The fifth book of the First Testament meaning "The Words" in Hebrew. The bulk of the work is a series of addresses Moses delivered to the Israelites. We need to keep in mind that the text was written long after the time described in the form of an anticipation of the future. The book reveals us what happens when the simple faith of desert wanderers must adjust to the complex living conditions of a settled people. If there is a discrepancy, follow the online or printed schedule Pastoral Music Mary Martin Parish Choir begins rehearsals on Wednesday, September 12, at 6:30 pm, in the church building. Music ministry provides beauty, joy, comfort, inspiration, and musical prayer for our liturgies and various parish celebrations. This is possible due to the generous sharing of time and talent of diverse members. If you can carry a tune and want to learn, come sing with us! Call Mary for more information at Our first Liturgy with choir is Sunday, September 23, at 10:00 am. James 1: Actually a "homily" from the primitive/ very early church. Whoever James [a common name at the time] is, he is a person of authority probably among Jews who became Christian in the Palestine of the time. The writer of the inspired text is utterly opposed to hypocrisy, which the Law of God will reveal. If we hear and respond to the Word of God and rely on its power, our own goodness and strength will be brought to others through us. Handbells. Rehearsals will begin Tuesday, September 11, at 1:15 pm, in church. Mark 7: The Markan Gospel Community sets the foundation for a "crash course" on discipleship. Today they probe the possibility of hypocrisy, which comes from the Greek word for "actor," one who plays a role. Hypocrites are not themselves; what you see is not what they are. Jesus gives direction then about religious rules, laws and customs - they are effective only when they are internalized. What we do must come from our core of our person, not from mechanical observance. Evil will have no part in our lives unless we choose to let it The Youth Choir begins rehearsals on Wednesday, September 19, from 5:30-6:20 pm in the church building. The choir is open to students in Grades 3-8. If you sing, play guitar or other instruments and would like to join in, come to our first rehearsal. Power and belief. Jesus knew well that conflict of power and belief. Today s gospel is an example of his criticism of the Pharisees and their fanatic concerns and petty judgments. The following text from Thomas Troeger tells of the human heart and what it contains: 1. As a chalice cast of gold, Burnished, bright, and brimmed with wine, 2

3 Make me, Lord, as fit to hold Grace and truth and love divine. Let my praise and worship start With the cleansing of my heart. 4. When I dance or chant our praise, When I sing a song or hymn, When I preach your loving ways, Let my heart add its Amen. Let each cherished, outward rite Thus reflect your inward light. As a Chalice Cast of Gold In the Liturgy of the Church - Helen Ackermann We have left the words from the community of John and the challenging ideas about the bread of life and now hear from the community of Mark. Mark s gospel is challenging as well as we listen to the words for this Sunday. The words speak to us directly because they challenge us regarding our outward words and actions and our inner selves. Do what we do as followers of Jesus reflect what is truly in our hearts? Jesus challenges the Pharisees and the scribes regarding their outward piety. He says that what is important is what comes from our hearts. More evil comes from within than from without. A commentator on the gospel, Michael Simone, S. J. says God made the human heart to reflect the divine heart. If we come to know God as loving and merciful, we are also to be loving and merciful. All of the piety we might think important will not be so if our heart is not reflecting the heart of God. In our turbulent times, I have thought a great deal about this connection between the inner self, the heart, and the outer self, the actions. Some believe that the two do not need to be connected. I find that belief difficult. What is in your heart needs to be connected to your words and actions. If the human heart is to reflect the divine heart we need to examine closely our human heart to see how divine it really is. St. Catherine of Siena, who lived from says this, If we are truly humble, grounded in true self-knowledge, we would be ashamed to see ourselves being so judgmental, because we would see that it is tantamount to wanting to make rules for God. Self-knowledge and an understanding of the mercy and love of God can and should lead us to an integration of what is in our hearts and the heart of God. We call to mind this week, Gregory, the Great, pope, doctor of the Church (Monday) Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Saturday). CATHOLIC EDUCATION/FORMATION Religious Education - Mary Hart Religious Education sessions begin next week: 3 September 9 Confirmation Preparation Program after the 10:00 am Liturgy September 12 6:30 pm, Sessions for Grades 7-9 September 17 6:30 pm, Sessions for Grades 1-6 October 7 10:00 am, Sunday School If you have not registered your children yet you need to register them this week. 5 and heirs of the kingdom that he promised to those who love him? SCRIPTURE TEXTS Ordinal Time 23 Opening Prayer: Lord God, as I meditate on Your Holy Word, allow me to understand that if I am to be a disciple of Your Son, Jesus Christ, I need to help the blind see and the deaf hear and the mute speak. May I know that I am to be Christ for the marginalized so that they understand the dignity that they have been given by your divine presence within them. I make this prayer in the name of Jesus, He who is Lord forever and ever. Amen MARK 7:31-37 Again Jesus left the district of Tyre and went by way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, into the district of the Decapolis. And people brought to him a deaf man who had a speech impediment and begged him to lay his hand on him. He took him off by himself away from the crowd. He put his finger into the man's ears and, spitting, touched his tongue; then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him, "Ephphatha!" -- that is, "Be opened!" -- And immediately the man's ears were opened, his speech impediment was removed, and he spoke plainly. He ordered them not to tell anyone. But the more he ordered them not to, the more they proclaimed it. They were exceedingly astonished and they said, "He has done all things well. He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak." ISAIAH 35:4-7a Thus says the LORD: Say to those whose hearts are frightened: Be strong, fear not! Here is your God, he comes with vindication; with divine recompense he comes to save you. Then will the eyes of the blind be opened, the ears of the deaf be cleared; then will the lame leap like a stag, then the tongue of the mute will sing. Streams will burst forth in the desert, and rivers in the steppe. The burning sands will become pools, and the thirsty ground, springs of water. Reflection Questions: 1. Is it possible for me to be deaf to the love of God? 2. If I am deaf to the love of God, will I be deaf regarding the needs of others? 3. Do I allow divine love to replace my inadequate human love when I encounter the needs of others? 4. What do I need healed in my life so that I can be attentive to the needs of others? PSALM 146:7, 8-9, 9-10 R. (1b) Praise the Lord, my soul! The God of Jacob keeps faith forever, secures justice for the oppressed, gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets captives free. R. Praise the Lord, my soul! Concluding Prayer: Lord God, heal me so that I can truly be aware of the needs of others. Fill me with Your divine love fully so that I can minister as I ought in the way of Jesus, Your Son, He who is Lord forever and ever. Amen. The LORD gives sight to the blind; the LORD raises up those who were bowed down. The LORD loves the just; the LORD protects strangers. R. Praise the Lord, my soul! The fatherless and the widow the LORD sustains, but the way of the wicked he thwarts. The LORD shall reign forever; your God, O Zion, through all generations. Alleluia. R. Praise the Lord, my soul! JAMES 2:1-5 My brothers and sisters, show no partiality as you adhere to the faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ. For if a man with gold rings and fine clothes comes into your assembly, and a poor person in shabby clothes also comes in, and you pay attention to the one wearing the fine clothes and say, "Sit here, please, " while you say to the poor one, "Stand there, " or "Sit at my feet, " have you not made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil designs?
