1 The Franciscans A Newsletter of St. Francis Episcopal Church, Goldsboro, NC June / July 2018 Why Did I Hit That Cop? The time I fractured my hand punching that deputy sheriff jumped into my mind unexpectedly as I thought about this column. I see it hits home about changes & life s unexpected changes, such as our coming transition from having our fabulous Parish Administrator Corinne Stewart to handle so many areas of our parish life. I planned to write about changes before I learned of the move Corinne & husband Michael will make to South Carolina. The changes in my focus are about our liturgy & why we do some things differently from how they had been done here, as some of you have asked about changes. Like hitting the deputy, I knew what I was doing. I thought. I knew WHY I was doing it: he asked for it! He kept saying: Hit me. Go on, hit me. Hit me harder! Harder! What else would you expect to hear in a women s self-defense class when it s your turn to practice? With so many repetitions, I lost my perspective. I lost form & twisted my fist a bit so I was a bit off -balance hitting him. When we do the same thing over & over in worship, we can get off-balance, lose perspective of why we do what we do so that it loses its punch, its impact on our minds & hearts. What a blessing the Episcopal church gives us in liturgy with changing seasons so we have differences in scriptures, colors in banners, altar, lectern, pulpit & clergy vestments. This helps draw our attention to a particular season. [Notice the 4 wonderful paintings by & Kristine Wright that we see as we leave the sanctuary.] It s like the wisdom of the woodpecker we see in the photo a friend sent me: Sometimes we have to do what we do differently, get a different perspective. Ex: I use Eucharistic Prayer A, B, C & D as suggested by Howard E. Galley in The Ceremonies of the Church: A Guide to Celebration. Prayer A emphasizes the cross, so we use it in Lent; B emphasizes Jesus incarnation, so it s appropriate for Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Easter. C emphasizes creation & God as revealed in Hebrew scripture & is recommended in green season. D has fewer responses, special prayers & is suggested, among other occasions, for Maundy Thursday & funerals. Note: A & B have a Proper Preface [see small print italics pages 361 & 367]. This is when I flip pages to read the Proper Preface, such as for the season or the event [pages ]. Often I see some of you trying to find where I am. That s where I am. During Green season I m on page 377 or 378. When I was first here & you asked how I wanted X,Y,Z done in worship. I d say: Let s do it as you ve been doing it. Why change what s working? I recall the 1 st change after having the rush of people bringing up not just offerings of bread, wine & funds, but also empty chalice, paten, veil, etc. With such a rush of people setting things on the altar, I rushed to arrange them to reduce delay of Eucharist. So I asked Altar Guild to set up the chalice so I can calmly arrange before offerings of bread, wine & funds are brought. It s an adjustment of our focus. Peace & Blessings, Marcia+

2 2 ~ The Franciscans June / July 2018 ~ Dear Parishioners: The bills have been paid, the thank you notes have been written, and the dust has settled after a successful April 7 event that brought Rais Bhuiyan and World Without Hate to Goldsboro. It all began from Marcia s sermon which struck a chord with, who questioned how a person shot in the face and left for dead could forgive his assailant. What is the potential of forgiveness in our parish, our community, and our world? The Deanery awarded a grant to help fulfil Diana s vision of having Rais speak in Goldsboro and share his experience. Thanks to many who supported the effort from our own parish, from St. Andrew s, from St. Stephen s, from co-sponsors Impact Teens, and from friends in the community, the event brought together more than 100 people. Christians and Muslims and others seeking answers to end violence heard about compassion and empathy, the tools of World Without Hate. Important outcomes of the effort included financial support for the work of the Goldsboro Police Activity League and Impact Teens as these groups encourage young men and boys away from gangs into sports and other activities. The audience left with hope that problems can be solved, especially if the work of World Without Hate can continue. As Marcia reminds us on Sundays, our worship now is ended; our service now begins. Thanks specifically to the St. Francis ECW, to Stan and Debbie Stedner, and to Marcia and John who provided housing for our guests, Rais and Jessica Bhuiyan. We appreciate all who attended and supported the event. Don Skinner and Rev. Marcia are coordina ng the purchase of the food for the backpacks. We need at least three helpers Tuesday, June 5 th to pack the bags. Join Don at 10:00 am in our Parish Hall. Don will deliver the backpacks to the school Wednesday, June 6 th.
