3 Judith Hyatt Peace in society is also put at risk by certain threats to religious liberty: it is a question sometimes of the marginalization of religion in social life; sometimes of intolerance or even of violence towards individuals, symbols of religious identity and religious institutions. It even happens that believers, and Christians in particular, are prevented from contributing to the common good by their educational and charitable institutions. In order effectively to safeguard the exercise of religious liberty it is essential to respect the right of conscientious objection. This frontier of liberty touches upon principles of great importance rooted in the very dignity of the human person. They are, as it were, the [load-]bearing walls of any society that wishes to be truly free and democratic. ~Pope Benedict XVI, Address to the Diplomatic Corps, January 7, 2013 Society of St. Vincent de Paul As the crowds doubted who Jesus was because of his simple origins, so will others doubt who we are if we courageously live the gospel. No matter what simple origins we might have, our living the gospel is what must shape our everyday choices. This means, for example, that if the chatter around the coffee machine at work grows uncharitable or coarse, we have the courage to walk away. If prejudice exists among our friends and acquaintances, we have the courage to extol the dignity of the minority. There was a widespread belief in the first religions of the world that God stirred creation into being by a word, a song, a musical note. Music and a sense of God s presence have always been inseparable. In the liturgy, your voice is invited into this song as the priest names the reasons for our praise. Heaven and earth are full of your glory, and we are not passive onlookers, but participants in this glory. Catholic prayer no longer assigns this angelic hymn to a choir, but gives it to you to sing. Even if your voice is thought to be suitable only for a well insulated shower stall, you are called into this song. We are born to sing just listen to a baby testing the full range of newly discovered vocal abilities. Soon we get shushed and hushed into quiet, and given lots of messages that our voices are unwanted, and that we need to raise our hands in order to be heard. All of that is overturned in liturgy, the place where God waits to hear us come alive in the song of all creation. In heaven, everyone s in the choir; why not start practicing now? Es interesante como el pueblo cristiano tiene un cierto afecto para Jesús en su aspecto de niño. Desde hace siglos con el evangelista Lucas y la virgen María la imaginación cristiana ha ido buscando al Divino Niño en el templo; con san Cristóbal lleva cargando al Niño Dios sobre los hombros mientras cruza el rió de la vida y san Antonio de Lisboa juega con el Niñito Jesús sobre un libro teológico mientras estudia la Palabra de Dios. Fueron los monjes cistercienses del siglo XII quienes primero desarrollaron esta devoción al Niño Jesús. En su afán por conocer mejor al Dios hecho humano entraban por medio de la meditación imaginativa en los cuatro evangelios. Esta meditación es un entrar en la vida de Jesús de tal manera que vives los eventos en tu corazón y desarrollar así una relación afectiva con el Señor. 4 AN ONGOING MISSION/UNA MISIÓN CONTINUA In his hometown synagogue, Jesus neighbors are amazed by his words. Nevertheless, they remind each other, Is this not Joseph s son? Surely the people know who he is. The carpenter s son. The young man who had learned in this very synagogue. The boy down the street. Conflict arises as Jesus begins to define himself in a new way. When he compares himself to the ancient prophets Elijah and Elisha the tensions grow. The tensions multiply when Jesus begins to tell of a new mission for God s people: the good news of the scriptures is intended for all. In his famous passage from the First Letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul reminds us of the eternal nature of love. Love does not come to an end. In today s readings, we are reminded that, like love, Jesus mission cannot be contained. Jesus slips through the crowd of persecutors and moves on to new challenges. We are called to this same perseverance in the name of love. Living God s Word If we seek to make a journey back to our roots and not simply into nostalgia, we need to remember that roots are always found in the dirt and the mud. A journey back to our roots, then, will also place us square in the midst of all of our life s unattractive earthiness En la sinagoga de su pueblo natal, los vecinos se maravillaban con las palabras de Jesús. Meditation Today the world has special need of people whose minds and hearts have been enlightened by the word of the Lord and who can offer a credible witness that opens the hearts and minds of many others to desire God and true life, life without end (see Benedict XVI, Door of Faith, 15). The Lord Who Will Never Leave Us Mission On February 13, a more intense phase of the Year of Faith begins. Ash Wednesday opens the door to the Lenten journey of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving that leads the catechumens to the life-giving waters of baptism and the rest of us to the renewal of our baptismal vows. On the before Lent, to encourage us to turn away from sin and begin anew on the path of personal conversion and public witness, Luke shows us Jesus refusing to leave sinful Peter. Indeed, Jesus calls Peter to catch others so they can have life in all its fullness. Luke doesn t say fish for people, as Matthew and Mark do, but catch, using a special Greek word that means catch alive, that is, rescue from the wild for a new and better life. We who have been caught alive to enjoy life in all its fullness are sent to rescue our brothers and sisters, fellow sinners, from danger and lead them to fullness of life with Jesus. Prepare for a special Year of Faith Lent by identifying the sins that keep me from a deeper friendship with Christ and determining what specific form my Lenten conversion should take. TOILETRIES NEEDED Marshall County Homeless Ministries Toiletries are needed for the homeless that are being sheltered on a daily basis by various churches in the county. Although St. William does not have appropriate facilities to help with shelter, we are/will be assisting with food, laundering linens, volunteers, etc. for the Room in the Inn program sponsored by the Marshall County Homeless Ministries. If you can provide travel-sized toiletries for those in need, please place them in the container in the back of the church labeled for this purpose. Yvonne died last Monday at her home surrounded by family. Funeral arrangements are pending, but we will celebrate a prayer service and visitation in the near future and a funeral mass at a later date once her family can gather. Hail Mary Our Father Glory Be Days for Life is a national and interdenominational campaign to open hearts to the sanctity of human life and the horror of abortion. The campaign is based on a three-point program of Prayer and Fasting, Constant Vigil, and Community Outreach. This Spring s campaign will be held at the Planned Parenthood at 1211 South 27 th Place, Birmingham from February 13 th through March 24th, from 6:00am to 6:00pm every day. This will be the 10 th campaign in the city of Birmingham, and past campaigns have seen great success in opening hearts and minds toward life.
