1 Saint of the Week Saint Bernardino of Siena Bernardino degli Albizzeschi was born at Massa Marittima, Italy, in A Franciscan priest, Bernardino was a firm preacher of penitence, condemning gambling, usury, superstition and political strife. He spread devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus as a symbol of the Lord and three times refused the nomination as bishop. He died in 1444 and was canonized in He is depicted in a Franciscan habit and has a weary face; his attribute is the monogram of the name of Jesus (IHS), and he is often shown with three miters at his feet, symbolic of his three refusals of the post of bishop. He is invoked against hemorrhages and hoarseness. St. Bernardino is the protector of preachers, publishers, woolworkers, weavers and boxers. 2 2 Welcome to Our Lady of Peace Parish Marshfield From Our Pastor I don t know why, but I still hold on to boxes of my handwritten notes from my five years of theology school. Yes, there is some good theological stuff there, and I once thought I might go through them again. That never happened. When I glanced through them recently, I remembered how furiously I wrote my notes, trying to keep up with the lecturer, who was usually a Jesuit priest. So I used lots of abbreviations, most commonly HMC. As you might guess, they made lots of references to the Church, so I thought I would abbreviate it by HMC, referring to Holy Mother Church, probably the most classic (and pious) reference to the Catholic Church. I loved that from the first time I heard it. The Church is our mother who loves us and provides for us and comforts us and feeds us and helps us grow. God bless all of you holy mothers on this Mothers Day weekend. May the Lord in his goodness show you his favor for all the love you have shown! The Church is especially known to be Mother in the local parish. As you love your mothers, we all love Our Lady of Peace. Last Sunday I promised to print a prayer in this bulletin. The prayer is something I want to begin praying at the start of each Mass. Soon we will probably have it memorized. Until then, you might pray it in your homes or cut it out of the bulletin and bring it to Sunday Mass so that we can all pray it together (I try to avoid leaving pieces of paper in the pews). Here it is: Prayer for Our Lady of Peace Parish Dear God, Father of Our Savior Jesus, Father of Our Lady of Peace, Father whom I love and need, bless our parish. Help us with your Holy Spirit to love you more, to show that love in our love for those around us and in our fervent praying and singing. Help us grow as you have in mind, all to the glory of your Name, making Jesus Christ manifest, bringing hope, joy, and the Gospel to all who enter this church. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen! A Novena is a tradition of praying a certain prayer(s) for nine days. Its origin dates back to the nine days that the Apostles and Mary spent together in prayer between the Ascension of Jesus into Heaven and the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. This novena was first prayed at the direction of Our Lord Himself when He sent the Apostles back to Jerusalem to pray and wait until you are clothed with power from on high by the coming of the third Person of the Blessed Trinity. (Luke 24:49) Gift Presentation: Would you consider carrying up the offertory gifts at Mass with your family, your spouse or even by yourself? All you need to do is let the ushers know before Mass that you are willing to do it. It would be wonderful to see new faces presenting, to the Lord, our earthly gifts that become the Eucharist. Reconciliation - Celebrated on Saturdays from 4:45-5:15 pm and upon request. Communal Penance Services are held during Advent and Lent. First Eucharist and Confirmation - Ongoing catechesis is essential in the faith formation of the youth of Our Lady Peace Parish (OLP). Therefore, any child must be enrolled continually from the First Grade, in either Columbus Catholic Schools or OLP s Religious Education Programs, to receive either the Sacraments of First Eucharist or Confirmation. RCIA Christian Initiation of Adults - Anyone interested in joining the Catholic Church should contact Sister Virdean Meyer at Classes begin each Fall. Marriage - Knowing how important it is to marry in the Church, we are happy to see weddings take place in our parish. Father Berns looks forward to meeting with engaged couples to assist them in marriage preparation. As this preparation takes time, couples are asked to contact Fr. Berns 8-12 months before the wedding. Anointing of the Sick - If any parishioner is ill at home or going into the hospital and would like to receive the Anointing of the Sick, please contact Father Berns at A Mass of Healing with anointing is celebrated during the year. Attention Engaged Couples: Registration is now open for the Married Love: Two Becoming One classes in Marshfield starting this fall. The dates for are: August 19, November 4, February 17, and April 7. Couples should first contact their priest and then plan to attend a class at least six months before their wedding. Be sure to register early because classes fill quickly. Over the years, the events held there were getting fewer and smaller and the expenses are still there as the building and equipment are getting older. MAPLE My name is Becca Kitzhaber and I am a junior at Columbus Catholic High School. Our Junior Class recently took a field trip to The Bywater, a 40-acre forest, where we learned about the maple syrup process. Mr. Jevaltas, the owner of the forest and a maple syrup hobbyist, teaches Literature at Columbus Catholic High School. As part of the field trip, students wrote nature reflections in a log cabin on the property. We identified trees and participated in a series of team building activities. I enjoyed doing all the different team building activities. They added a fun physical aspect to the day that was already intellectually stimulating. This is the 36th year that Mr. Jevaltas has taken students of varying ages to his property providing them with this unique, educational experience. Columbus Catholic learning with a higher purpose. Water is always blessed during the Easter Vigil service. The blessing of this water reminds us of Christ, the living water, and of the sacrament of Baptism in which we were born of water and the Holy Spirit. Whenever we are sprinkled with this holy water or use it in blessing ourselves upon entering the church or at home, we thank God for his priceless gift of baptism and we ask for his help to keep us faithful to the sacrament we have received in faith. Holy water is always available in the large receptacle in the front entrance of the church. Small bottles are provided for anyone who wishes to take holy water to use at home.
