The waiter had given her a cloth napkin. That s how she knew it was a ine restaurant. As she read the headings of the menu there were some strange-sounding titles: antipasti, vegetali, pesci, carni. But under the carni heading there were some familiar dishes. But to be sure, she inally asked her mother, What s carni? It s plural for meats, but literally, carne means lesh, was the reply. That would do. She loved meat, even though she didn t like to think of it as lesh. The graphic image of body and blood comes from the ancient world where the body is lesh and blood is life (Deut 12:23). The bread and wine of the eucharistic banquet become the Body and Blood of Christ, in a transubstantive way. The gospel reading for today is Mark s version of the Last Supper, which for him was in the context of the Passover meal. Even the singing of the hymn, which Mark is certain to include, is an integral part of the Passover to this very day. But according to the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) Jesus gave new meaning to the Passover meal. The bread that he takes, blesses, breaks, and shares is his Body. The cup of thanksgiving that is shared is his covenantal Blood. Anyone who has been to a Jewish Seder meal likely has a profound appreciation for these symbols of bread and wine, and how they were appropriated in the Christian tradition. The Passover meal, which commemorated the people s delivery from Egypt, would now commemorate Jesus death and ultimate delivery from death to resurrection. Our participation in consuming the bread and wine is a participation in the life, death, and subsequent resurrection of Jesus. We who gather around the table of the Eucharist (which is a Greek word meaning thanksgiving ) are fed by Christ and become one in him. The eucharistic feast actually causes the unity, which is why it is scandalous to have disunity at such a meal, as Paul reminded the Corinthians. The celebration of the Body and Blood of Christ is much more than the celebration of something to be revered. By necessity, the solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ causes the unity shared by Christians by their participation in the eucharistic feast. That unity was Jesus own desire expressed by his prayer to the Father. May we be instruments of that unity by our own share in that same Eucharist. REJOICE AND BE GLAD the Collar TM Fr. Jace PRECIOUS BLOOD On this solemnity we focus our attention on the Body and Blood of Christ. We listen to the story of the renewal of the old covenant, which Moses sealed by splashing the blood of animals on the altar of sacri ice, as well as on the people. Jesus, whose blood is the blood of the new covenant, shed that precious blood on the cross, saving us from sin and promising us everlasting life. Blood is the life source that courses through our bodies. The precious blood of Christ is the life source for our spirits. Today may we, like the psalmist, offer a sacri ice of thanksgiving to the Lord, whose Body and Blood strengthen us to bring the Good News to everyone we meet. J.S. Paluch

6 Is This Movie Right for My Family? Summer is fast approaching and with it comes the fun of escaping the heat for a darkened theater, popcorn, and imaginative adventure. We in the SMdP RE department recently heard some disturbing things about a new children s movie, Show Dogs, and wanted to ind out if the online chatter was true or not. It seems part of the plot of this movie may lead our youngest viewers to believe they should put up with anything like the lead dog in the movie did. He went as far as allowing his private parts to be touched in order to win the prize or reach his goal. This is a message we never want our young people to see or hear. With this in mind, we wanted to share with you several reputable sites for parents and grandparents to use as tools to evaluate movies before taking their children and teens to see them. They are very detailed in their descriptions of the plot, as well as a breakdown of the incidences of violence, sex and nudity, foul language, substance abuse, etc. Check out your kids movie choices at these sites before you take them to the show! Current and Archived Bulletins Online Current and older bulletins can be found online at If you would like to refer to a past article or activity, simply log into the parish website and click on the Lagniappe tab at the top of the home page.
