1 INTRODUCTION: Today we are going to discover how Jesus told the Christmas Story using the Old Testament. The Christmas Story does not begin in Luke 2, but thousands of years before Christ s arrival at Bethlehem. Luke 24: And behold, two of them were going that very day to a village named Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem. 14 And they were conversing with each other about all these things which had taken place. 15 And it came about that while they were conversing and discussing, Jesus Himself approached, and began traveling with them. 16 But their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him. 17 And He said to them, What are these words that you are exchanging with one another as you are walking? And they stood still, looking sad. 18 And one of them, named Cleopas, answered and said to Him, Are You the only one visiting Jerusalem and unaware of the things which have happened here in these days? 19 And He said to them, What things? And they said to Him, The thing about Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word in the sight of God and all the people, 20 and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him up to the sentence of death, and crucified Him. 21 But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, it is the third day since these things happened. 22 But also some women among us amazed us. When they were at the tomb early in the morning, 23 and did not find His body, they came, saying that they had also seen a vision of angels, who said that He was alive. 24 And some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just exactly as the women also had said; but Him they did not see. 25 And He said to them, O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory? 27 And beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures. 1

2 I. The Prediction Of His Birth A. Born to Conquer Satan (Genesis 3:15) Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; He [a descendant of the woman] shall bruise you on the head, and you shall bruise him on the heel. B. Born to a Virgin (Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:22-23) Isaiah 7: Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel. 15 He will eat curds and honey at the time He knows enough to refuse evil and choose good. 16 For before the boy will know enough to refuse evil and choose good, the land whose two kings you dread will be forsaken. Matthew 1: But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for that which has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for it is He who will save His people from their sins. 22 Now all this took place that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled saying, 23 BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD, AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL, which translated means, GOD WITH US. 2 Samuel 7: When your days are complete and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 I will be a father to him and he will be a son to Me; when he commits iniquity, I will correct him with the rod of men and the strokes of the sons of men, 2 Matthew 1:16 And to Jacob was born Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

3 II. The Character Of His Ministry A. He Would Be Preceded by a Messenger Isaiah 40:3 A voice is calling, Clear the way for the LORD in the wilderness; make smooth in the desert a highway for our God. Matthew 3:3 For this is the one referred to by Isaiah the prophet, saying, THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS, MAKE READY THE WAY OF THE LORD, MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT! B. He Would Begin His Ministry in Galilee Isaiah 9:1 But there will be no more gloom for her who was in anguish; in earlier times He treated the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali with contempt, but later on He shall make it glorious, by the way of the sea, on the other side of Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles. Matthew 4:12-13, Now when He heard that John had been taken into custody, He withdrew into Galilee; 13 and leaving Nazareth, He came and settled in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. 17 From that time Jesus began to preach and say, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. C. He Would Have a Ministry of Miracles Isaiah 35:5-6 5 Then the eyes of the blind will be opened, and the ears of the deaf will be unstopped. 6 Then the lame will leap like a deer, and the tongue of the dumb will shout for joy. For waters will break forth in the wilderness and streams in the Arabah. Matthew 9:35 And Jesus was going about all the cities and the villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness. D. He Would Teach in Parables Psalm 78:2 I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings of old, Read Matthew 13:34 All these things Jesus spoke to the multitudes in parables, and He did not speak to them without a parable, 3

4 E. He Would Enter Jerusalem on a Donkey Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, humble and mounted on a donkey, even on a colt, the foal of a donkey. Luke 19:35 And they brought it to Jesus, and they threw their garments on the colt, and put Jesus on it. F. He Would Be a Light to the Gentiles Isaiah 60:3 And nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising. Acts 13:47 For thus the Lord has commanded us, I HAVE PLACED YOU AS A LIGHT FOR THE GENTILES, THAT YOU SHOULD BRING SALVATION TO THE END OF THE EARTH. Luke 24:27 And beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all of the Scriptures. III. The Necessity Of His Death (Isaiah 53:3-6) Isaiah 53:3-6 3 He was despised and forsaken of men, a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and like one from whom men hide their face, He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. 4 Surely our griefs He Himself bore, and our sorrows He carried; yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, and by His scourging we are healed. 6 All of us like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; but the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on Him. IV. The Certainty Of His Resurrection (Psalm 16:10) 4

Psalm 16:10 For Thou wilt not abandon my soul to Sheol; neither wilt Thou allow Thy Holy One to undergo decay. Acts 2:31 he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that HE WAS NEITHER ABANDONED TO HADES, NOR DID HIS FLESH SUFFER DECAY. Matthew 12:40 for just as JONAH WAS THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS IN THE BELLY OF THE SEA MONSTER, so shall the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Luke 24: And they approached the village where they were going, and He acted as though He would go farther. 29 And they urged Him, saying, Stay with us. For it is getting toward evening, and the day is now nearly over. And He went in to stay with them. 30 And it came about that when He had reclined at the table with them, He took the bread and blessed it, and breaking it, He began giving it to them. 31 And their eyes were opened and they recognized Him; and He vanished from their sight. 32 And they said to one another, Were not our hearts burning within us while He was speaking to us on the road, while He was explaining the Scriptures to us?
