This festival of Christ the King is the last Sunday and culmination of the whole liturgical year. Next Sunday we begin Advent and thus begin again yet another paschal mystery journey through a liturgical year. This annual celebration reminds us that the dif iculties of discipleship are always rewarded by the joy of victory. The cross leads to risen life. As we embrace the cross in our own journey of discipleship each day, we are spurred on to faithfulness by remembering that it all culminates in this victory. Each year we begin and end the same journey. What keeps this cyclic pattern of our liturgical celebrations from becoming tedious? The answer lies in our taking the time to recognize our own growth in discipleship and our personal relationship with Jesus our King during this past year. Since judgment is one of the themes of the end times, it might be good to take some time this week to judge our own growth and preparedness to enter Paradise with Jesus. Without such self-re lection we run the risk of every liturgical year simply being like all others for us. Endings and beginnings always give us an opportunity to assess growth and recommit ourselves to faithful discipleship. True, the cross is not something we would naturally choose for ourselves. But the end of this liturgical year and the beginning of the new one when we encounter our victorious Christ is exactly what we need in order to be faithful to the disciple s life of self-giving for the good of others. Happy Thanksgiving to each of you and your families. As we celebrate this Thanksgiving Day, let us remember the reason why we have such a day each year. An attitude of thanksgiving reorients us from focusing on a gift received to encountering the gift-giver. An act of giving thanks, then, is always a kind of conversion. Thanksgiving draws us out of ourselves and toward another. Thanksgiving helps us forget self and think of the other. Thanksgiving changes us from self-absorption to other-centeredness. Thanksgiving turns us toward God who bestows all gifts and blessings. Fr. Jace REJOICE AND BE GLAD KINGSHIP The book of Samuel recounts for us today the anointing of David as king of Israel. It was the elders of Israel who declared David king that day, but it was God who called David to shepherd Israel. Thus mandated by the citizens of his kingdom and by his God, David took his place in a long line of kings. The apostle Paul speaks to us of kingship as well, but on a much higher plane: the kingship of Jesus our Lord. As great as David was, he and all earthly monarchs who came before and after him in their kingdoms around the world are minor kings by comparison to the true King. And lastly, we hear the story of that true King in perhaps his weakest moment: near death, hanging on a cross, taunted by a common criminal and by the world at large. J. S. Paluch Co.

Giving Tree Return Gifts Christmas Flower Second Collection A second collection for the annual Christmas lower fund is coming up at Masses, November 26 and 27 You can make a monetary donation in memory of a loved one and memorial names will be published in the Christmas weekend bulletin. Proceeds will help offset the cost of Christmas lowers and de cor to be used during Advent and Christmas. Please return your tags and gifts to the sleigh (located in the Narthex) at Mass the weekends of Dec. 3 & 4 and Dec. 10 & 11. Christmas at Sea for Foreign Sailors The Stella Maris Seafarers Center at the Port of Lake Charles are looking for donation items to give to seafaring sailors this Christmas season. These ship workers coming into the Port of LC are often at sea for 6-10 months and don t make it home for Christmas. The Center is accepting toiletry items, knit caps, playing cards, prayer cards socks, wash clothes, work gloves and more. Monetary donations are accepted as well.
