1 A Newsletter of St. Francis Episcopal Church March 2015 Dear Fellow Parishioners, We are entering an exciting time for our beloved St. Francis as we begin our search for a new Priest. We have already been blessed by having a full calendar of Supply Priests for Eucharist and our own Lay Leaders for occasional Morning Prayer. Please give our Supply Priests a warm St. Francis welcome and support our services. Rest assured that we shall have ongoing Pastoral care until our new Priest-in-Charge is called. Although we currently do not have our own Priest, everything at St. Francis will continue as normal, and as part of that we shall have Baptisms at Easter, April 5 th. If you are interested in being baptized, please let me know. My home number is , and my cell is , please call if you need any kind of assistance. The Vestry will meet with Bishop Rob Skirving on Tuesday, March 24 th at 6:00 p.m. for guidance and information on our search for a new Priest-in- Charge. Roger Brogneaux, Senior Warden Romans 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. My dearest friends, February 9, 2015 Thank you! Thank you for everything; your love, prayers, friendship; your laughter and your tears; your faith and your witness! I shall hold you all with special affection in my heart! I did not get a chance to really look at the banner you purchased in honor of my ministry among you. So I went back and gazed upon it with my heart rejoicing over such beauty. The Alpha and Omega the beginning and the end... The best and most accurate theological statement of God! It says it all. For me, I m so blessed to have you be the beginning of my renewed faith and the ending of my career. My Kitchen Aid sits proudly and in full view on my counter beside the photograph of all of us, smiling waving and just having a fabulous time together. Always remember - that in addition to our gracious God, I love you all more than my luggage! Don t forget to take your shoes off some day in the church.... and send me a picture. Our / My love and affection always, Penny and Doug+
2 2 ~ The Franciscans March 2015 ~ Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori Lent Message 2015 Lent is a journey that is about enlightenment if we re willing to think about it that way. Lent is about to begin. That word in English comes from an Old English word that means to lengthen, and it s a reminder of the days getting longer as we move toward summer out of the dark of winter. But in a number of other languages, particularly Spanish and French, the word for Lent reflects forty days, cuaresma. Forty days of wandering in the desert, forty days of Jesus out in the desert. It s also about a journey. And it s a journey that is about enlightenment if we re willing to think about it that way. Lent is an ancient tradition of solidarity and preparation for those who look forward to Baptism at the Easter Vigil. It has always been a time for prayer and study, fasting, self-denial, and alms-giving, sharing what we have with those who do not have. Prayer is an opportunity to reflect on who walks with us in the desert, who brings light into the world. Study is an opportunity to do the same kinds of things looking at the history of our tradition, where have human beings found light and direction in their journey through this world. Fasting and self-denial are an inward-reflection on what it is that keeps us in the dark, or what it is that keeps us directionless, or that keeps us overly self-focused. And it becomes an invitation to turn outward and share what we have with those who have not. To build solidarity among God s people and the rest of the earth. One of the most memorable Ash Wednesdays I ever spent was in San Jose, Costa Rica, in a school for children. I was asked to place ashes on the foreheads of toddlers. It was a provocative experience in the deepest sense, reminding very small children that they are mortal. That cross that comes on our foreheads on Ash Wednesday is a reminder of the cross that s put there at Baptism. You are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ s own forever. The cross that comes at Ash Wednesday is a reminder that you are dust and to dust we shall return, that we share that dust with every other human being who has ever walked this planet, that we share that dust with the stars and the planets, that we share that dust with all that has been created. We are made for relationship with creator and creation. Lent and cuaresma is a journey to walk toward that light. May it be a blessed one this year. The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori Presiding Bishop and Primate, The Episcopal Church [Episcopal Church Office of Public Affairs press release] ECW NEWS Tuesday, March 10, 7:00 pm Book Club The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd This exquisitely written novel is a triumph of storytelling that looks with unswerving eyes at a devastating wound in American history, through women whose struggles for liberation, empowerment, and expression will leave no reader unmoved. 10am Bible Study Bible study continues Fridays at 10am through March 27, Living Beyond Yourself is the title of our Bible Study this is a Beth Moore study with contributions by others. 6 6 ~ The Franciscans March 2015 ~ We have ONE FINAL TASK to complete for our th Anniversary Celebration! We plan to bury two Time Capsules March 8 th (Sunday) after the 10:30 am service. You still have the opportunity to include items in the capsules if submitted by Wednesday, March 4 th. (Some examples would be photos, letters, etc.) Wednesday, March 4 th The 2 nd Lenten Supper Program will be dedicated to working on more items to go in the Time Capsules. Those in attendance will be given paper and pen to write a short note to the future. Once everything is placed in the Time Capsules, the lids will be closed and sealed with a special Silicone material that takes 24 hours to cure. Friday, March 6 th Chris Cowan and Dave Meador are digging 2 holes for the Time Capsules. They will be renting a gas powered hole digger to make the job easier as it needs to be about 4 feet deep. Time of the dig will be determined. If you want to help with the dig, contact Chris Cowan he will let you know once a time as been selected. Also on that day, melted wax will be placed around the lid edges to help provide additional water protection. A temporary stone will be placed over the holes. Sunday, March 8 th The time capsules will be displayed in the church during both services. Then, immediately after the 10:30 am service, the Time Capsules will be buried in the ground and the temporary stone will be placed above them at the surface. Permanent stone markers for the time capsules will be placed at a later date. Chris Cowan has decided to continue a tradition Fr. Doug started last year. Chris will coordinate the Vigil in the Garden. LOOK FOR A SIGN-UP SHEET IN THE PARISH HALL FOR YOU TO PICK HOURS TO HELP KEEP VIGIL! David Powell will once again be in charge of setting up the garden. David suggests that if anyone is purchasing plants for their yard for spring planting, house plants, or even wanting to purchase plants for the church garden they could bring them to the church by Tuesday, March 31 st so that donated or contributed plants would be there by Wednesday in order for us to set up the Narthex. A Vigil in the Garden 8:00 p.m. Thursday, April 2 through 5:00 p.m. Good Friday, April 3 Prayer is central to our life as a community of faith as we remain constant and connected to our Lord. This Prayer Vigil is derived from the Gospel of Mark 14:37ff where Jesus goes to Gethsemane with his disciples to pray. It is just prior to the passion and Jesus expresses his overwhelming sorrow and asks them to stay and keep watch. So, we too will stay following the service on Maundy Thursday in a garden prepared, to wait and keep watch with the Lord as he journeys to the Passion and Cross on Good Friday.
