2 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 2 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 3, 2019 Faith, hope, and love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love. 1 Corinthians 13:13 AN ONGOING MISSION In his hometown synagogue, Jesus neighbors are amazed by his words. Nevertheless, they remind each other, Is this not Joseph s son? Surely the people know who he is. The carpenter s son. The young man who had learned in this very synagogue. The boy down the street. Conflict arises as Jesus begins to define himself in a new way. When he compares himself to the ancient prophets Elijah and Elisha the tensions grow. The tensions multiply when Jesus begins to tell of a new mission for God s people: the good news of the scriptures is intended for all. In his famous passage from the First Letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul reminds us of the eternal nature of love. Love does not come to an end. In today s readings, we are reminded that, like love, Jesus mission cannot be contained. Jesus slips through the crowd of persecutors and moves on to new challenges. This will be a morning only session 9:30am 11:00am in the Beatitude Room. The series will conclude on March 19 th or thereabouts. The focus of the study will be Luke s Gospel. Knights of Columbus Basketball Free Throw Contest All boys and girls ages nine to fourteen are invited to participate in the Knights of Columbus Basketball Free Throw Contest. The contest will be held on Sunday, February 10 at the St. Teresa of Avila Parish Hall. Registration begins at 11:30am, and the competition starts at 12:00am. This is a free event. Contestants must be at least age 9 on January 1, Winners will advance to the District contest which will take place in this location immediately following our local contest. District winners will advance to the Chapter, and State competitions. A copy of the contestant s birth certificate to verify age, and a parent s signature of consent for the registration sheet are required. Nine, ten and eleven year old competitors will shoot from a distance of twelve feet, while the older competitors shoot from the standard free throw distance of fifteen feet. 4 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 4 GOD IS ALWAYS A LOVING GOD In the Gospel today we find people of the town of Jesus, Nazareth, who at first are astonished at the gracious words that came from the mouth of Jesus. Soon they start complaining as they know Him as one of their own, the son of Joseph the carpenter. They wonder where He learned all His wisdom and how He was able to work miracles in nearby towns. Very quickly they get angry with Him and even try to kill Him. We should rejoice that our God is not a God who is moody like those people. Our God is always a loving God whose only interest is our good, our peace and our joy. A good prayer to make might well be Thank you Lord for you being you that is, a God who is unchangeable, who is not moody, a God on whom I can rely totally all the time because He simply is LOVE. Isn t that real good news in the Gospel today? That God loves us totally and unconditionally whether we are virtuous or sinning. That is why in the second reading St. Paul reminds us about the true nature of love and therefore who God is. Instead of reading the text as Love is always patient, kind and so on, we can put in the name of Jesus in place of the word Love. Maybe we may get a clearer understanding of who God is. May He teach us how to love better, how to love more. Thank you Jesus above all, for you being you never moody but always loving, compassionate, forgiving. Amen Fr. It seems the first hint of trouble came when the Pastor preached on Dedicating oneself to service and the Choir Director chose to sing I shall not be moved. Trying to believe it was a coincidence, the Pastor put the incident behind him. The next Sunday he preached on giving. Afterwards, the choir squirmed as the director led them in the hymn Jesus paid it all. By this time the Pastor was losing his temper. Sunday morning attendance swelled as the tension between the two built. A large crowd showed up next week to hear his sermon on the Sin of gossiping. Would you believe the Choir Director selected, I love to tell the story. There was no turning back. The following Sunday the Pastor told the congregation that unless something changed he was considering resigning. The entire Church gasped when the Choir Director led them in Why not tonight?. Truthfully, no one was surprised when the Pastor resigned a week later, explaining that Jesus had led him there and Jesus was leading him away. The Choir Director could not resist singing, What a friend we have in Jesus. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ OUR FAMILY Please pray for those who have passed through death into new life with Christ, especially Rose Cardinal.

5 February 3, 2019 Page 5 Cuarto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 3 de febrero de 2019 Ahora tenemos estas tres virtudes: la fe, la esperanza, y el amor; pero el amor es la mayor de las tres. 1 Corintios 13:13 UNA MISIÓN CONTINUA En la sinagoga de su pueblo natal, los vecinos se maravillaban con las palabras de Jesús. No obstante, se preguntaban: No es este el hijo de José? Con seguridad la gente sabía quién era Jesús. El hijo del carpintero. El joven que aprendió en esa misma sinagoga. El muchacho de la calle. El conflicto surge cuando Jesús empieza a definirse de una manera nueva. Las tensiones aumentan cuando se compara con los antiguos profetas Elías y Eliseo. Las tensiones se multiplican cuando Jesús empieza a hablar de una nueva misión para el pueblo de Dios: la Buena Nueva de la Escritura está dirigida a todos. En su famoso pasaje de la primera carta a los Corintios, san Pablo nos recuerda la naturaleza del amor eterno. El amor no termina. En la lectura de hoy, se nos recuerda que, como el amor, la misión de Jesús no se puede detener. Jesús se desliza entre la multitud de perseguidores y sigue adelante con nuevos retos.
