Please advise one of the Sidespersons if you would like Communion brought to you in the pew. If necessary, you are welcome to sit for those parts of the liturgy when it is normal to stand. REFLECTION Change for the good may come when we listen with care, speak with compassion, and live out our faith. Such wisdom sees that the persistent practice of mercy, like love, comes as gift and calling from God. As we continue through this Season after Pentecost, hear the invitation to be open to the welcome God extends to all by responding to the presence and needs of others. COLLECT OF THE DAY Almighty and everlasting God, increase our faith, hope, and love, and, that we may receive all you promise, make us love what you command; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. FIRST READING A reading from the book of Proverbs 22: 1 2, 8 9, A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favour is better than silver or gold. The rich and the poor have this in common: the Lord is the maker of them all. Whoever sows injustice will reap calamity, and the rod of anger will fail. Those who are generous are blessed, for they share their bread with the poor. Do not rob the poor because they are poor, or crush the afflicted at the gate; for the Lord pleads their cause and despoils of life those who despoil them. A short silence is observed. Reader All For the Word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. PSALM 125 At the 7:45am Eucharist the Psalm is recited antiphonally, a long pause being observed at the colon. At the 11:00am Eucharist a Book of Common Prayer setting of the Psalm is sung by the Choir. Chant: W. Hayes Those who put their trust in the Lord shall be as Mount Zion: which cannot be shaken, but endures for ever. 2
As the mountains stand about Jerusalem, so stands the Lord about his people: from this time forward for evermore. For the sceptre of wickedness shall have no sway over the land apportioned to the righteous: lest the righteous set their hands to do evil. Do good, O Lord, to those who are good: to those that are upright in heart. As for those who turn aside to crooked ways, let the Lord lead them away with the evildoers: and in Israel let there be peace. SECOND READING A reading from the Letter of James 2: 1 10, My brothers and sisters, do you with your acts of favouritism really believe in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ? For if a person with gold rings and in fine clothes comes into your assembly, and if a poor person in dirty clothes also comes in, and if you take notice of the one wearing the fine clothes and say, Have a seat here, please, while to the one who is poor you say, Stand there, or, Sit at my feet, have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts? Listen, my beloved brothers and sisters. Has not God chosen the poor in the world to be rich in faith and to be heirs of the kingdom that he has promised to those who love him? But you have dishonoured the poor. Is it not the rich who oppress you? Is it not they who drag you into court? Is it not they who blaspheme the excellent name that was invoked over you? You do well if you really fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, You shall love your neighbour as yourself. But if you show partiality, you commit sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it. What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works? Can faith save you? If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one of you says to them, Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill, and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. A short silence is observed. Reader All For the Word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. We sing the hymn No. 323 (tune 149ii). 3
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Please remain standing and turn to face the Gospel reader. Reader/All Cantor All Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Jesus preached the Good News of the kingdom and healed all who were sick. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! GOSPEL READING MARK 7: Deacon A reading from the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to St Mark. All Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus set out and went away to the region of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know he was there. Yet he could not escape notice, but a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately heard about him, and she came and bowed down at his feet. Now the woman was a Gentile, of Syrophoenician origin. She begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter. He said to her, Let the children be fed first, for it is not fair to take the children s food and throw it to the dogs. But she answered him, Sir, even the dogs under the table eat the children s crumbs. Then he said to her, For saying that, you may go the demon has left your daughter. So she went home, found the child lying on the bed, and the demon gone. Then he returned from the region of Tyre, and went by way of Sidon towards the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis. They brought to him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech; and they begged him to lay his hand on him. He took him aside in private, away from the crowd, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat and touched his tongue. Then looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened. And immediately his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. Then Jesus ordered them to tell no one; but the more he ordered them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. They were astounded beyond measure, saying, He has done everything well; he even makes the deaf to hear and the mute to speak. Deacon For the Gospel of the Lord, All Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. COMMUNION Baptised Christians from all traditions are welcome to receive Communion. All others are welcome to come forward to receive a blessing. Please move to the altar rail. You are advised to take any valuables with you to Communion to ensure their security. We also request that people not use the practice of intinction at Communion (the practice of dipping the consecrated bread into the consecrated wine) as it increases the possibility of transmitting infection. If you are concerned about use of the common cup, it is acceptable for you to receive Communion in one kind (i.e. the bread only). Gluten-free wafers are available upon request. 4
COMMUNION MOTET 11AM MOTET Open thou mine eyes and I shall see: Incline my heart and I shall desire: Order my steps and I shall walk in the ways of thy commandments. O Lord God, be thou to me a God And beside thee let there be none else, No other, naught else with thee. Vouchsafe to me to worship thee and serve thee According to thy commandments In truth of spirit, in reverence of body, In blessing of lips, In private and in public. Words: Lancelot Andrewes ( ) Music: John Rutter (b.1945) FINAL HYMN 1. Christ is alive! Let Christians sing. The cross stands empty to the sky. Let streets and homes with praises ring. Love, drowned in death, shall never die. 2. Christ is alive! No longer bound to distant years in Palestine, but saving, healing, here and now and touching every place and time. 4. Women and men, in age and youth, can feel the Spirit, hear the call, and find the way, the life, the truth, revealed in Jesus, freed for all. 5. Christ is alive, and comes to bring good news to this and every age, till earth and sky and ocean ring with joy, with justice, love and praise. 3. In every insult, rift and war where colour, scorn or wealth divide, Christ suffers still, yet loves the more, and lives, when even hope has died. Words: Brian A. Wren (b. 1936) Words 1975 Hope Publishing Company. CCL license: Music: TRURO, Psalmodia Evangelica 1789 ORGAN VOLUNTARY Louis Vierne ( ) Hymns au soleil, Op. 53, no. 3 5

AN EXPLANATION FROM RICHARD COGSWELL I have been a member of the (Ignatian) Christian Life Community (CLC) for some 30 years. CLC is putting on what are called Taster Days for those that might be interested in undertaking the Ignatian retreat in daily life next year. See part of the leaflet below. When we were given the leaflet at the last CLC meeting I attended, I wondered if any St James parishioners might be interested. I asked about whether a participant in the Taster Days needed to be a member of CLC. The response from Iain Radvan SJ was Yes but they need to know that if they do not know anything about Ignatian spirituality; they might be a bit bewildered. He added: but if they surrendered themselves to the prayer, they would still be graced! Some of you may be interested in the Taster Days. Feel free to contact me if you are (richardcogswell@hotmail.com or ). 11
