Parish Marshfield Yarn Request for Loving Stitches A basket will be set up by the Welcome Desk in the front lobby of Church for donations of skeins of yarn. Baby yarn and 3.5/4 ply yarn is preferred. There is no preference in color. Monetary donations for the purchase of yarn may be made at the Welcome Desk. People in this ministry knit or crochet shawls, baby blankets, baby booties, lap blankets, hats, mittens, and scarves for those who are in need of comfort or celebrating some joyous occasion. Volunteers who wish, meet once a month to knit or crochet and prayerfully share the joys of this Ministry. Contact: Nancy Young if you are interested for more information. REMINDER TO THOSE MAKING BABY BLANKETS All blankets must be at least 30 by 30 inches square. Resisting Happiness Week 6 Activity Go to Mass Twice This week s activity comes from Chapter 18 in Resisting Happiness: Go to Mass twice this week, Sunday and any other day you like (Mass times listed on page 2 of the bulletin). Pay attention to how it focuses you and fills you with peace. And another opportunity not a Mass, but very powerful have you considered spending an hour in the John Paul II Adoration Chapel? Eucharistic Adoration: Scheduled every hour, 24 hours per day, every day of the year (with a couple exceptions) in the John Paul II Chapel located in the Administration Building. Don t hesitate to practice your faith in The Real Presence! There are a few hours waiting for the faithful to sign on to: 9:00 am on Mondays and 1:00 pm on Saturdays.
