1 Saint of the Week Sts. Nereus & Achilleus Nereus and Achilleus were martyred under Nero, Domitian, or Trajan. The information about them is scarce and legendary, but their cult is ancient, dating back to at least the 4th century, and the discovery of bodies on the site of their tomb attests to their historicity. The tradition according to which they were the servants of Flavia Domitilla or were Praetorian soldiers is unfounded. They are usually depicted dressed as soldiers. Both names are of Greek origin. 2 2 Welcome to Our Lady of Peace Parish Marshfield While I was assigned to Stratford just before moving to Our Lady of Peace five years ago, I would sometimes write my return address on an envelope as Stratford upon Avon. It s a silly thing, but I amused myself doing it. The village of Stratford on the Avon River in England is the home of William Shakespeare ( ) and his Globe Theatre. American Players Theater near Spring Green, Wisconsin is modeled after the Globe, and there I watched Hamlet and Midsummer Night s Dream on high school field trips. One of my favorite courses in college was a semester spent reading and studying his plays. So it was a great privilege for me to stand over Shakespeare s grave in the Church of the Holy Trinity in Stratford on Avon in the summer of 1995 and make some prayers there, praising God for enabling Shakespeare to make his enormous contribution to the world, and asking the Lord to give him heavenly glory. While visiting his grave was an honor for me, I recently learned that my father one -upped me, mentioning casually that he had slept in Shakespeare s bed during his military stint in England in the early 1950 s. Now I m not into conspiracy theories, but you might have heard an interesting theory about Shakespeare.... that he was a secret Catholic. If he was in fact Catholic, he would have needed to be secretive about it if he wanted to stay alive. Life was very difficult for Catholics at that time in England. Queen Elizabeth, daughter to King Henry the 8 th, legislated that anyone faithful to the pope be hanged, drawn and quartered. At least 63 Catholic priests were put to death by the English throne and are recognized as martyrs by the Catholic Church today. The reasons given in support of Shakespeare s being a Catholic are interesting. I hope one day to meet him in heaven and ask him myself. This topic coming up in conversation with my father has made me consider again how much courage it took to be a Catholic in that time and place. We see today how much courage it takes to be a Christian in certain dangerous parts of the world. They need our prayers, and we ask for courage for ourselves, the same courage that the Holy Spirit gave the apostles as we hear read in the first reading at every Mass during the Easter season from the Acts of the Apostles. With courage (the virtue of Fortitude) comes liberation from fear. Fear is often the moving force behind the conflicts we encounter. Fortitude brings about a joyful devotion to Jesus Christ no matter what small sacrifices it might require of me. God bless you with a beautiful May! Yours, Fr. Reconciliation - Celebrated on Saturdays from 4:45-5:15 pm and upon request. Communal Penance Services are held during Advent and Lent. First Eucharist and Confirmation - Ongoing catechesis is essential in the faith formation of the youth of Our Lady Peace Parish (OLP). Therefore, any child must be enrolled continually from the First Grade, in either Columbus Catholic Schools or OLP s Religious Education Programs, to receive either the Sacraments of First Eucharist or Confirmation. RCIA Christian Initiation of Adults - Anyone interested in joining the Catholic Church should contact Sister Virdean Meyer at Classes begin each Fall. Marriage - Knowing how important it is to marry in the Church, we are happy to see weddings take place in our parish. Father Berns looks forward to meeting with engaged couples to assist them in marriage preparation. As this preparation takes time, couples are asked to contact Fr. Berns 8-12 months before the wedding. Anointing of the Sick - If any parishioner is ill at home or going into the hospital and would like to receive the Anointing of the Sick, please contact Father Berns at A Mass of Healing with anointing is celebrated during the year. New Parishioners - To join our community, please register at the Parish Office, the church welcome desk, or call Ext. 2. Gift Presentation: Would you consider carrying up the offertory gifts at Mass with your family, your spouse, or even by yourself? All you need to do is let the ushers know before Mass that you are willing to do it. It would be wonderful to see new faces presenting, to the Lord, our earthly gifts that become the Eucharist.

Baby Bottle Campaign OLP will be participating in the Baby Bottle Campaign to raise funds for Birthright. Baby Bottles will be available at the church entrances. The campaign will run from April 29 through May 28. Collect your loose change and make a difference in a young child s life. Baby Bottles may be returned to the Welcome Desk, the baskets at the church entrances or the parish office. For those who attended the Rebuilt event on Monday, March 27 but were not able to get the book and for those who were unable to attend and would like to know more about the process, it will be available at the Welcome Desk after all the Masses. A bus has been acquired for parishioners to have transportation to La Crosse and back on June 24 th. The price is $15.00 per person, and is to be paid when you register. Space is limited to 49 bus seats and will be filled on First Come & Paid basis. Please register by calling the Christ the King Parish and talk to Parish Secretary, Judy. A required Mandatory Adult Medical Release and Permission Form is needed and Judy will provide one for you when you call to register. 5 5 Welcome to Our Lady of Peace Parish Marshfield HOLY WATER The Easter Season is a good time to remind us of one of the beautiful sacramentals given to us by the Church. Water is always blessed during the Easter Vigil service. The blessing of this water reminds us of Christ, the living water, and of the sacrament of Baptism in which we were born of water and the Holy Spirit. Whenever we are sprinkled with this holy water or use it in blessing ourselves upon entering the church or at home, we thank God for his priceless gift of baptism and we ask for his help to keep us faithful to the sacrament we have received in faith. Holy water is always available in the large receptacle in the front entrance of the church. Small bottles are provided for anyone who wishes to take holy water to use at home. Religious Items For Sale We have religious items for sale in the parish office at 510 S. Columbus and at the Welcome Desk in church. There are rosaries of different colors and designs (including full rosaries, rosary bracelets and rosaries for your car rear view mirror), catechisms and greeting cards for First Communion, Graduation, Sympathy, Thinking of You, Birthday and Ordination. Recently students from OLP and Columbus Middle School hopped aboard the STEM Shuttle and took a trip to space. The STEM Shuttle is like a science classroom on wheels -- and it makes stops at hundreds of schools. For a time, we were no longer in Marshfield. We were in space! Students learned about the difference in gravity and were able to see how astronauts live. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The STEM Shuttle is a hands-on activity center where students spend time on board at different work stations that include; how to design a space station, working in space, fixing the Hubble Telescope, lessons on lunar and solar eclipses and more.
