2 Please advise one of the Sidespersons if you would like Communion brought to you in the pew. If necessary, you are welcome to sit for those parts of the liturgy when it is normal to stand. COLLECT OF THE DAY Eternal God, at the baptism of Jesus in the river Jordan you proclaimed him your beloved Son, and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: grant that all who are baptised into his name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Saviour; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. FIRST READING A reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah 42:1 9 Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be crushed until he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his teaching. Thus says God, the Lord who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: I am the Lord, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. I am the Lord, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare before they spring forth, I tell you of them. A short silence is observed. Reader All For the Word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. PSALM 29 At the 7:45am Eucharist the Psalm is recited antiphonally, a long pause being observed at the colon. At the 10:00am Eucharist a Book of Common Prayer setting of the Psalm is sung by The St James Singers. Chant: C.H. Lloyd Ascribe to the Lord, you powers of heaven: ascribe to the Lord glory and might. 2

3 Ascribe to the Lord the honour due to his name: O worship the Lord in the beauty of his holiness. The voice of the Lord is upon the waters: the God of glory thunders, the Lord upon the great waters. The voice of the Lord is mighty in operation: the voice of the Lord is a glorious voice. The voice of the Lord breaks the cedar-trees: the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon. He makes them skip like a calf: Lebanon and Sirion like a young wild ox. The voice of the Lord divides the lightning-flash: the voice of the Lord whirls the sands of the desert, the Lord whirls the desert of Kadesh. The voice of the Lord rends the terebinth trees, and strips bare the forests: in his temple all cry Glory. The Lord sits enthroned above the water-flood: the Lord sits enthroned as a king for ever. The Lord will give strength to his people: the Lord will give to his people the blessing of peace. SECOND READING A reading from the book of the Acts of the Apostles 10:34 43 Then Peter began to speak to them: I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name. A short silence is observed. Reader All For the Word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. 3

4 We now sing the Gradual Hymn, No. 58. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Please remain standing and turn to face the Gospel reader. Reader/All Cantor All Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! The heavens were opened and the Father s voice was heard: this is my beloved Son, hear him. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! GOSPEL READING MATTHEW 3:13 17 Deacon A reading from the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to St Matthew. All Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptised by him. John would have prevented him, saying, I need to be baptised by you, and do you come to me? But Jesus answered him, Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfil all righteousness. Then he consented. And when Jesus had been baptised, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased. Deacon All For the Gospel of the Lord, Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. RENEWAL OF BAPTISMAL VOWS Following the sermon we will renew our Baptismal Vows. Please see the separate sheet. COMMUNION Baptised Christians from all traditions are welcome to receive Communion. All others are welcome to come forward to receive a blessing. Please move to the altar rail. You are advised to take any valuables with you to Communion to ensure their security. We also request that people not use the practice of intinction at Communion (the practice of dipping the consecrated bread into the consecrated wine) as it increases the possibility of transmitting infection. If you are concerned about use of the common cup, it is acceptable for you to receive Communion in one kind (i.e. the bread only). Gluten-free wafers are available upon request. COMMUNION MOTET 10AM MOTET Listen sweet dove unto my song, And spread thy golden wings in me; Hatching my tender heart so long, Till it get wing and flie away with thee. 4

5 Such glorious gifts thou didst bestow The earth did like a heav n appeare, The starres were coming down to know If they might mend their wages and serve here. The sunne which once did shine alone, Hung down his head and wisht for night, When he beheld twelve sunnes for one Going about the world and giving light. Lord though we change thou art the same, The same sweet God of love and light: Restore this day for thy great name, Unto his ancient and miraculous right. Words: George Herbert ( ) Music: Grayston Ives (b. 1948) ORGAN VOLUNTARY Johann Sebastian Bach ( ) Christ unser Herr zum Jordan kam, BWV 684 PRAYERS FOR HEALING The laying on of hands and anointing with prayers for healing, for yourself or on behalf of others, will be offered in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit after the 10:00am service. In response to a request from the Sydney Archbishop to parishes to support a Syrian refugee family, St James has decided to become involved. This will mean we will supply about $15,000, help to find housing, give support, as well as provide household goods and food in preparation for the refugees arrival. When we consider what we see happening in Syria our contribution is only a small one, but from small things big things grow. Some people have made contributions already and, if 100 or more people could give $50 each, we would be well on our way to reaching our target. If you can help, please make your contribution, marked Syrian COMING EVENTS AT ST JAMES AND OTHER IMPORTANT ITEMS Refugees Fund, either directly into the church account (BSB , A/C , Acc. Name: Churchwardens St James General Account, Reference: Syrian Refugees Fund) or send a cheque to the Parish Office or put the money /cheque into an envelope, labelled Syrian Refugees Fund, in the offering plate. Thank you for your ongoing support. NAME TAGS During January, there are usually many visitors to St James, who sometimes join us for services and refreshments. It would be helpful for them (and for those of us who are name-challenged!) if we could wear our nametags. If you need a new one, or do not own one and would like one, please contact Dianne at the Parish Office on JARDIN ST JAMES Re-opens on Monday 16 January. SAVE THE DATE FOR GERALDINE DOOGUE A Big Event Fundraiser for St Laurence House will be held on Thursday 23 February 2017, 6.30pm, at St Paul s College, Sydney University. Join us for an address by Geraldine Doogue, ABC broadcaster and presenter, cocktails and more. Tickets and more details soon.
