3 PRAY FOR THE SICK Jace Boyd Eric Duffy Elnora Granger Tommy Greenlee Dennis Primeaux Lionel Thibodeaux Sheila Thibodeaux Prayer For The Sick New Rules for Submitting Prayers for the Sick Names Because of the dif iculty in managing names of the sick being added and removed, as of November 1, names added to the Prayer list will stay in the bulletin for 30 days and then removed. Also, only family members of the Sick may request prayers. Family members will need prior approval from their sick loved one before requesting prayers. To add a name call the parish of ice at or use the parish website at Schedule Your Facility Activity Please Don t Assume a Facility is Available SMdP is blessed to have many service and ministry groups active within our church parish. However, with our very limited meeting space, competition for the same space is at an all time high. Please check with Jackie Goodwill at the SMdP Church Of ice to get your regular, occasional or special meeting/activity scheduled on the of icial church calendar. Occasionally we allow non-parishioner groups to rent our space - but registered parishioners have irst right to all church facilities. That is, today s reading from Luke is based on the opening verses of the Gospel of Mark with important additions. Beginning with John the Baptist s preaching, Luke situates the Christ-event in a particular historical time and place, for, as he tells us in Acts 26:26, these things did not happen in a corner. And it is precisely because of Luke s desire to give us the historical details that scholars can be fairly con ident of their dating. Luke cites both civil and religious leaders to situate the Christ-event in history. The Emperor Tiberius, who reigned from AD 14 to 36, succeeded Caesar Augustus, which means that the ifteenth year of Tiberius s reign could be anywhere from AD 27 to 29 depending on how one counts the years. This is the most speci ic date given by Luke in this passage; the other igures named by Luke all fall within a wider range than that. For example, Pontius Pilate served from AD 26 to 36. The historical details do much for the modern Christian (and ancient Christian for that matter) in demonstrating that Jesus was a historical igure. The Christ-event is not a mere myth like so many other Greek and Roman tales. Jesus was a living, breathing Jewish human being who lived in the Roman Empire in the province of Judea. These things did not happen in a corner (cf. Acts 26:26). Once the events are situated in their historical setting, Luke continues the narrative with the story about John the Baptist, whose birth is recounted in the irst chapter. There we hear the story of Zechariah and Elizabeth having a child even though Elizabeth is barren. It is Luke who essentially makes John a cousin of Jesus, a detail found nowhere else in the New Testament. The designation of John as son of Zechariah (Luke 3:2) is a nod to the story in the irst chapter. These details alone the historical setting and the familial relationship be-tween John and Jesus tell us we are dealing with a unique author who has his own theological insights to convey. Luke is a gifted storyteller, theologian, and evangelist. We do well to read his story carefully. Fr. Jace AWAITING THE SALVATION OF GOD The world does not seem big enough to contain the jubilation of the irst reading. In the Gospel reading, the Roman empire isn t big enough, either. The great powers of Rome are named and made to stand waiting for the arrival of God s salvation. And we ind Paul meditating joyfully on what really matters. According to Baruch, the city of Jerusalem is like a person standing on tiptoe looking for God s salvation, which is coming from the east. Those who were led away on foot, heads down, now come back, a proud people. Why, the very way is smoothed out. The path is lined with fragrant, lush trees. It can t get any better than this, can it? Well, yes, it can. For a voice calls out in the desert. Here is the beginning of the salvation of God. J.S. Paluch

4 The Jesse Tree......A Lesson in Waiting The term Jesse Tree comes from the following verse in the book of Isaiah: There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. Isaiah 11:1-4 In this verse, Isaiah predicts the coming of Jesus. He is telling the people that, one day, a great ruler will rise up from the descendants of the great King David. Jesse, was David s father. This was exciting news to the people of Isaiah s time. Many of the kings who ruled after David were poor rulers. They lead their people away from worshiping God. Eventually David s kingdom split in two and then faded away. Isaiah s prophecy of a stump shows how the family of David had been cut down. Jesus would be like a new growth and a new hope for the kingdom that was once strong and worshiped God as one. The Tree of Jesse in Isaiah was the original use of the family tree. So, all of our family tree s today are based on Jesus s family tree. The Jesse Tree is a decorative tree used during Advent to retell the stories of the Bible that lead to Jesus s birth. Our SMdP Religious Education classes will learn more about the stories from the bible associated with Jesse and the waiting, anticipation and eventual coming our Lord Jesus Christ. Since Advent is a season of waiting, our Jesse Tree can help you to build joy and anticipation as you wait for Christmas. This Advent season take the time to appreciate the true meaning of the coming of the new king. Teach your children and yourself what the anticipation of Christ could mean in your life.

I offer a brief history of the prayer. In 1884, Pope Leo XIII ordered certain prayers to be said after Low Mass in defense of the independence of the Holy See following the fall of the Papal States in These prayers were known as the Leonine Prayers. God s help was sought for a satisfactory solution to the loss of the Pope s temporal sovereignty, which deprived him of the independence felt to be required for effective use of his spiritual authority. The prayer to St. Michael was added to the Leonine Prayers in The Pope s status as a temporal leader was restored in 1929 by the creation of the State of Vatican City, and 1930 Pope Pius XI ordered that the intention for which these prayers should from them on be offered was to permit tranquility and freedom to profess the faith to be restored to the af licted people of Russia. The practice of reciting this and the other Leonine prayers after Mass was of icially suppressed by the Sept. 26, 1964 Instruction Inter Oecumenici giving instruction for the implementation of the Novus Ordo [the new Order of Mass of Vatican II] and came into effect on March 7, These prayers continued to be used in the celebration of Mass in the Extraordinary Form. In his Regina Caeli Address on Sunday April 24, 1994, Pope St. John Paul II recommended the use of the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel saying, Although this prayer is no longer recited at the end of Mass, I ask everyone not to forget it and to recite it to obtain help in the battle against the forces of darkness and against the spirit of this world. More recently, following the sex scandal involving several members of the episcopate and the clergy, Pope Francis asked the faithful around the world to recite the Holy Rosary to the Blessed Virgin Mary daily, throughout the month of October, together with fasting and penance as already requested in the August 20, 2018 Letter to the People of God, for the protection of the Church against Satan, the Great Accuser, ending it with the ancient prayer Sub Tuum Praesidium (We ly to thy protection, O holy Mother of God,...) dedicated to the Virgin and with the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel. Several bishops in the world have asked for the reintroduction of the prayer to St. Michael at the end of each Mass. Bishop Provost has issued the Decree recently read at Mass and placed in the bulletin stating that the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel be recited following every Mass, with a few exceptions. Beginning January 2, 2019, Mass will conclude with the blessing and dismissal. After reverencing the altar, the priest, deacon and servers will line up for the recessional as usual. The priest will lead the Prayer to St. Michael. At the conclusion of the prayer, the Recessional Hymn (which is an optional addition following the dismissal) will begin, and the ministers and servers will process to the Narthex. NEW PRAYER DECREED FOR THE END OF MASSES St. Michael the Archangel Bishop John Glen Provost has decreed the prayer to St. Michael the Arch Angel to be prayed at the end of every Mass. Consider clipping the prayer card below and learning the prayer for Mass.
