REFLECTION The feast of Christ the King brings to an end the Church s worshipping year. When we think of a king, many may think of someone who takes advantage of the authority he or she has over others. However, Christ is not like that, for he came to be a loving shepherd to his people. We too are called to be shepherd leaders, because God s tender care is at work through us, as we find Christ in one another. COLLECT OF THE DAY God of power and love, who raised your Son Jesus from death to life, resplendent in glory to rule over all creation: free the world to rejoice in his peace, to glory in his justice, and to live in his love. Unite the human race in Jesus Christ your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. FIRST READING A reading from the book of the prophet Ezekiel 34: 11 16, For thus says the Lord God: I myself will search for my sheep, and will seek them out. As shepherds seek out their flocks when they are among their scattered sheep, so I will seek out my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places to which they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness. I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their own land; and I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the watercourses, and in all the inhabited parts of the land. I will feed them with good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel shall be their pasture; there they shall lie down in good grazing land, and they shall feed on rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I will make them lie down, says the Lord God. You are advised to take any valuables with you to Communion to ensure their security. We also request that people not use the practice of intinction at Communion (the practice of dipping the consecrated bread into the consecrated wine) as it increases the possibility of transmitting infection. If you are concerned about use of the common cup, it is acceptable for you to receive Communion in one kind (i.e. the bread only). Gluten-free wafers are available upon request. 7 NOTICES ST JAMES INSTITUTE Twenty-Minute Talk: TODAY 26 November, there will be a free Twenty Minute Talk about the Gospel of Mark, as we prepare for Year B in the lectionary (which begins on Advent Sunday). What is the essence of Mark s Gospel? What sets it apart from the other Gospel accounts? Copies of Rowan William s book Meeting God in Mark will be available for $15. The talk is free to attend and will be presented in the Meditation Room after each of the Sunday morning services. Rector s Series: Theology and Mission Join Fr Andrew Sempell for the last study in the series on Thursday 30 November, from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. A light meal (e.g. quiche, salad, bread and fruit) will be served. Cost (includes meal and notes on the series): $20 per session. Registration is essential due to catering requirements, either registrations@sjks.org.au or phone Advent Study Group Series: Church and Kingdom As we have done earlier in the year, we are using the Pilgrim Course materials for this series. The series is called, Church and Kingdom and focuses on a good variety of topics. However, there are six studies in the series, but we will only be completing four of them in groups, since Advent is only four weeks long. Each group will be studying the four studies of their choice. The remaining two studies, members can complete at home. Sessions will start this week commencing Monday 27 November and run for four weeks. Each year, our Parish commissions Act for Peace Representatives to help raise awareness and to assist with the distribution of Christmas Bowl envelopes to fellow parishioners and visitors during Advent. Thank you, Howard Graham CONGRATULATIONS TO ANAHERA CHESSUM Congratulations to Anahera, one of St James Servers, who has achieved a Volunteer s Award because of the amount of hours she has given to St James over a particularly short period of time. She was meant to donate her time at a rate of 80 hours over a two-year period, but Anahera has volunteered at St James for 220 hours over 15 months. The award will be presented at Parliament House in Macquarie Street, Sydney, on 5 December. KIDS@CHURCH As usual, the children of St James will be presenting their Christmas Pageant at the 9am service on Sunday 17 December, a week earlier than usual due to the timing of Christmas this year. The children are greatly encouraged by the support of the congregation, so they would love to see you there. 8 Please note that there will be no meeting of Kids@Church in the morning on Christmas Eve due to the Christingle service being held at 6:00pm that evening. After Christmas, Kids@Church will meet each Sunday in conjunction with the 10am services until February. NEW WORSHIP GROUP: THE RESTORATION PROJECT Come and join us. We are a small group trialling a different way of gathering as Christians. We aim to practise the disciplines of spiritual transformation both historic and contemporary in Christian community. We will be meeting on the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month, for a trial period of six months at 6:30pm in the crypt. (Feel free to arrive from 6:00pm). We will have a focus on listening to God in our practices. As such, we aim to be more of a spiritual gymnasium than a classroom, as we seek, under God, to restore ourselves, our relationships, and our world. In 1913 the Anglican Oratory of the Good Shepherd, meeting at Little Gidding, chose Nicholas as their patron. The Sydney Oratory will keep his annual feast with a Eucharist in Christ Church St Laurence on Monday, 4 December at 6:00pm. You would be most welcome to attend the Eucharist, which will be followed by supper and an address in the hall. The speaker this year will be the Reverend Dr Daniel Dries, Rector of Christ Church St Laurence.
