1 The Franciscans A Newsletter of St. Francis Episcopal Church, Goldsboro, NC May 2018 Words of Worship How do we do worship at St. Francis Episcopal Church? One way we do it is together. Notice how our worship focuses on us as a Body rather than us as individuals, & remember, each individual part of the Body is important. Reading Morning Prayer alone, as is my habit, I noticed the other day the corporate nature even in our Confession of sin in thought word & deed. Even alone we pray: we confess; we...sinned; we have done; we have left undone; we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves; we are truly sorry & humbly repent...have mercy on us... forgive us; that we may delight in your will, & walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name... Then we ask: Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us..., strengthen us & by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life... In the next day's online Morning Prayer, a hymn asks: Why do we then indulge our fears, suspicions, & complaints? Is he a God, & shall his grace grow weary of his saints? Again we hear we, our... You may hear the words by Issac Watts at morning/18m.html Notice how the Bible points us to understand ourselves as a Body, a unity [community, a common unity] more than us as independent individuals: As God s chosen ones, holy & beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, & patience. Colossians 3:12 For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, & individually we are members one of another. We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us Romans 12:4-6 Also from Romans 12: Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection Bless those who persecute you; bless & do not curse them...live in harmony with one another...do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all... Notice how the prayer attributed to St. Francis points us to our corporate unity, [BCP page 833, prayer 62]: Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Where there is hatred, let us sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is discord, union; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. Grant that we may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen. Peace & Blessings, Marcia+ And this is my prayer: That our love may overflow more & more with knowledge & full insight to help us determine what is best. Philippians 1:9-10 paraphrase
2 2 ~ The Franciscans May 2018 ~ LOVE IN ACTION In the vestry retreat earlier this spring, one of the topics discussed at length was how, as a congregation and family, we could lovingly help, encourage and welcome all to our church family, and to be there in times of illness, emergency, or to support those who need help, either physically, or emotionally. We also discussed how to provide a warm welcome to anyone who visited St. Francis, or were thinking of joining our congregation. As a result of this discussion, the program, Love In Action was developed. Love In Action would provide the following services: 1) Welcome bags to all who visit the church bags to include a St. Francis magnet, a copy of the latest newsletter, a Day By Day booklet, and the business card of the rector, and perhaps some candies, or other little gift as a thank you for visiting the church. 2) For prospective new members/families bake/bring a small loaf of specialty bread, and take it to the potential member/family as a welcome message. 3) Food/meals for emergencies It was discussed to have several church members bake casseroles or prepare meals that can be frozen, in the event that a member has an emergency, and they or their family could use assistance with meals. If it is a planned surgery, etc., we can have folks who specialize in certain dishes/meals to help the individual or family while they are recuperating a meal help list. Another idea is to have fundraisers to purchase gift cards to Wal-Mart, Food Lion, or restaurants to help those in need at a time of stress/crisis to have food or provisions available. 4) For those who do not have transportation, or cannot physically drive, we would like to have volunteers who could transport the person, or persons, to church and return them home. 5) Transportation for medical appointments or hospital stays/outpatient surgery for those who do not have anyone to accompany them; who must have someone at the facility to take the person home, etc. Any other ideas? In order to provide this help for our church family, we will need a committee to organize activities, and volunteers for meal making, transportation, etc. If you would like to be a committee member for this special ministry, please see, call or at or Diana27@windstream.net; or sign up on the sign-up sheet in the parish hall. God Bless!, Vestry Member Moving days for the McRae s As most of you know we have purchased a home on E Walnut St and closing Friday, May 11. If we could have help with clothing, breakables, light weight boxes and hats - on Friday afternoon [2-5] and Saturday [9 -?], it would be much appreciated. Two Men and a Truck are moving furniture and heavy stuff on Monday, May 14.
