REFLECTION We, the disciples of Jesus, are gathered here in his name. We are doing what he asked his disciples to do: to wait in prayer for the coming of the Holy Spirit. Without the Spirit, the apostles were like a sailing boat without wind. If they needed the Spirit, how much more do we today, so that we may become the people that God wants us to be. COLLECT OF THE DAY Almighty God, your blessed Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, ascended far above all heavens that he might fill all things: mercifully give us faith to trust that, as he promised, he abides with us on earth until the end of time; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen. FIRST READING A reading from the Acts of the Apostles 1: 15 17, In those days Peter stood up among the believers (together the crowd numbered about one hundred and twenty people) and said, Friends, the scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit through David foretold concerning Judas, who became a guide for those who arrested Jesus for he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry. So one of the men who have accompanied us throughout the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us one of these must become a witness with us to his resurrection. So they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias. Then they prayed and said, Lord, you know everyone s heart. Show us which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place. And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles. A short silence is observed. Reader All For the Word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. 2

3 PSALM 1 At the 7:45am Eucharist the Psalm is recited antiphonally, a long pause being observed at the colon. At the 9:00am Eucharist the following antiphon and setting of the Psalm is used. At the 11:00am Eucharist a Book of Common Prayer setting of the Psalm is sung by the choir. Response Chant: J. Goss Blessed are they who have not walked in the counsel of the ungodly: nor followed the way of sinners, nor taken their seat amongst the scornful. But their delight is in the law of the Lord: and on that law will they ponder day and night. They are like trees planted beside streams of water: that yield their fruit in due season. Response SECOND READING A reading from the First Letter of John 5: 9 13 If we receive human testimony, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the testimony of God that he has testified to his Son. Those who believe in the Son of God have the testimony in their hearts. Those who do not believe in God have made him a liar by not believing in the testimony that God has given concerning his Son. And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life. A short silence is observed. GOSPEL READING JOHN 17: 6 19 Deacon A reading from the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to St John. All Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus looked up to heaven and prayed Father, I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one. While I was with them, I protected them in your name that you have given me. I guarded them, and not one of them was lost except the one destined to be lost, so that the scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you, and I speak these things in the world so that they may have my joy made complete in themselves. I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but I ask you to protect them from the evil one. They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. COMMUNION Baptised Christians from all traditions are welcome to receive Communion. All others are welcome to come forward to receive a blessing. Please move to the altar rail. You are advised to take any valuables with you to Communion to ensure their security. We also request that people not use the practice of intinction at Communion (the practice of dipping the consecrated bread into the consecrated wine) as it increases the possibility of transmitting infection. If you are concerned about use of the common cup, it is acceptable for you to receive Communion in one kind (i.e. the bread only). Gluten-free wafers are available upon request. 4

7 NOTICES LUNCHTIME LECTIO DIVINA On Thursdays in May from 1:00pm to 2:00pm we will be offering Lectio Divina in the Meditation Room in the Crypt. Lectio Divina, which is Latin for sacred reading, is a centuries-old tradition of slow, reflective reading of scripture. Our sessions will be led by Ann Bergman and Penny Sturrock who are Benedictine Oblates of the Australian Christian Meditation Community. Lectio Divina is open to all and free to attend. Sessions will be held on Thursday 17, 24 and 31 May. ST JAMES EATS The next St James Eats will be on Friday 18 May at 6:30pm for 7:00pm. The venue is Choyan Restaurant (Chinese) at 9-11 St John s Avenue, Gordon. Gordon Station is a 3 minute walk away and there is plenty of parking beside the station, and some street parking in St John s Avenue. The restaurant is upstairs; however, there is a chair-lift. Tickets are $50/45, obtainable by calling the City Recital Hall on or go to FRIENDS OF MUSIC The Annual General Meeting of the Friends of Music at St James will be held on Sunday 20 May at 12:30pm, beginning with refreshments, in St James Hall, Level 1, Phillip Street, Sydney. This will follow the 10:00am Jazz Eucharist for Pentecost. Office Bearers and Committee Members for 2018 will be elected at this meeting and the financial statements for 2017 will be received. THE RESTORATION PROJECT This group, to which all are invited, aims to practise the disciplines of spiritual transformation, both historic and contemporary in Christian community, and meets fortnightly on Tuesday evenings at 6:30pm. WORLD COUNCIL OF CHURCHES You are invited to a dinner on Wednesday 16 May at 6:00pm at Zest Restaurant, First Floor balcony area, City Tattersalls, Pitt Street, Sydney. The dinner is being held in honour of the visit to Sydney of Rev Dr Sang Chang, the World Council of Churches President (Asia), a Presbyterian Minister from Korea. Bookings limited so book by 21 May at More details: or call Kate on HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED? Week after week there are many services of worship held at St James Church, King Street. Not only are there three Sunday services, or four once or twice a month, there are also Eucharists celebrated on each weekday at lunchtime, and Choral Evensong on Wednesday evenings. All these services involve numerous people who are paid for their work, as well as the many volunteers we are blessed with at St James. Our Easter preacher this year, Canon Dr Emma Percy, from Oxford University, commented on the impressive teamwork she saw in action here. However, all this takes not only much effort, but also quite a bit of money. The Rector made the comment at the Annual General Meeting in March that on average 419 people attend a church service each week at St James and give $10 each. But $20 each is needed! And that is just to fund services. Please help! 8
