REFLECTION On this Trinity Sunday, we celebrate the many ways that God continues his lifegiving work among us. We rejoice in the gift of living each day in relationship with God as Christ s disciples formed in the Creator s image and empowered by the Spirit and we commit ourselves to caring for what God has made. COLLECT OF THE DAY O blessed Trinity, in whom we know the Maker of all things, seen and unseen, the Saviour of all, both near and far: by your Spirit enable us so to worship your divine majesty, that with all the company of heaven we may magnify your glorious name, saying, Holy, holy, holy. Glory to you, O Lord most high. Amen. FIRST READING A reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah 6: 1 8 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. And one called to another and said: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory. The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. And I said: Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts! Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out. 4 SECOND READING A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans 8: So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, Abba! Father! it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. There was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night and said to him, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God. Jesus answered him, Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above. Nicodemus said to him, How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother s womb and be born? Jesus answered, Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be astonished that I said to you, You must be born from above. The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit. Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. COMMUNION Baptised Christians from all traditions are welcome to receive Communion. All others are welcome to come forward to receive a blessing. Please move to the altar rail. You are advised to take any valuables with you to Communion to ensure their security. We also request that people not use the practice of intinction at Communion (the practice of dipping the consecrated bread into the consecrated wine) as it increases the possibility of transmitting infection. If you are concerned about use of the common cup, it is acceptable for you to receive Communion in one kind (i.e. the bread only). Gluten-free wafers are available upon request. 8 NOTICES OUR PREACHER THIS MORNING Today we welcome back the Revd Elaine Farmer and her husband Bill and we wish them well on their upcoming trip to the UK. Next Sunday 3 June at 3:00pm Mthr Elaine will preach at Evensong at Westminster Abbey. LUNCHTIME LECTIO DIVINA On Thursdays in May from 1:00pm to 2:00pm we are offering Lectio Divina in the Children s Chapel in the Crypt. Lectio Divina, which is Latin for sacred reading, is a centuries-old tradition of slow, reflective reading of scripture. Our sessions are led by Ann Bergman and Penny Sturrock who are Benedictine Oblates of the Australian Christian Meditation Community. Lectio Divina is open to all and free to attend. The final session will be held this coming Thursday 31 May. ST JAMES MENS GROUP The next meeting will be held on Saturday 2 June at 12 noon at 16 Macleay Avenue, Wahroonga. The speaker will be Dr Raymond Nobbs. Ray is the chair of a committee of Council established to consider and develop a proposal for a St James' church history as part of our bicentenary celebrations. Please RSVP to David Cheetham on COMMEMORATION OF BISHOP HEBER A Commemoration of Bishop Reginald Heber will be held at St James' Church on Sunday 3 June commencing at 4pm. The music will be led by the St James' Singers, under the direction of Alistair Nelson. COMING EVENTS AT ST JAMES AND OTHER IMPORTANT ITEMS From 1814 to 1836, the Anglican Church in Australia came under the jurisdiction of the Diocese of Calcutta, of which Bishop Heber was the second bishop. Heber was a scholar, but is principally known for his hymn writing. His hymns will feature in the service. THE PILGRIM COURSE: THE CREEDS This four-week study and discussion series will begin in the week commencing Monday 4 June. The groups are: Mondays 10:00am-12noon, (not meeting on 11 June) Clergy House, Chatswood with Sue Mackenzie; Tuesdays 1:00pm-2:00pm, St James Hall with Christopher Waterhouse; Wednesdays 7:15pm-8:30pm, St James Hall with Christopher Waterhouse; Thursdays 6:00pm-8:00pm, Pyrmont with Ross and Libby Hindmarsh; Thursdays 7:00pm-8:30pm, Homebush with Kumar Rasiah. BACH CANTATA SERIES The next in our series of Bach Cantatas is coming up on Sunday 10 June at 4:00pm in St James Church, King Street. This will be presented by The Choir of St James within a Lutheran liturgical context. The planned cantata will be replaced by Cantata 68, Also hat Gott die Welt geliebt. This is a cantata for the Monday after Pentecost, a day which is not usually celebrated in the Anglican Church, but it is a public holiday in many European Countries, including Germany where it is a Holy Day of Obligation for Roman Catholics. Bach s Cantata reuses musical material from his Hunting Cantata. It includes well-known aria Mein gläubiges Herze which is described by John Eliot Gardiner as surely one of Bach s most refreshing and unbuttoned expressions of melodic joy and high spirits. The cantata will be accompanied by organ with cello solo and continuo. All are welcome. ORDINANCE NOTICE Notice is hereby given that the Parish Council of the Parish of St James intends to apply to the Standing Committee of the Synod of the Diocese of Sydney to vary the ordinance to authorise a mortgage, increasing the borrowing limit from $13,000,000 to $17,000,000, to be applied towards the purchase of additional property nearby to St James Hall. A copy of the Ordinance can be found in the Baptistry. Further details regarding it and its purposes can be raised with either the Churchwardens, the Clergy or Mr James Balfour (Secretary of the St James Hall Board of Management). Any objections to the proposed Ordinance may be presented to the Secretary of the Standing Committee before 12 June. 9

10 HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED? Week after week there are many services of worship held at St James Church, King Street. Not only are there three Sunday services, or four once or twice a month, there are also Eucharists celebrated on each weekday at lunchtime, and Choral Evensong on Wednesday evenings. All these services involve numerous people who are paid for their work, as well as the many volunteers we are blessed with at St James. Our Easter preacher this year, Canon Dr Emma Percy, from Oxford University, commented on the impressive teamwork she saw in action here. However, all this takes not only much effort, but also quite a bit of money. The Rector made the comment at the Annual General Meeting in March that on average 419 people attend a church service each week at St James and give $10 each. But $20 each is needed! And that is just to fund services. Please help! 10
