1 Saint of the Week Our Lady of the Rosary This feast was instituted following the Christian victory over the Turks at the battle of Lepanto, on October 7, 1571, which occurred while the Confraternity of the Rosary was celebrating a solemn procession in the streets of Rome. Pope Pius V attributed the victory to the intercession of the Virgin, Mary, succor of Christians, for which reason the feast was celebrated for many years with the name Our Lady of the Victory. The image of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary presents Mary and the Child, who is giving the rosary to Saint Dominic or other saints. 2 2 Welcome to Our Lady of Peace Parish Marshfield From Our Pastor The Church has long dedicated the month of October to Our Lady of the Rosary. This is commonly known among Catholics, but the history behind this is not so wellknown. The battle of Lepanto October 7, 1571 has been called the most important naval battle ever fought. Commanded by 24-year-old John of Austria, the Holy League was comprised of Catholics mostly from Venice and Spain. That infamous day, they headed into battle with a large crucifix displayed over the bow of the flagship, facing the larger fleet of the Ottoman Empire. It was Christianity versus Islam, and the Holy League's victory saved the Christian West. John of Austria ordered all of his men to join him kneeling on the decks of their ships the night before the battle to pray the rosary together. Back in Rome, Pope Pius V asked Catholics all over Rome and throughout Italy to fill the churches and pray the rosary for this decisive battle. Our Blessed Mother was credited for the victory. Let's pray the rosary with particular devotion this October, beginning with the intention of renewed respect for human life at every stage. Today we observe Respect Life Sunday. God bless you all! Sacraments Baptism - Parents requesting to have a child baptized are invited to call Father Berns directly at He will assist with any baptism preparation and scheduling a date. Reconciliation - Celebrated on Saturdays from 4:45-5:15 pm and upon request. Communal Penance Services are held during Advent and Lent. First Eucharist and Confirmation- Ongoing catechesis is essential in the faith formation of the youth of Our Lady Peace Parish (OLP). Therefore, any child must be enrolled continually from the First Grade, in either Columbus Catholic Schools or OLP s Religious Education Programs, to receive either the Sacraments of First Eucharist or Confirmation. RCIA Christian Initiation of Adults- Anyone interested in joining the Catholic Church should contact Sister Virdean Meyer at Classes begin each Fall. Marriage- Knowing how important it is to marry in the Church, we are happy to see weddings take place in our parish. Father Berns looks forward to meeting with engaged couples to assist them in marriage preparation. As this preparation takes time, couples are asked to contact Fr. Berns 8-12 months before the wedding. Anointing of the Sick- If any parishioner is ill at home or going into the hospital and would like to receive the Anointing of the Sick, please contact Father Berns at A Mass of Healing with anointing is celebrated during the year. But what if these long held beliefs were all wrong? In this stunning, powerful, and ultimately persuasive book, Rodney Stark, one of the most highly regarded sociologists of religion and bestselling author of The Rise of Christianity argues that some of our most firmly held ideas about history, ideas that paint the Catholic Church in the least positive light are, in fact, fiction. Only Christ can lead us to the love of the Father in the Spirit and make us share in the life of the Holy Trinity (Pope Saint John Paul II, On Catechesis, 5). The RCIA program consists of classes to help us grow in the knowledge and practices of the Catholic faith so that we can come to a fuller understanding of Jesus Christ. Our RCIA classes are available for anyone who: - is considering full membership in the Catholic Faith Community whether unbaptized, or baptized in another faith tradition. - is an adult Catholic who needs to prepare for the sacrament of Confirmation - is an adult who wants to grow in knowledge of the faith and practices of the Catholic Church - is an adult willing to share his/her faith with others. If you know of someone who is hurting, please take a rose and take it to them. There will be a basket for donations, which will go to Birthright to support the unborn. GATES OF HEAVEN CEMETERY FALL CLEAN-UP Please remove any grave decorations you wish to keep by October 1st. Any items left after that date will be removed and discarded. It is the family s responsibility to maintain and straighten the headstones. Contact the monument service that may have installed it if you need assistance. The CCHS Drama Department will present our Fall Musical, Annie on Saturday and Sunday Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. The time for Saturday is 7:30 pm and Sunday s Show is at 1:00 pm. Ticket prices are $10.00 for ages and $6.00 for ages 1-17 and 66 and older. We will continue our popular Dinner Theater on Saturday, September 30.
