1 The Franciscans A Newsletter of St. Francis Episcopal Church, Goldsboro, NC August 2018 What s the Difference between Change & Change? You read that correctly. In addition to what we see as good & bad change, we may have forgotten about receiving change since we may now often pay electronically for purchases. When we pay in cash, change may jingle happily in a pocket. We may respond to the various kinds of change positively, negatively, neutrally. When paying cash was the norm, some of us liked getting new coins or collected special old ones. When I use money instead of electronics to pay, receiving money back reminds me, although I ve spent money, I have financial resources in hand. Each of us experiences change in life situations at some point. Some experience change often! When life s demands exhaust our resources [financially or emotionally] we can learn & grow, relying on God s grace, which we often receive through another human s help, insight, kindness. How positively do we respond to & treat ourselves when we face the challenge of change? When we see change negatively, feel challenged by change, find ourselves in a crisis, we can learn from the Chinese the word for crisis, which is written with 2 brush strokes: 1 st is the stroke for danger, 2 nd is the stroke is for opportunity. [Confusion Is a State of Grace by Barbara F. Page 75.] Notice the perspective about opportunity we express when we pray the Prayer Attributed to St. Francis [Book of Common Prayer p. 833]. Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Where there is hatred, let us sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is discord, union; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. Grant that we may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; & it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen. This prayer helps adjust our perspective about serving but doesn t require our overworking ourselves & doing too much. Remember: Jesus encourages the disciples to rest. They get in a boat & float on a lake to get away from the crowd s clamoring demands. Like them, we all need to give ourselves a break. Notice what we say as we pray the prayer For the Good Use of Leisure BCP P. 825: O God, in the course of this busy life, give us times of refreshment & peace; & grant that we may so use our leisure to rebuild our bodies & renew our minds, that our spirits may be opened to the goodness of your creation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Use our leisure to rebuild our bodies & renew our minds. Why? So our spirits may be opened to the goodness of God s creation. Where are you on a scale of 1-10 [least to best] in giving yourself a break? Where are you on a scale of 1-10 [least to best] in accepting someone s offer to help you or handle work for you? Where are you on this scale when it comes to asking for help or a break? If you fall at the lower end of the scale consider this: Can you climb up a rope attached only to your own belt? Confusion is a State of Grace. P. 80. Peace & Blessings, Marcia+
