Please advise one of the Sidespersons if you would like Communion brought to you in the pew. If necessary, you are welcome to sit for those parts of the liturgy when it is normal to stand. REFLECTION Today we gather together in the presence of God to give thanks for the holiness of our brothers and sisters in Christ who have gone before us in the faith. As the saints in heaven, they offer us encouragement through the examples of their lives. COLLECT OF THE DAY We praise you, heavenly Father, that you have knit together your chosen ones in the one communion and fellowship in the body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord: give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living that we may come to those inexpressible joys you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Saviour, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. FIRST READING A reading from the Book of the Prophet Daniel 7:1 3, In the first year of King Belshazzar of Babylon, Daniel had a dream and visions of his head as he lay in bed. Then he wrote down the dream: I, Daniel, saw in my vision by night the four winds of heaven stirring up the great sea, and four great beasts came up out of the sea, different from one another. As for me, Daniel, my spirit was troubled within me, and the visions of my head terrified me. I approached one of the attendants to ask him the truth concerning all this. So he said that he would disclose to me the interpretation of the matter: As for these four great beasts, four kings shall arise out of the earth. But the holy ones of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom for ever for ever and ever. A short silence is observed. Reader All For the Word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. PSALM 149 At the 7:45am Eucharist the Psalm is recited antiphonally, a long pause being observed at the colon. At the 9:00am Eucharist the following antiphon and setting of the Psalm is used. At the 11:00am Eucharist a Book of Common Prayer setting of the Psalm is sung by the Choir. 2

Response Chant: W.G. Alcock; 11am C.V. Stanford O praise the Lord, and sing to the Lord a new song: O praise him in the assembly of the faithful. Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: let the children of Zion be joyful in their king. Let them praise him in the dance: let them sing his praise with timbrel and with harp. For the Lord takes delight in his people: he adorns the meek with his salvation. Let his faithful ones exult in his glory: let them sing for joy upon their beds. Let the high praises of God be in their mouths: and a two-edged sword in their hands, To execute vengeance on the nations: and chastisement upon the peoples, To bind their kings in chains: and their nobles with fetters of iron, To visit upon them the judgement that is decreed: such honour belongs to all his faithful servants. Praise the Lord. Response SECOND READING A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians 1:11 23 In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; this is the pledge of our inheritance towards redemption as God s own people, to the praise of his glory. I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love towards all the saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated 3

him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. A short silence is observed. Reader All For the Word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. We now sing the Gradual Hymn: No 225i. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Please remain standing and turn to face the Gospel reader. Reader/All Cantor All Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Rejoice and be glad; your reward is great in heaven. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! GOSPEL READING LUKE 6:20 31 Deacon A reading from the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to St Luke. All Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus looked up at his disciples and said: Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets. But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets. But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again. Do to others as you would have them do to you. Deacon All For the Gospel of the Lord, Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 4

COMMUNION Baptised Christians from all traditions are welcome to receive Communion. All others are welcome to come forward to receive a blessing. Please move to the altar rail. You are advised to take any valuables with you to Communion to ensure their security. We also request that people not use the practice of intinction at Communion (the practice of dipping the consecrated bread into the consecrated wine) as it increases the possibility of transmitting infection. If you are concerned about use of the common cup, it is acceptable for you to receive Communion in one kind (i.e. the bread only). Gluten-free wafers are available upon request. COMMUNION MOTETS 9AM MOTET Verbum supernum prodiens, Nec Patris linquens dexteram, Ad opus suum exiens, Venit ad vitæ vesperam. Se nascens dedit socium, Convescens in edulium, Se regnans dat in præmium, Se moriens in pretium. O salutaris hostia, Quæ cæli pandis ostium, Bella premunt hostilia; The Heavenly Word going forth, yet not leaving the right hand of his Father, went forth to his allotted work, and arrived at the evening of His life. By being born, he gave himself to us as our companion; at the table, he gave himself as our food; reigning in glory he gives himself as our reward, dying he gave himself as our ransom; O Saving Victim, that opens the gate of heaven; hostile attacks oppress us, give us strength, bring us aid. Words: from Verbum supernum; St Thomas Aquinas ( ) Music: Josef Rheinberger( ) 11AM MOTET And I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and first earth had passed away, and there was no more sea. And I, John, saw the holy city, new Jerusalem coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband; and I heard a great voice out of heaven, saying: Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them and they shall be his people; and God himself shall be with them and be their God; and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes, and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain, for the former things are passed away. Words: Revelation 21:1 4 Music: Edgar Bainton ( ) ORGAN VOLUNTARY Johann Sebastian Bach ( ) Pièce d orgue und fuge in D, BWV 532 PRAYERS FOR HEALING The laying on of hands and anointing with prayers for healing, for yourself or on behalf of others, will be offered in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit after both the 9:00am and the 11:00am services. 5

NOTICES NATIONAL CHURCH LIFE SURVEY The 2016 National Church Life Survey will be conducted at St James Church up to Sunday 20 November. The survey is being conducted across the Anglican Church of Australia as well as in all other major denominations. The Survey was first conducted in 1991 and has taken place every five years since then. It provides a snapshot of a church at a particular time that can be used for planning, allocation of resources, and restructuring and prioritising of church activities. In this respect, it will be a vital source of information for review of our Parish s strategic plan. The survey forms will be distributed at the beginning of each service with the pew sheet. People are encouraged to stay at the end of the service and complete the form, which should take about 20 minutes, and then leave it in the box provided. Otherwise, it can be either returned next week or left at the Parish Office up to Monday 21 November. Anyone who is unable to be present over the next couple of weeks can receive a form by contacting the Parish Office on ST JAMES INSTITUTE Rector s Series: Documents of the Church How should we approach, read, interpret and understand these writings, and what status should they be given today? ACT FOR PEACE: CHRISTMAS BOWL We hear of so much suffering and injustice and often wonder what we can do to make a difference to those afflicted. A very positive move on offer is to become one of the team of Act for Peace Representatives at St James. For the most part this involves ensuring that Christmas Bowl envelopes are distributed to our fellow parishioners and also to visitors at the Advent services. Christmas Bowl is the annual appeal of Act for Peace and, over the last 66 years, gifts received have helped our partner churches throughout the world bring relief and help to people most in need. A Christmas Bowl Kit will be supplied to provide you with information, and more details are readily available on the website: Please let Howard Graham know of your interest on or howardtricia@optusnet.com.au.
