People, even close friends, can surprise us sometimes with their actions. Today we hear about a frankly odd miracle story that occurs only in the Gospel of Mark. Matthew and Luke, who used Mark as a source, apparently thought they had other miracle stories they could tell that would make the same point without repeating this one. And the Gospel of John tells us only seven signs that Jesus performed, and this is not one. Upon reading this unique Markan story, I often imagine the episode and how it might be portrayed in artwork. Can we imagine Jesus putting his inger in another person s ear? Or Jesus spitting and touching the person s tongue, groaning in a foreign language? Even so, that s precisely what the gospel tells us happened. And the Aramaic term preserved in the Greek New Testament, Ephphatha is in the imperative singular form and clearly means, Be opened. [This is one of the three rituals used following the pouring of water in Baptism. The ears and mouth of the newly baptized are signed with the cross as the minister prays that they be opened to hear and proclaim God s word.] Perhaps we are not surprised to hear that in the early centuries after Jesus death and resurrection many thought of him as a magician. Even in the Acts of the Apostles, when the disciples heal in Jesus name, Simon Magus offers them money so he can do the same. On some early Christian sarcophagi (burial chambers) Jesus is at times portrayed with a magic wand. We might excuse some of the crowds for thinking that Jesus had magic powers as it seems some later Christians did too! But Jesus was not a magician. His mighty deeds were ushering in the kingdom of God. His actions were being done by the inger of God rather than by a magic wand. Jesus was more than a wonder-worker, though he de initely worked wonders. The mighty deeds of Jesus were about restoration, healing, and wholeness. Those on the margins, those outcast, and those who were relegated to a kind of second-class citizenship on account of physical ailments were healed, made whole, and thereby restored to the community. And as so often happens in the Gospel of Mark, Jesus orders those he heals not to tell anyone about it, but to no avail. Something so astonishing could not be kept under wraps. Almost like children, the more he told them not to, the more they proclaimed it. That is true evangelical zeal! REJOICE AND BE GLAD Fr. Jace SEE BEYOND OUTWARD APPEARANCES The phrase Sunday best has lost much of its meaning in our society today. Some lament the loss of people dressing up for church on Sunday; others think it s a healthy sign that we re as casual in attire gathered before the Lord as we are elsewhere. No matter which school of thought on this topic we belong to, James would probably chastise us. In either case, we are still focused on external appearance, mistaking it for some sort of favored position before God. True, James criticizes the community that favors the rich and well-dressed while ostracizing the poorly clothed, but even more he criticizes the making of distinctions, making choices based on criteria that having nothing to do with the reign of God. James might turn our attention to the reign of God described by Isaiah, in which people are healed and the earth becomes ripe to bear fruit. Jesus today is focused on this reign of God, healing a Gentile man in a region hostile to his Jewish faith, not mindful of the man s origins or clothing or status or ability to repay. Isaiah, James, and Jesus in Mark s Gospel all call us to look more deeply to ind where the will of God needs to be done, and has been done, on earth as in heaven. J.S. Paluch

CLEAN OUT THE FREEZER DAY Annual Abraham s Tent Bene it Set for September 30, 2018 The SWLA Sportsmen for the Hungry organization, in af iliation with Hunters for the Hungry, will host their annual food collection drive on Sunday, September 30 th, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Gordon s Drug Store parking lot, located at 2716 Lake Street in Lake Charles. Area residents are asked to clean out their freezers and pantries and donate food items to Abraham s Tent. Needed food items include: wrapped and labeled frozen meat and ish (wild and domestic), canned and boxed foods, rice, cooking oil, seasonings, vegetables and paper goods. A convenient drive-thru drop off service will be offered. Everyone is invited to participate. All collected food will be directly donated to Abraham s Tent, a local non-pro it organization dedicated to providing food for the poor and hungry in our community every day of the year. Please contact the church of ice at Pastoral Council Elections Two Positions Open What is a Pastoral Council? The objective of a pastoral council is to offer help and advise the pastor on ministry matters, especially those that affect all parishioners, of whatever age, ethnic origin, gender, economic condition, cultural or educational background. The council, in order to be successful in its ministry, must operate in a spirit of prayer and study. The parish pastoral council assists the pastor in evaluating the pastoral and ministerial needs of the parish and assists him in the proper decisions pertaining to such matters. The council is a consultative body functioning under the authority and presidency of the pastor and should be in the nature of true consultation. This year we will be electing two (2) members to the pastoral council. Nominations will be open from Sept A ballot will be in the bulletin the weekends of October 2nd and 9th. Voting will be held the weekend of October 7th and 14th. The two (2) new pastoral council members will be announced at The Parish Celebration Day on November 4th.
