THE SEASON OF ADVENT Today marks the beginning of the church s year. Advent is also the four-week period of preparation for Christmas. At one time, Christians observed Advent with fasting but this practice is no longer formally required. Nonetheless, Advent has a more solemn character with this marked by the use of the colour purple and by the omission of the Gloria at the Eucharist. You will also notice that there are some different prayers used in the services. During Advent we focus not only on the coming of the Christ child at Bethlehem but also on the Second Coming of Christ as Judge at the Last Day. In this way, Advent invites us to give thanks for what God has accomplished, and to ponder the fulfilment of God s promises in the future. FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT LITURGY Advent Prose: Sung by the Choir at 11:00 am only. Entrance Hymn and Lighting of the Advent Candle: Hymn No. 11 O come, O come Emmanuel (verses 1 and 2) The first candle will be lit. It is called the Prophets Candle to remind us of the Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah. Celebrant Today we begin the season of Advent by lighting the first of five candles in our Advent wreath. This candle we shall name the Prophets Candle. From ancient and modern prophets we hear about the coming of a Saviour. Sometimes prophetic words are hard to believe. We are uncertain of their truth. We must wait and be patient. In honour of all the prophets we light this candle. The first candle is lit. All Lord Jesus, you are the light of the world. Come that we may have life in its fullness. Let your light shine forth in our lives. Amen. FIRST READING A reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah 2:1 5 The word that Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. In days to come the mountain of the Lord s house shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be raised above the hills; all the nations shall stream to it. Many peoples shall come and say, Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths. For out of Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. He shall judge between the nations, and shall arbitrate for many peoples; they shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning-hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. PSALM 122 At the 7:45am Eucharist the Psalm is recited antiphonally, a long pause being observed at the colon. At the 9:00am Eucharist the following antiphon and setting of the Psalm is used. At the 11:00am Eucharist a Book of Common Prayer setting of the Psalm is sung by the Choir. Response Chant: 9am: tone VIII.i; 11am: tone IV.vi I was glad when they said to me: Let us go to the house of the Lord. And now our feet are standing: within your gates, O Jerusalem; 3

4 Jerusalem which is built as a city: where the pilgrims gather in unity. There the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord: as he commanded Israel, to give thanks to the name of the Lord. There are set thrones of judgement: the thrones of the house of David. O pray for the peace of Jerusalem: may those who love you prosper. Peace be within your walls: and prosperity in your palaces. Response SECOND READING A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans 13:9 14 The commandments, You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not covet ; and any other commandment, are summed up in this word, Love your neighbour as yourself. Love does no wrong to a neighbour; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law. Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armour of light; let us live honourably as in the day, not in revelling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarrelling and jealousy. For as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, and they knew nothing until the flood came and swept them all away, so too will be the coming of the Son of Man. Then two will be in the field; one will be taken and one will be left. Two women will be grinding meal together; one will be taken and one will be left. COMMUNION Baptised Christians from all traditions are welcome to receive Communion. All others are welcome to come forward to receive a blessing. Please move to the altar rail. You are advised to take any valuables with you to Communion to ensure their security. We also request that people not use the practice of intinction at Communion (the practice of dipping the consecrated bread into the consecrated wine) as it increases the possibility of transmitting infection. If you are concerned about use of the common cup, it is acceptable for you to receive Communion in one kind (i.e. the bread only). Gluten-free wafers are available upon request. 8 NOTICES ST JAMES INSTITUTE Advent Study Groups This year s series of four studies, Living in the Light, has been published by York Courses and contains a mixture of readings, reflections and discussion questions. As usual, there is a CD containing audio comments by contributors, to spur on discussion and promote reflection as we prepare for the coming of the Lord at Christmas and look forward to his coming again. All are welcome to join either the group meeting on Mondays, 10am to noon at Clergy House, Chatswood, led by Fr John Stewart, or the group meeting on Tuesdays, 1:00pm to 2:00pm in St James Hall (Level 1, Phillip Street, Sydney) led by Fr Andrew Sempell. Groups last for four weeks and begin on Monday 28 November. Cost: (for booklet and light refreshments) $10. Booklets available (for group participants only) at the door or in the Baptistry after the service today. If you can help, please contact Mary Sattin on or her at msattin@wmlaw.com.au COMING EVENTS AT ST JAMES AND OTHER IMPORTANT ITEMS THE ANNUAL SISTER FREDA MISSION CHRISTMAS LUNCH will be served in the crypt on Sunday 11 December at 1:00pm. The Annual Christmas Lunch is a very special time for the Mission. It is an event which is eagerly looked forward to not only by our regular guests but also by their friends and many others. We expect to cater for approx. 150 people on the day. We serve turkey, ham, salads, Christmas pudding and custard. Ice creams are a special treat. We will again be entertained by the a cappella group Voices from the Waters who continue to voluntarily provide their time to add that extra atmosphere. If you are able to help on the day we do need volunteers to help prepare and serve the meals, and set up the tables and chairs from 8:30am to about 3:00pm. It would also be appreciated if you could consider making a donation, however small. Donations by cheque can be made out to the Sister Freda Mission and are tax deductible. If you require any further information please contact David or Robyn Carver on ACT FOR PEACE: CHRISTMAS BOWL We hear of so much suffering and injustice and often wonder what we can do to make a difference to those afflicted. Christmas Bowl is the annual appeal of Act for Peace and, over the last 66 years, gifts received have helped our partner churches throughout the world bring relief and help to people most in need. Christmas Bowl envelopes will be distributed at Advent services by the team of Act of Peace Representatives at St James. See for more information. 8

9 NOTICES cont. FEAST OF NICHOLAS FERRAR The Sydney College of the Oratory of the Good Shepherd invites you to share in the annual celebration of the Feast of Nicholas Ferrar of Little Gidding. Nicholas and his extended family lived a life of prayer as a community in a remote parish in England in the early 17th century. A sung Eucharist will take place COMING EVENTS AT ST JAMES AND OTHER IMPORTANT ITEMS at 6:00pm on Monday 5 December at Christ Church St Laurence, Railway Square, Sydney. Both front and back covers are pictured in a poster on the noticeboard in the entrance to the Crypt. Following both the 9am and 11am Eucharists, Fr John will be available in the library in the Crypt to sign purchased copies of his book during refreshments. Price: $25. All proceeds from the sale of Fr John s book will go to St Laurence House, the charity supported by both St James Church and Christ Church St Laurence, which provides care, support and accommodation for homeless young people in Sydney. 9
