1 A Newsletter of St. Francis Episcopal Church April 2014 Dear Friends Easter is almost upon us! Alleluia! But first we must experience the events of Holy Week leading up to the Great Feast of the Resurrection. It is my sincere hope that what we have planned here at Saint Francis will be an enriching spiritual journey that will enhance our celebration. Our journey begins with: Praise the Lord Palm Sunday Sunday of the Passion The day is called both Palm Sunday and Sunday of the Passion. The first name comes from the fact that it commemorates Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem when the crowd laid palm branches before him. (John 12:13). The second name comes from the narrative of the Passion that is read on this day. Holy Week begins on this Sunday which joins the foretelling of Christ s triumphant entry and the proclamation of the passion. Be humble with the Lord The Maundy Thursday Liturgy 7:00 p.m. The word Maundy is derived from the Latin word mandatum novum meaning new command. It refers to the new commandment Jesus gave to the disciples at the Last Supper that they should love one another (John 13:3 17). At this service we follow Jesus example of humility by the washing of feet as Jesus did with his disciples. We also commune with one another at the table as Jesus did with his disciples at the Last Supper. Finally the entire church is stripped of all symbols and remains that way until our celebration on Easter Morning, as a reminder of the desolation, despair and loneliness of the passion ahead. Watch with the Lord A Vigil in the Garden 8:00 p.m. Thursday through 5:00 p.m. Good Friday The Vigil in the Garden, while not a sanctioned liturgy of the Church, is nonetheless an appropriate act. Prayer is central to our life as a community of faith as we remain constant and connected to our Lord. This Prayer Vigil is derived from the Gospel of Mark 14:37ff where Jesus goes to Gethsemane with his disciples to pray. It is just prior to the passion and Jesus expresses his overwhelming sorrow and asks them to stay and keep watch. So, we too will stay following the service on Maundy Thursday in a garden prepared, to wait and keep watch with the Lord as he journeys to the Passion and Cross on Good Friday. Walk with the Lord The Stations of the Cross 6:30 p.m. Good Friday The Stations of the Cross, also called the Way of the Cross, is a devotion to the passion of Christ consisting of prayers and meditations on the fourteen occurrences that were experienced by Christ on His way to the crucifixion. There was a time when it was popular to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land to walk in the footsteps of Jesus to Calvary. As this was not available to everyone, the Stations of the Cross became a regular substitute representing the critical events from Scripture and tradition of Jesus journey to the cross. We walk in a solemn procession from one station to another as Christ walked the Via Dolorosa, the Way of Sorrow. Rise up with the Lord EASTER The Feast of the Resurrection 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! The Lord is Risen! The Lord is Risen indeed! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! This is the great acclamation of Easter. It says that there is nothing, neither death nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth nor anything in all creation that will be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38ff) On this Day of days we sing, for the first time since Ash Wednesday, the Gloria in excelsis. This year we are asking everyone to bring in bells or wind chimes, cymbals or anything clangy to ring during the singing of the Gloria. Let us make a joyful noise unto the Lord of Hosts! These are the main events of Holy Week through Easter Sunday. Later in the newsletter you will find a more complete list of activities, dates and times. Praise the Lord. Be Humble with the Lord. Watch with the Lord. Walk with the Lord. Rise up with the Lord! Faithfully yours, Father Doug+

PARISH WELLNESS At this time of year pink eye (conjunctivitis) is commonly seen and is quite contagious if caused by a bacterial or viral infection. Early diagnosis and treatment can help limit its spread. Pink eye can be highly contagious for as long as two weeks after signs and symptoms begin. Check with your doctor if you have any questions about when your child can return to school or child care. Remember to always follow your physician s recommendations and use any medication as prescribed. This is another reason to practice good hand washing as described in the January Parish Wellness posting as well as to change towels, washcloths, and pillowcases frequently and to avoid sharing towels. For more information: How can you insure that your bones are strong, helping to prevent fractures? The best prescription for healthy bones includes: Getting plenty of calcium in your diet. Performing weight-bearing exercise. Getting enough vitamin D. (Your body needs vitamin D to absorb calcium.) Discuss your risk of low bone density with your physician (possibly a bone density test, Vitamin D levels, Calcium and Vitamin D supplements). For more information:

Worship space is very important and speaks volumes about how we understand the worship of the church. You might say we are going to consider the Feng shui of Christian worship. Parishioners with last name A-J bring soup or salads K-Z bring sandwiches Topic: What we Value as a Community of Faith. The Liturgy of the Church tells us many things about who we are, what we believe, and as such, what we value. We will look at the Prayers of the People, The Baptismal Covenant, the Creed, and the Eucharistic Prayers. Parishioners with last name A-J bring sandwiches K-Z bring soup or salads Meditations from the Flower Guild Taken from God in the Garden by Maureen Gilmer Lord, as my garden awakens with the early signs of spring, grant me the courage to examine my conscience and to renew myself as well. Just as the garden begins anew each year, let my Easter confession separate me from the sins of my past so that I may grow and flourish too. Amen. Easter: They said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She said to them, "They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him." When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?" Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away." Jesus said to her, "Mary!" She turned and said to him in Hebrew, "Rabbouni!" (which means Teacher). John 20:13-16 Meditation: It is moving to think that the risen Christ was so like a gardener that Mary didn't recognize him at first. This event sanctifies gardening, for this calling was important enough for John to include it in his Gospel. Perhaps becoming a gardener satisfies us so deeply it is a quasireligious act. Unlike other hobbies that are strictly in the realm of man, the cultivation of living plants becomes much more than mere science or aesthetics. It was no mistake that the early church fathers placed the Resurrection so close to the spring equinox, the time was sowing, when all the plant life returns to green the countryside. Spring is also the greening of the gardener s soul, for it is the coming forth of our whole passionate world of plants after the cold, dark, and seemingly endless winter.
