Both are about who we are, how we want to be in relation to others, and the importance of personal encounter for our very well being. In today s gospel, the encounter of Jesus with the devil parallels our own encounters with the devil. None of us, not even the God-Man, is exempt from temptation. By resisting the devil s temptations to act as the Son of God, Jesus fully embraces his human identity. Jesus facing temptation witnesses to how fully he identi ies with who we are as human beings. By resisting the devil s temptations to act against who God created us to be, we fully embrace our own human identity: graced beings created in the image of God. Jesus chooses not to misuse his divine power, taking up the mission for which he was sent. He was not sent to lord it over us, but to use his divine power to lead us to saving wholeness and well being. We choose not to act against the divine Life God has bestowed upon us, taking up the mission on which we have been sent. We continue Jesus saving ministry, reaching out to others with the Good News that God is forgiving and merciful, ever calling us to deeper relationship. Temptation is an occasion for showing that our lives are turned to God, in whom we ind our very identity and being. Like Jesus, temptations and our very resistance to them strengthen us in our choices for goodness and holiness. In making these choices we are continually choosing who we want to be: those who faithfully serve God by doing good for others this is our life s mission. Temptations lure to self-satisfaction is overcome by an even stronger lure: growth in holiness and transformation into being ever more beloved sons and daughters of God. Fr. Jace REJOICE AND BE GLAD JESUS AND THE DEVIL The devil tempted Jesus by quoting scripture, as today s Gospel reminds us. Try a self serving miracle. Try selling out. Try dazzling the audience; people are gullible, after all. Try all these easy ways. The tempter tries to urge Jesus onto the slippery slope, attempts the old soft soap, the snake oil solutions that are always readily at hand. The devil knows better, but is powerless to do better, much less be better. The devil is evil personi ied, who senses in Jesus the stronger, truly attractive presence of holiness. Evil is exposed and engaged, we are reminded in this Sunday s Gospel. Evil knows the jig is up. The undoing of lies begins with Jesus, who takes up the work of soul healing and world healing. This Lent, the Church invites us to enter into this renewing, re creative work and be made whole again. Copyright J. S. Paluch

7 In a world which demands of Christians a renewed witness of love and idelity to the Lord, may all of us feel the urgent need to anticipate one another in charity, service and good works. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI St. Martin de Porres Church Knights of Columbus are organizing a 40 Cans for Lent food drive. All Parishioners are invited to participate by donating the equivalent of one can of food per day, during Lent Ash Wednesday, February 10th through Palm Sunday, March 20th. Participants are encouraged to place a can of food in a box at home while praying daily for the poor and hungry. The Lenten Food Drive will bene it Catholic Charities, Manna Ministries and Abraham s Tent. You are asked to consider praying for the poor using the prayer below. On Palm Sunday your offering of 40 cans of food should be delivered to the church, at all Masses, to be received by brother Knights. Look for the ACTS trailer at the drop off point at the end of the driveway entrance. The Supreme Of ice of the Knights of Columbus will donate $100 for every 1,000 pounds of food collected and for every $500 donated. These funds will be forwarded to same food drive bene iciaries: Catholic Charities, Manna Ministries and Abraham s Tent. If preferred, your donation can be delivered to the parish of ice during the week Prayer for the Poor Make us worthy, Lord, to serve those people throughout the world who live and die in poverty and hunger.
