REFLECTION Christ greets the fearful disciples with the word of peace and the gift of the Spirit. Easter joy results. Even Thomas doubt becomes faith s stepping-stone rather than a stumbling block. God seeks our trust so that we may become witnesses to a living hope and joy that celebrates God s presence in our lives. COLLECT OF THE DAY Almighty and eternal God, the strength of those who believe and the hope of those who doubt: may we, who have not seen, have faith and receive the fullness of Christ s blessing; who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. FIRST READING A reading from The Acts of the Apostles 2:14a, But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: You that are Israelites, listen to what I have to say: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with deeds of power, wonders, and signs that God did through him among you, as you yourselves know this man, handed over to you according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of those outside the law. But God raised him up, having freed him from death, because it was impossible for him to be held in its power. For David says concerning him, I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand so that I will not be shaken; therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; moreover, my flesh will live in hope. For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One experience corruption. You have made known to me the ways of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence. Fellow Israelites, I may say to you confidently of our ancestor David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. Since he was a prophet, he knew that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would put one of his descendants on his throne. Foreseeing this, David spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, saying, He was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh experience corruption. 3 PSALM 16 At the 7:45am Eucharist the Psalm is recited antiphonally, a long pause being observed at the colon. At the 9:00am Eucharist the following antiphon and setting of the Psalm is used. 4 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who are being protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, even if now for a little while you have had to suffer various trials, so that the genuineness of your faith being more precious than gold that, though perishable, is tested by fire may be found to result in praise and glory and honour when Jesus Christ is revealed. Although you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy, for you are receiving the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls. Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that was to be yours made careful search and inquiry, inquiring about the person or time that the Spirit of Christ within them indicated, when it testified in advance to the sufferings destined for Christ and the subsequent glory. It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in regard to the things that have now been announced to you through those who brought you good news by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven things into which angels long to look! After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained. But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, We have seen the Lord. But he said to them, Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe. A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you. Then he said to Thomas, Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe. Thomas answered him, My Lord and my God! Jesus said to him, Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe. Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name. 6 COMMUNION Baptised Christians from all traditions are welcome to receive Communion. All others are welcome to come forward to receive a blessing. Please move to the altar rail. You are advised to take any valuables with you to Communion to ensure their security. We also request that people not use the practice of intinction at Communion (the practice of dipping the consecrated bread into the consecrated wine) as it increases the possibility of transmitting infection. If you are concerned about use of the common cup, it is acceptable for you to receive Communion in one kind (i.e. the bread only). Gluten-free wafers are available upon request. HOSPITALITY AT ST JAMES There is a tradition at St James of providing refreshments after many of our services, particularly our Sunday Eucharists. This is an important ministry which enables people from the different congregations at St James to mingle and have fellowship together. There are many volunteers who contribute to this ministry, but there is a need for more to

Each team consists of 4-6 people who are responsible for providing food (such as sandwiches, sausage rolls, slices, and fruit), putting it on trays before the service in the kitchen in the Crypt and then serving the food and tea or coffee after the service. Each team looks after morning tea on one Sunday per month. The fourth Sunday urgently needs three more helpers. Please consider this important ministry and be aware that it is always possible to swap with others, if you cannot help out on a particular week. Please contact Beverley Simpson on for more details and if you can help. CAN YOU HELP? A former parishioner, Fiona Hall, who is now suffering from MS wishes to come to Sunday services when she is able. She needs transport, however, so is wondering if anyone who drives through or near Newtown would be able to collect her and bring her home again. The service will be televised and the Choir s participation is arousing considerable interest from the media. The Choir will be back singing at St James from Wednesday 3 May. 9

11 CIVIC VIRTUES AND THE POLITICS OF FULL DRIFT AHEAD 2017 Acton Lecture on Religion and Civil Society Professor Iain Benson Today almost everyone affirms the importance of values but few would insist these are shared moral essentials. How is it that the most common term of our political and even private moralities became so relativistic and what, if anything, could be offered as an alternative? Professor of Law, University of Notre Dame, Sydney, cultural observer and theorist on religion and pluralism, Professor Iain Benson, will offer some insights and guidance on steps he argues are essential for education, justice and politics in our time. Professor Benson has been involved in many of the leading cases on rights of association, conscience and religion in Canada and other countries for two decades. He was one of the drafters of the South African Charter of Religious Rights and Freedoms and remains closely involved in advancing the Charter in that country and similar projects elsewhere.
