Please advise one of the Sidespersons if you would like Communion brought to you in the pew. If necessary, you are welcome to sit for those parts of the liturgy when it is normal to stand. COLLECT OF THE DAY Saving God, whose Son Jesus was presented in the temple and was acclaimed the glory of Israel and the light of the nations: grant that in him we may be presented to you and in the world may reflect his glory; who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. FIRST READING A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah 61: 10 62: 3 I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my whole being shall exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations. For Zion s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem s sake I will not rest, until her vindication shines out like the dawn, and her salvation like a burning torch. The nations shall see your vindication, and all the kings your glory; and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will give. You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. A short silence is observed. Reader All For the Word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. PSALM 148 At the 7:45am Eucharist the Psalmis recited antiphonally, a long pause being observed at the colon. At the 10:00am Eucharist the following antiphon and setting of the Psalm is used. Response: Chant: D. Drury Praise the Lord, praise the Lord from heaven: O praise him in the heights. Praise him, all his angels: 2

O praise him, all his host. Praise him, sun and moon: praise him, all you stars of light. Praise him, you highest heaven: and you waters that are above the heavens. Let them praise the name of the Lord: for he commanded and they were made. He established them for ever and ever: he made an ordinance which shall not pass away. O praise the Lord from the earth: praise him, you sea-monsters and all deeps; Fire and hail, mist and snow: and storm-wind fulfilling his command; Mountains and all hills: fruit trees and all cedars; Beasts of the wild, and all cattle: creeping things and winged birds; Kings of the earth, and all peoples: princes, and all rulers of the world; Young men and maidens: old folk and children together. Let them praise the name of the Lord: for his name alone is exalted. His glory is above earth and heaven: and he has lifted high the horn of his people. Therefore he is the praise of all his servants: of the children of Israel, a people that is near him. Praise the Lord. Response SECOND READING A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Galatians 4: 4 7 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, Abba! Father! So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God. A short silence is observed. Reader All We sing hymn: No For the Word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. 3

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Please remain standing and turn to face the Gospel reader. Reader/All Cantor All 4 Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! This is the light of revelation to the nations, and the glory of your people, Israel. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! GOSPEL READING LUKE 2: Deacon A reading from the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to St Luke. All Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, Mary and Joseph brought Jesus up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord ), and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, a pair of turtle-doves or two young pigeons. Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord s Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel. And the child s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed and a sword will pierce your own soul too. There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband for seven years after her marriage, then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshipped there with fasting and prayer night and day. At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favour of God was upon him. Deacon All For the Gospel of the Lord, Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

COMMUNION Baptised Christians from all traditions are welcome to receive Communion. All others are welcome to come forward to receive a blessing. Please move to the altar rail. You are advised to take any valuables with you to Communion to ensure their security. We also request that people not use the practice of intinction at Communion (the practice of dipping the consecrated bread into the consecrated wine) as it increases the possibility of transmitting infection. If you are concerned about use of the common cup, it is acceptable for you to receive Communion in one kind (i.e. the bread only). Gluten-free wafers are available upon request. 6 NOTICES ST JAMES INSTITUTE St James Institute 2018 Programme Hard copies of this exciting programme of activities and events are available from the baptistry and Parish Office. Subscriptions for 2018 are now open and represent excellent value for money. Bookings can be made by to: by phone on: (02) ; or in person at Level 1, Phillip Street, Sydney. More details of events can be found online at: www. sjks.org.au/institute St James Act for Peace representatives are no longer handing out donation envelopes but there are some available in the baptistry. Each week throughout Advent and continuing into the Christmas season the focus has been on a different group from somewhere in the world which is in need. We are encouraged both to pray and to give generously. This week, pray for community organisers in Myanmar who advocate for human rights for their people. Your support of the Christmas Bowl enables strong advocacy with governments and regional organisations, both locally and overseas. Act for Peace is the international aid agency of the National Council of Churches in Australia. The money given will be used to support Act for Peace s work with communities around the world affected by conflict and disaster. For more information, visit the website: peace.org.au/christmas-bowl COMING EVENTS AT ST JAMES AND OTHER IMPORTANT ITEMS KIDS@CHURCH Kids@Church will meet each Sunday in conjunction with the 10am services until February. CAN YOU HELP? St James Church is in urgent need of more people to join the tiny band of brass polishers, who maintain the brass used in services. The job only takes about an hour to complete each time. Furthermore, you would not be required to polish each week, but involvement every 4-5 weeks would be much appreciated. All material needed for this important ministry is supplied. Contact Elizabeth Wyse on if you can help. She will also give you more details about what is involved in this valuable work. ANCHORITES NEEDED Are you someone who is unable to attend services at the church anymore? Or perhaps you know someone who fits this description. St James Church is looking for people who are willing to regularly pray in depth for the work of St James Church and for its clergy and people. Prayer points would be provided each week to such anchorites. If you are interested in this exciting and valuable ministry, please contact Christopher Waterhouse on or christopher.waterhouse@sjks.org.au ST JAMES LIBRARY Are you looking for a good book to read over the holiday season? The Library is located in the Crypt of St James Church and is open after the 10:00am service on Sunday mornings. The stock of books is updated from time to time, as new works are published; some recent publications 6

