1 Saint of the Week Saint Cunegund Born around 978, daughter of Siegfried, first earl of Luxembourg, and Hedwig of Germany, Cunegund was given in marriage to Henry, duke of Bavaria, shortly after elected emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. Together with her husband she conducted an exemplary life and, at his death, she ret6ired as a Benedictine nun, laying aside all symbols of power to join the convent of Kaufungen, which she had founded. She died around The cult of Saint Cunegund was approved by Innocent III in St. Cunegund is depicted in regal clothes and often holds a model of the cathedral of Bamberg; on occasion she appears in a monastic habit. Cunegund is the patron saint of Luxembourg. The name Cunegund is from the German and means brave in war. ** Taken from Saints A Year in Faith and Art by Rosa Giorgi Please pray for the Church in our Diocese Heavenly Father, Bless your Church with an abundance of holy and zealous priests, deacons, brothers, and sisters. Give those you have called to the married state and those you have chosen to live as single persons in the world, the special graces that their lives require. Form us all in the likeness of your Son, so that in Him, with Him, and through Him, we may love you more deeply and serve you more faithfully, always and everywhere. With Mary we ask this through Christ our Lord. This week we pray especially for: Michael Iwanski of St. John the Baptist of Marshfield, WI College IV St. John Vianney Seminary Prayer Intention of the Week: That all who have died may have eternal rest, and that all who mourn them February 26, 2017 may have the Lord s Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time consolation
2 2 Welcome to Our Lady of Peace Parish Marshfield Lent starts in a few days, with Ash Wednesday this week! We welcome this penitential season of prayer, fasting and almsgiving as we prepare our hearts and souls for the solemn observance of the Easter triduum. Ash Wednesday Masses will be offered at 7:00 a.m. and 8:30 (with Columbus Catholic Schools), and again at 5:30 on Ash Wednesday and each Wednesday during Lent. Our Lady of Peace will be continuing our habit of the Bread and Broth soup suppers following these Wednesday evening Masses. You know we re not supposed to let the left hand know what the right hand is doing when it comes to our fasting during lent, right? So I probably am not supposed to tell you that I will be starting my second go-around of a cabbage soup diet starting on Ash Wednesday. So that afternoon, I will make about 8 gallons of it... 4 for me, and 4 to share at our first Bread and Broth. Remember that on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, we are to abstain from any meat and not eat between meals, keeping our food to one main meal during the day (except for parishioners with health conditions or of advanced years). Even McDonalds becomes Catholic during Lent! You see them advertising McFisholay sandwiches (or whatever they re called) every Friday of Lent. Supper clubs advertise their fish fries. Of course I abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and Fridays of Lent...and I generally stay in. There is nothing penitential about a Friday fish fry in Wisconsin. A friend once told our class back in seminary, We get out of Easter what we put into Lent. Without thinking too hard about God s graces in proportion to my sacrifices, I think my friend was on to something. We undertake these disciplines happily because they are the training ground for our souls. If I carry them out in a real desire to turn from sin to Jesus, He becomes more important and I less important. Yours, Fr. Berns From Our Pastor THOUGHTS FROM FR. RAJAN A man married a beautiful girl. He loved her very much. One day she developed a skin disease. Slowly she started to lose her beauty. It so happened that one day her husband left for a tour. After returning he met with an accident and lost his eyesight, however their married life continued as usual. But as days passed she lost her beauty gradually. The blind husband did not know this and there was not any difference in their married life. He continued to love her and she also loved him very much. One day she died. Her death brought him great sorrow. He finished all her last rites and wanted to leave that town. A man from behind called and said, now how will you be able to walk all alone? All these days your wife used to help you. He replied, I am not blind. I was acting, because if she knew l could see her ugliness it would have pained her more than her disease. So I pretended to be blind. She was a very good wife. I only wanted to keep her happy. Moral:- *Some times it is good for us to act blind and ignore one another's short comings, in order to be happy* That Man is You Week 17 A Dialogue With God St. Joseph is a master and model of prayer. Please join us this Tuesday as we begin our Lenten journey by learning from his example, and that of St. John Bosco. Gift Presentation: Would you consider carrying up the offertory gifts at Mass with your family, your spouse, or even by yourself? Berns following 7:00 pm Stations) Bread and Broth Suppers: Lent begins on Ash Wednesday March 1, 2017, and will again feature the Bread and Broth suppers after the 5:30 pm Masses each Wednesday during Lent. Lenten Regulations: Catholics who have celebrated their 14th birthday are to abstain, except those with medical conditions, from meat on Ash Wednesday, all Fridays during Lent and Good Friday. In addition to abstaining from meat, Catholics who have celebrated their 18th birthday, until they celebrate their 59th birthday, are to fast, except those with medical conditions, on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Those bound by this regulation may eat only one full meal a day. Two smaller meals are permitted, if necessary, to maintain strength according to one s needs, but eating solid foods between is not permitted. Bread & Broth Wednesdays in Lent One of our beautiful traditions at Our Lady of Peace is that during Lent we gather after the 5:30 Mass each Wednesday to share a simple meal of homemade soups, bread, cheese, and beverages. To be able to do this we need volunteers: to make soups and breads, to set up, serve, or clean up Sign-up sheets for each week are available at the hospitality desk in the church entrance. CCS has a very active Honors Band program, with over half of the band enrolled in this challenging and fulfilling option. The honors band musicians are required to take the entire normal band course load, plus they have two added aspects. The first is a performance aspect, where each student must perform either a Class A solo or two Class A small ensembles at the Solo/ Ensemble contest. The second is a service aspect. Students learn to give back to the Columbus community by assisting with the summer Beat Camp program. Due to the individualized nature of Beat Camp, the new incoming band students receive one on one attention which allows them to gain a wonderful grasp of the beginning fundamentals of music. We ask the Holy Spirit to accompany us on this journey of encounter as we spend these 40 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday, and CRS Rice Bowl has resources for each one. Pick up your Rice Bowls at the Church entrances this weekend. You can follow along through the days of Lent with the enclosed calendar. An announcement will be in the bulletin about when to return the boxes to Church at the end of the Lenten season. Looking for enhancement of your faith?
