If necessary, you are welcome to sit for those parts of the liturgy when it is normal to stand. 231 ST ANNIVERSARY OF THE FIRST ANGLICAN CHURCH SERVICE IN SYDNEY Following the entrance hymn, please remain standing. The celebrant welcomes the congregation and introduces the service. All All In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Today we commemorate The Reverend Richard Johnson who, on this day 231 years ago, conducted the first Christian service at Sydney Cove. He took as his text Psalm 116:12-13: What shall I render unto the Lord for all his benefits towards me? I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord. Travelling with his wife Mary, Richard Johnson served as chaplain both to the First Fleet and the fledgling British colony of New South Wales from In addition to guiding the spiritual life of convicts, soldiers and settlers in the new colony, he was also charged with providing education. His ministry in Sydney proved to be a difficult time. He received little support from the government and disinterest from most of the convicts and officials. In June 1793, tired of waiting on the authorities, he began to build a church himself, and by September, at a cost of about 67, completed a building capable of holding 500 people. No small achievement in its day! Tragically, it was burnt down in Johnson and his family returned to England in He was a broken man and, for the most part, retired from ministry. Let us pray, God of mercy, we thank you that you gave our ancestors the light of faith and called them to worship you in a new land. Help us to continue to grow in the love and knowledge of Jesus, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen. 2

But the Lord said to me, Do not say, I am only a boy ; for you shall go to all to whom I send you, and you shall speak whatever I command you. 4 SECOND READING A reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians 13: 1 13 If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. Then he began to say to those in the synagogue, Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing. All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They said, Is not this Joseph s son? Jesus said to them, Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, Doctor, cure yourself! And you will say, Do here also in your home town the things that we have heard you did at Capernaum. And he said, Truly I tell you, no prophet

But the truth is, there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up for three years and six months, and there was a severe famine over all the land; yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon. There were also many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian. When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with rage. They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might hurl him off the cliff. COMMUNION Baptised Christians from all traditions are welcome to receive Communion. All others are welcome to come forward to receive a blessing. Please move to the altar rail. You are advised to take any valuables with you to Communion to ensure their security. We also request that people not use the practice of intinction at Communion (the practice of dipping the consecrated bread into the consecrated wine) as it increases the possibility of transmitting infection. If you are concerned about use of the common cup, it is acceptable for you to receive Communion in one kind (i.e. the bread only). Gluten-free wafers are available upon request. 8 NOTICES COMING EVENTS AT ST JAMES AND OTHER IMPORTANT ITEMS END OF YEAR FINANCIAL RESULTS The auditors are currently working on the end of year accounts for the Parish, and a small deficit result is expected. This has been achieved, however, because of an additional distribution from the St James Hall that was not in the budget. Nevertheless, the good news is that following the mid-year appeal from the Wardens the offertories have increased by 15% over the 2017 offertories. This has been a very pleasing outcome and, if continued, should help us work toward a more balanced outcome in 2019, but we still need to act cautiously and responsibly. OFFICE STAFF CHANGES Today we farewell Sue Mackenzie from the position of Publications Editor that she has performed for the past two years. We thank her for her valued ministry in this position, which has ensured the ongoing accuracy and clarity of the pew sheet and many other publications. We also note that the Parish Secretary, Dianne Ward, has stepped back to two days per week and will usually be in the office on Wednesdays and Thursdays from now on. NEW OFFICE HOURS As a result of the reduced staffing, and with a view to making the operation of the of the office both safe and efficient, the Parish Executive has decided that from the week commencing 4 February the Parish Office opening hours will be reduced to 9:00am 5:00pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. plaque in memory of Bishop Kenneth Mason. THE ROBIN SHARWOOD LECTURE IN CHURCH LAW - 21 FEB The St James Institute in conjunction with Trinity College, University of Melbourne, presents the second annual Robin Sharwood Lecture on Thursday 21 February at 6:00pm in St James Church. This year s lecture Anglican Canon Law: Identity, Ecclesiology and Ecumenism will be presented by Professor Mark Hill, QC, of London. Professor Hill will explore if it is possible to frame principles of canon law drawn from the common features of the local laws of each province. These in turn contribute to the self-understanding of Anglican identity worldwide. The lecture will consider how this can prove a fruitful subject for study as a form of applied ecclesiology, and how it can bring vision and vitality to the ecumenical endeavour. The talk is free to attend and open to all. ST JAMES FOUNDATION DISTRIBUTIONS The Parish thanks the St James Foundation for the recent provision of final distributions for 2018: Music Foundation: 84,500 Building Foundation: 15,000 Total: $99,500 9

10 NOTICES CONT D In addition, the Music Foundation has also paid $33, to Gabriel Jackson for the composition of the Bicentenary Mass. The total distributions to the Parish for 2018 was $318, (248, to music and 70,000 to the building) which is the largest annual distribution from the Foundation to date. The Parish appreciates the support of the Foundation through the provision of these funds. RICHARD GILLARD Parishioner Richard Gillard has now settled in to his new accommodation at Montefiore Randwick, 36 Dangar Street, Randwick. Richard would welcome visitors. Entry is through an internal driveway which leads to the main building, where all visitors are requested to sign in and receive the code which permits exit and future entry.
