We read about his leaping for joy in Elizabeth s womb when Mary visits her cousin. Now in this gospel we jump in time to the adult John, a seemingly odd character, for sure. He is a desert dweller wearing strange clothes and eating strange food. He is a iery character with a challenging, revealing, and life-changing message. He is a charismatic prophet who attracts crowds to hear his message and instills in them the desire to acknowledge their sinfulness, repent, and be baptized by him. But not all are able to hear, respond, and repent. The harshness of John the Baptist s preaching to some Pharisees and Sadducees in today s gospel You brood of vipers! is a scathing judgment, indeed. John s harsh language, unrelenting judgment, and uncompromising challenge demand a wholehearted response: Repent! It is not good enough to claim Abraham as our father. Repentance is a wholly personal choice, personal act, personal demand to change. Repentance always changes one s life. Changing our lives is very concrete and visible. Our attitudes and behaviors noticeably change for the better when we choose to repent. At its root, repentance means to change one s mind. Only then can one act according to God s plan, thus changing our lives. When each of us changes our mind repents by conforming our will to God s, then there will be no more harm or ruin but rather the peace and harmony described by Isaiah. Repentance brings not the poison of striking vipers but the good fruit of counsel, strength, knowledge, and delight in the Lord. Repentance brings the favorable judgment that not only invites us to the kingdom of heaven but is the peace and harmony portraying the already at hand of God s reign. The choice to repent has consequences beyond the immediate. To repent takes us beyond John s baptism of water which brings a new human way to live. To repent is to embrace Jesus baptism with the Holy Spirit and ire which brings us to a new way to live in God. John directs to everyone his strong warning to repent. Some acknowledged their sins, and expressed their desire to live in the kingdom of heaven by submitting to John s baptism with water. The Pharisees and Sadducees re-sisted repentance, claiming their descent from Abraham was enough for them to belong to the kingdom of heaven. John s challenge to repent elicits two responses. Which response do we choose? Whether Jesus will gather us as wheat or burn us as chaff depends upon our choice. Fr. Jace REJOICE AND BE GLAD PREPARE THE WAY Saint John the Baptist appears on the scene today as Advent enters its second week. The mysterious consumer of locusts and wild honey, John echoes the words of the prophet Isaiah as he calls for repentance in the face of the nearness of the kingdom of heaven. The rhythms of the Christian life are often confounding. Each year we meet the Baptist and hear his calls for repentance. Each year we see him pointing to the one who is coming after him, the Lord Jesus. Yet each year the words and actions of John the Baptist echo anew in our hearts, because we have fallen into old sinful traps again and again. Advent gives us the opportunity once again to turn away from our sinful ways and embrace the gospel way of life. John the Baptist invites us to prepare the way for the Lord, in whom we place our hope. J. S. Paluch Co.

6 TEEN ACTS RETREAT Teen ACTS Retreat will be held on Thursday, January 19, 2017 Sunday, January 22, 2017 at the Dry Creek Retreat Center. 7 Announcing Steward of the Year Award Winners The St. Martin de Porres Steward of the Year award is given to the parishioners that go above and beyond in their service to the church. The Pastoral Council oversees the award and gives All parishioners the opportunity to submit nominees. Congratulations SMdP 2016 Stewards of the Year Shirley Pendleton Shirley is a member of the feast of consolation and Altar Society groups. For many years she cleaned the chapel church every Saturday morning, as well as washing the church linens. Shirley currently volunteers to straighten up the missalettes in the pews and picking up trash left in pews at church - taking 2-3 hours weekly. We are blessed to have her kind spirit and delicious cooking talents serving our parish. Other Steward of the Year Nominees for 2016: Carol Bertrand Louis Gaudet Richard Bertrand Richard serves as an altar server for Mass on Wednesday and Friday mornings. He is a member of the Knights of Columbus and volunteers at Abraham s Tent. He has served on Men s ACTS teams. He is always willing to lend assistance as needed, especially with carpentry and wood-working needs. Richard helped build the cabinets at the GV center during each remodeling. St. Martin de Porres Parish has been given a quota by the LC Diocese to collect $6,613 through a second collection for priest retirement. The quota is not a budget but is set payment the parish will be required to pay, either met by the second collection or paid out of the parish general fund. Please be as generous as possible in supporting our retiring priests who have given us their lives in service to the Lord. Retiring Priest Statistics The Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA), states that more than 95 percent of priests surveyed said that if they had to do it all over, they would still be priests. What wasn t a surprise was the evidence of the aging population in the priesthood. In 1970, the average age of a diocesan priest was 34. For religious, it was 37. In 2000, that jumped to 59 and 64, respectively, then 62 for diocesan priests and 66 for religious priests in A contributing factor is that men are entering the priesthood later in life an average age of 27 pre-vatican II, and 37 from 1992 to present. Another is that after a surge in vocations from the 1940s to the 1960s, fewer men overall are entering the seminary, and those who do tend to be older than before. According to CARA statistics, in 1908 there were fewer than 20,000 priests in the United States, half of them diocesan and half in religious orders. Vocations were highest in 1969 with 60,000 priests overall, and slightly less than two-thirds of them diocesan. There were 40,000 priests in 2008, nearly 30,000 diocesan. Dive Deeper High School Bible Study Dive Deeper is a high school-age Bible study led by the SMdP Youth Staff. This Bible study is designed to have high school aged youth inquire into the deepest recesses of the Bible, Catholicism, and the many interesting mysteries of our faith. There is no home work, no preparation - just lively discussion on scripture, current events, church history, the annual events of our Church and much more. This is an open- loor, high school youth discussion on church topics. No games played here.
