REFLECTION Words have the power to name and shape people in ways that may lead to good or ill, to acceptance or rebuke. Who we say Jesus is shapes our journey as disciples. Wise followers therefore listen for the words and ways of God in their midst; for God s words and ways lead to a deeper understanding of who we are called to be because of whom we choose to follow. COLLECT OF THE DAY God of mercy, help us to forgive as you have forgiven us, to trust you, even when hope is failing, and to take up our cross daily and follow you in your redeeming work; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. FIRST READING A reading from the Book of Proverbs 1: Wisdom cries out in the street; in the squares she raises her voice. At the busiest corner she cries out; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks: How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge? Give heed to my reproof; I will pour out my thoughts to you; I will make my words known to you. Because I have called and you refused, have stretched out my hand and no one heeded, and because you have ignored all my counsel and would have none of my reproof, I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when panic strikes you, when panic strikes you like a storm, and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you. Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently, but will not find me. Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the Lord, would have none of my counsel, and despised all my reproof, therefore they shall eat the fruit of their way and be sated with their own devices. For waywardness kills the simple, and the complacency of fools destroys them; but those who listen to me will be secure and will live at ease, without dread of disaster. A short silence is observed. Reader For the Word of the Lord, All Thanks be to God. 2

3 PSALM 19 At the 7:45am Eucharist the Psalm is recited antiphonally, a long pause being observed at the colon. At the 11:00am Eucharist a Book of Common Prayer setting of the Psalm is sung by the Choir. Chant: I. A. Atkins The heavens declare the glory of God: and the firmament proclaims his handiwork; One day tells it to another: and night to night communicates knowledge. There is no speech or language: nor are their voices heard; Yet their sound has gone out through all the world: and their words to the ends of the earth. There he has pitched a tent for the sun: which comes out as a bridegroom from his chamber, and rejoices like a strong man to run his course. Its rising is at one end of the heavens, and its circuit to their farthest bound: and nothing is hidden from its heat. The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul: the command of the Lord is true, and makes wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, and rejoice the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, and gives light to the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean, and endures for ever: the judgements of the Lord are unchanging, and righteous every one. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold: sweeter also than honey, than the honey that drips from the comb. Moreover, by them is your servant taught: and in keeping them there is great reward. Who can know their own unwitting sins?: O cleanse me from my secret faults. Keep your servant also from presumptuous sins, lest they get the mastery over me: so I shall be clean, and innocent of great offence. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight: O Lord, my strength and my redeemer. 3

4 SECOND READING A reading from the Letter of James 2: But someone will say, You have faith and I have works. Show me your faith without works, and I by my works will show you my faith. You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe and shudder. Do you want to be shown, you senseless person, that faith without works is barren? Was not our ancestor Abraham justified by works when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was brought to completion by the works. Thus the scripture was fulfilled that says, Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness, and he was called the friend of God. You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. Likewise, was not Rahab the prostitute also justified by works when she welcomed the messengers and sent them out by another road? For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is also dead. A short silence is observed. Reader For the Word of the Lord, All Thanks be to God. We sing the hymn No. 76. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Please remain standing and turn to face the Gospel reader. Reader/All Cantor All Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! My only glory is the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, which crucifies the world to me and me to the world. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! GOSPEL READING MARK 8: Deacon A reading from the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to St Mark. All Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, Who do people say that I am? And they answered him, John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets. Jesus asked them, But who do you say that I am? Peter answered him, You are the Messiah. And he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him. Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things. 4

5 He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. Deacon All For the Gospel of the Lord, Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. COMMUNION Baptised Christians from all traditions are welcome to receive Communion. All others are welcome to come forward to receive a blessing. Please move to the altar rail. You are advised to take any valuables with you to Communion to ensure their security. We also request that people not use the practice of intinction at Communion (the practice of dipping the consecrated bread into the consecrated wine) as it increases the possibility of transmitting infection. If you are concerned about use of the common cup, it is acceptable for you to receive Communion in one kind (i.e. the bread only). Gluten-free wafers are available upon request. COMMUNION MOTET 11AM MOTET View me, Lord, a work of thine; Shall I lie drown d in night? Might thy grace in me but shine, I should seem made all of light. Cleanse me, Lord, that I may kneel At thine altar, pure and white; They that once thy mercies feel, Gaze no more on earth s delight. Worldly joys, like shadows, fade When the heav nly light appears; But the cov nants thou hast made, Endless, know nor days, nor years. In thy word, Lord, is my trust, To thy mercies fast I fly; Though I am but clay and dust, Yet thy grace can lift me high. Words: Thomas Campion ( ) Music: Richard H. Lloyd (b.1933) ORGAN VOLUNTARY William Mathias ( ) Postlude 5

10 Equal Voices is a national, cross-denominational movement of straight and LGBTIQ+ Christians who mourn the silencing and rejection of Christians who are LGBTIQ+ by our churches. We are committed to the cultivation of church cultures in which LGBTIQ+ people are welcomed and accepted on the same basis as anyone whose sexuality is straight. The movement was born at a service of apology and reconciliation held at St James Church, King Street, in February 2017, with a National Apology to LGBTIQ+ fellow Australians launched on that day, an apology which inspired a number of others, including an apology taken to the Anglican General Synod in November of last year. There are currently five Equal Voices branches, with two each in NSW and Queensland, and a fifth in Melbourne. The Melbourne branch has taken the lead in organising our second National Symposium. Branches are in the process of being set up in Canberra and Perth, with more in the offing. Equal Voices also has a number of very active, national taskforces, including one dubbed Anglican Voices, which is open to new members. There is also a very active Public Advocacy taskforce, which has recently partnered with Brave Network and other organisations to produce an important document on Sexual Orientation Change Efforts (sometimes referred to as Gay Conversion therapy) ( ), which document we would urge you to prayerfully consider and act upon. 11 AN EXPLANATION FROM RICHARD COGSWELL I have been a member of the (Ignatian) Christian Life Community (CLC) for some 30 years. CLC is putting on what are called Taster Days for those that might be interested in undertaking the Ignatian retreat in daily life next year. See part of the leaflet below. When we were given the leaflet at the last CLC meeting I attended, I wondered if any St James parishioners might be interested. I asked about whether a participant in the Taster Days needed to be a member of CLC. The response from Iain Radvan SJ was Yes but they need to know that if they do not know anything about Ignatian spirituality; they might be a bit bewildered. He added: but if they surrendered themselves to the prayer, they would still be graced! Some of you may be interested in the Taster Days. Feel free to contact me if you are (richardcogswell@hotmail.com or ). 11