NOTICES CONT D have been added lately. There are also some gems amongst the older stock, for example a little book, produced when Fr Peter Hughes was Rector, on The Eucharist. It contains a collection of sermons on that subject, preached by a variety of people, including Associate Professor Michael Horsburgh AM. Why not check it out and the other material our library holds for borrowing? The catalogue is now available online: see sjks.org.au under the Welcome tab. SR FREDA CHRISTMAS LUNCH 10 December 2017 Another very successful Christmas Lunch. Whilst numbers were down (we had competition but that s not a bad thing!) everyone had plenty of food & treats and many were able to take food home for another meal. Thanks again to Oz Harvest for their huge contribution. Thank you to all our volunteers, who helped with the setting up of the tables, the food preparation, serving and cleaning up, and thanks again to Graham Smith (and his apprentice Marilyn!) and Chris Cook who so expertly carved the turkeys and hams for yet another year. Another big thank you to Streets Ice Cream who donated so many ice-creams we had trouble finding freezer space! The A Capella Group Voices from the Waters voluntarily again gave so much of their time to add to the atmosphere of a special Christmas lunch. Our guests do so much enjoy all the traditional carols. We rely heavily on individual cash donations. Thank you to all who so willingly donated. Thank you to everyone. It is a special day for our guests, it means so much to them COMING EVENTS AT ST JAMES AND OTHER IMPORTANT ITEMS and we could not have done it without you all. David & Robyn Carver, Co-ordinators MEDITATION GROUPS The Tuesday Group will resume on 6 February, 2018, and the Wednesday Group on 7 February, with the Friday Group (which would love more members) likely to resume on 9 February. PARISH OFFICE CLOSED AFTER CHRISTMAS The Office will re-open on 2 January, HOW CAN I FIND OUT? Sometimes parishioners and visitors are puzzled about something to do with some aspect or other of the work of St James Church. And then they wonder, How can I find out the answer? I have some suggestions: Keep your Pewsheet so you can look at it at home. Spare hard copies are always available in the baptistry and in the Parish Office (Level 1, Phillip Street, Sydney). Parish Connections may have the answer. Copies are available in the baptistry, Parish Office, and in the foyer of the St James Hall ( , Phillip Street, Sydney). A wealth of information is on our website (sjks.org.au). Use the drop down menus under the appropriate category, e.g. to get to the online version of the Pewsheet, go to Publications and just keep clicking on the date you want! (There are lots of layers in the website so plenty of information). Sue Mackenzie, Publications Editor. 7

NOTICES CONT D ST JAMES MEN S GROUP The following dates have been set for meetings of the St James Men s Group for 2018: 10 February, 14 April, 2 June, 7 July, 25 August, 27 October. Please note these dates in your diary, particularly 10 February. HOMELESS JESUS It was in December, 2016, that the notice about the bronze statue shown below was first published by the Rector. The statue will be placed against the outside north wall of the church mid-way between the North and Vestry Porches. The statue is of Jesus, complete with the marks of the nails on his feet, dressed and laying on a bench. One aim, encapsulated in the title of the statue, Homeless Jesus, is to show solidarity with the many homeless people of the streets of Sydney, including those who COMING EVENTS AT ST JAMES AND OTHER IMPORTANT ITEMS sleep within the grounds of the church, and who are fed each Sunday by the Sister Freda Mission team. There is room beside the figure on the bench for someone to sit, and to ponder, perhaps to reflect on Christ s suffering, and the mission of the church to serve all people as our statement of welcome on the front cover notes. Of course, Jesus was homeless for the last few years of his earthly life. Likewise he very likely knew poverty having fled to Egypt as a young child refugee. Jesus said, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head. (Luke 9: 58) TWENTY MINUTE TALK: ORCHESTRAL MASS On Sunday 14 January at 9:00am Robert Forgács presents a Twenty Minute Talk on Francisco Valls Missa Scala Aretina the first Orchestral Mass of the January 2018 series. The talk will be held in the St James Hall and is free to attend. All welcome. Homeless Jesus by the Canadian sculptor, Tim Schmalz, near the Vatican s Office of Papal Charities. 8
