1 Saint of the Week Saint Evaristus Evaristus took the throne of Saint Peter from 97 to 105, succeeding Pope Clement I. Very little is known of him. According to tradition, he was born at Bethlehem or at Antioch in a Jewish family. Between the 1st and 2nd centuries, the period of his pontificate, the Roman Empire was ruled by Nerva and Trajan: the climate of peace toward Christians made it possible for work to be done on the organization of the Roman Church. Evaristus is credited with the division of Rome into twenty-five parishes and the designation of the seven deacons who from then on were to follow the pope and transcribe his homilies. According to legend, Evaristus died under Trajan. The name Evaristus is of Greek origin and means he that is welcome. ** Taken from Saints A Year in Faith and Art by Rosa Giorgi Please pray for the Church in our Diocese Heavenly Father, Bless your Church with an abundance of holy and zealous priests, deacons, brothers, and sisters. Give those you have called to the married state and those you have chosen to live as single persons in the world, the special graces that their lives require. Form us all in the likeness of your Son, so that in Him, with Him, and through Him, we may love you more deeply and serve you more faithfully, always and everywhere. With Mary we ask this through Christ our Lord. This week we pray especially for: Deacon Barry Saylor of St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Wisconsin Rapids Theology IV St. Francis de Sales Seminary Prayer Intention of the Week: That Christians, justified by faith, may seek deeper unity with fellow Christians of other denominations October 22, 2017 Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time
2 2 Welcome to Our Lady of Peace Parish Marshfield From Our Pastor Last weekend I attended the annual International Council Meeting of Retrouvaille. As I had mentioned to you the previous Sunday, they had some serious enough agenda items to address, that I thought I should be there, especially since the only other one that I had attended was in Madison in This year's conference was held in Niagara Falls, which, I discovered, is even more impressive than International Falls. At the conclusion of our conference on the first night, I walked across the street to the overlook to see Niagara Falls for the first time. My first thought was how big God is and how small we are. And yet God cares about you and me far more than He cares about the majesty of Niagara Falls. The Lord created Niagara Falls knowing that it would delight human beings. Only minutes before I looked at the falls for the first time, I and the other 500 people in attendance at the Retrouvaille conference had just listened to the keynote address by a remarkable Canadian priest, Father Thomas Rosica, the founder of the Canadian equivalent of EWTN and Relevant Radio. He spoke with beautiful passion about his personal friend Pope Francis and the Holy Father's warm vocabulary as he speaks of the Church evangelizing this generation by accompanying those who are lost and "in the peripheries." I smiled as Father Rosica continued, because I thought that Pope Francis would be pleased to see the good things going on at Our Lady of Peace Parish. As long as the water runs over those falls, the Church will be saving souls, and will do it most effectively by our love for the lost and by visible joy. God bless you all, Father Berns Our Lady of Peace will be hosting a Healing Mass on Fri., Nov. 3, 2017 Fr. Robert Thorn from Wausau will be joining us for this wonderful opportunity to receive the healing graces of God s compassion. Watch for more details in the Bulletin and on the Website. 3 Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 22, I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you. Psalm 32:8 **Parish Finances Fiscal Year July 1, 2017-June ** Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults The RCIA is about initiation into Jesus Christ. Only Christ can lead us to the love of the Father in the Spirit and make us share in the life of the Holy Trinity (Pope Saint John Paul II, On Catechesis, 5). The RCIA program consists of classes to help us grow in the knowledge and practices of the Catholic faith so that we can come to a fuller understanding of Jesus Christ. Our RCIA classes are available for anyone who: - is considering full membership in the Catholic Faith Community whether unbaptized, or baptized in another faith tradition - is an adult Catholic who needs to prepare for the sacrament of Confirmation - is an adult who wants to grow in knowledge of the faith and practices of the Catholic Church - is an adult willing to share his/her faith with others. RCIA This year s RCIA classes are set to begin. Meetings will be held in the conference room of our administration building starting at 6:30 pm. Adjustments of dates and times necessitated by people s schedules will be made as needed. To register for classes or for additional information please contact Sister Virdean Meyer at or virdeanmeyer@hotmail.com The Lord is King Over all the Earth By Seminarian Arturo Vigueras One of the main themes for today s mass readings is taken from the Psalm The Lord is King over all the Earth. In the first reading, we further hear an example of how Lord is the King of all. God tells King Cyrus I have called you though you knew me not. What God tells King Cyrus applies to all the rulers of the world, because it is ultimately by the permission of God that Governments rise and fall with no authority of their own; but rather, with the authority that is given to them from above (John 19:11 and Romans 13:1). The Lord raised King Cyrus to restore the Israelites from their exile, and to rebuild Jerusalem (Ezra 1:114). Throughout history, God has used foreign rulers (Governments) for the sake of His chosen people. For example, in the book of Exodus, we see how God uses Pharaoh by hardening his heart and refusing to let the chosen people go in order for God to reveal His might power (Exodus 6:1). Another example comes from 2 Maccabees 6:7-16, where we read that the invading armies were used by God to punish Israel for its transgression against God. At the time of Jesus, the Roman occupation was seen as a judgment against Israel s unfaithfulness. So, when Jesus tells the Pharisees repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar this is a deliberate reminder for the Israelites of how God uses foreign powers to punish Israel for its transgressions against God. when Jesus says, repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God. He is telling us to keep our allegiances straight and to remember that the Lord alone is our King and that His Kingdom is not of this world (John 18:36).Even though the Kingdom of God is not of this world, the kingdom of God begins here in His Church, which tells of His glory to all people. St. Paul tells us that we are Citizens of Heaven (Philippians 3:20) and that we are called to live as beloved children of God by working in faith, by laboring in love, and by living in enduring hope, (1Theselonians 1:1-5). "Marshfield Deanery Catholic Men's Group Week 7 Woman in Communion. Last Tuesday we learned about man in communion. Join us this week as we use the story of Ida and Isadore Straus to shed more light on the mystery of woman, and learn important scientific research about the impact of "adult" media on men's brain chemistry.
