1 The Franciscans A Newsletter of St. Francis Episcopal Church, Goldsboro, NC August 2017 What s Urgent? What s Important? We Have Good News to Share! I have good news to share with you! Thank you, Vestry, for your decision July 17, which makes this good news possible! But first, let s chat in print about an important topic! During worship July 16, we thought about what s urgent versus what s important. Reality check: the urgent often keeps us from doing what s important. One of the most important actions for us as Jesus hands & feet is the work of prayer, which enhances & serves as a vital part of our work of ministry within the church & beyond. Prayer is more than just thinking about something. Prayer is action even when our action is quiet, meditative, self-emptying prayer. In addition to self-emptying pray, there are many kinds of prayer, as you know just looking at lists of prayers in our Book of Common Prayer. Ex: We pray for the needs of others. We pray, giving thanks for God s blessings. We say grace at meals to thank God for the blessing of food. Like food, prayer is vital to our lives. Prayer feeds our souls. Prayer gives us a break. Getting away from the urgent to have time for the important work of rest & recreation also gives us a breath of fresh air, a break. Remember: Jesus & the disciples take breaks & go away from the clamor of work. Thanks to our Vestry s wisdom, the opportunity to have a breath of fresh air, time for refreshment, recreation, rest, fellowship with your St. Francis brothers & sisters & a unique look at prayer will be more affordable at our annual Parish Retreat. The Vestry approved using reserved funds to help off-set costs of each of our adults ($50 per adult) staying at Trinity Center Sept & total cost for youth/grandchildren under age 18. At the retreat, we will launch our look at A.J. Jacobs The Year of Living Biblically: One Man's Humble Quest to Follow the Bible as Literally as Possible. Thanks to a planning session with Sr. Warden Crissie Lewis, we have an interesting way to introduce this study, using a utilitarian item almost everyone uses daily & definitely one the author mentions. A writer for Esquire magazine & an agnostic of Jewish heritage, Jacobs takes a year to learn more about his heritage. Chapters are brief, cover one month & are divided by different days with a brief quotation from the Bible [including the New Testament] about a particular topic, some of which lead him to interesting encounters. For example, he has a Jewish fabric specialist inspect his clothes so he doesn t wear a mixture of fabrics or forbidden fabrics; he fulfills a required blood sacrifice by.[i won t spoil it for you. I ll let you read it yourself.] Jacobs also asks a Jehovah s Witness to come to his home to talk & keeps asking questions of the man for more than 2 hours. Early in this adventure the reader sees changes in Jacobs life. The required regular daily prayers challenge him. As Wikipedia* says: Prayer as a service of the heart is in principle a Torah-based commandment... mandatory for Jewish men & women You shall serve God with your whole heart. Deut. 11:13. In general,... Jewish men are obligated to [pray 3] times a day within specific time ranges * Accessed: 18 July, We will meet monthly to discuss what we read. Details coming soon. You also have shorter learning opportunities, which I hope may involve our other Episcopal congregations & our Lutheran brothers & sisters. These are our 5-session brown-bag lunches Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m.: In Aug. Embracing an Adult Faith: Marcus Borg on What It Means to Be Christian In Sept., ending St. Francis Day in Oct.: Embracing an Alternative Orthodoxy: Richard Rohr on the Legacy of St. Francis. Our 4-session 6:30 p.m. dinner & Advent study begins Nov. 29 [before Advent & ends Dec. 13 [we will have Blue Christmas the next Wednesday]. Sessions look at Bible Women chapters on Sampson s mother, Mary of Bethany, Elizabeth & Jesus mother Mary. Bible Women study is appropriate for men! Rev. Marcía O. McRae Thank you for your lovely sending of Walker & Charlotte Campbell, your welcoming of new folk to this Body of Christ, & your support for Roger & Gail Riddle during his long recovery from surgery!

They help Christians to remember that Christmas is the celebration of Jesus' birthday. They were first made in 1957 by Mrs. Frances Kipps Spencer at Ascension Lutheran Church in Danville, Virginia. She came up with the word Chrismon, which is a combination of Christ and monogram, and means symbols of Christ.

6 6 ~ The Franciscans August 2017 ~ Vestry Voice We are now accepting nominations for the Vestry. Elections will be held during our annual parish meeting in November. We are in the exploration phase of the feasibility of a paved walkway from the church to the garden. The ground is so uneven and contains many roots several people have expressed concern over the safety. Marcia is working on her plans for future educational options for our parish. See her article for more details. Parish Weekend is September at Trinity Center. The vestry has decided to underwrite the cost of all adults by $50, children and grandchildren under the age of 18 will be free. Please sign up quickly as we have a limited number of rooms. Registration form is on page 2 of this newsletter, or on the table at the Church entrance or Parish Hall. We have added a table in the pantry area of the Parish Hall as a Take me Table, and it means just that, anything on the table is up for grabs. If you have anything at home you no longer want or need and think someone could use it, bring it. The last Sunday of every month the table will be cleared and everything left taken to Injoy, and we will start over again. The exception will be no table in October, since there is too much going on leading up to CITF. Crissie Lewis, Sr. Warden St. Francis Parishioners, July 24, 2017 Chris Cowan has resigned from the vestry effective immediately due to his hectic and demanding work schedule. Chris has been working 10+ hours a day, in addition to many nights and weekends. Since this hectic schedule will continue for a while as the Ag Center and new 911 office are being built, he felt it was best to step to the side and allow someone else to fill his remaining term of 1.5 years. He will continue to be present and serve in the church, just stepping back a bit. We are excited to announce that has agreed to fill Chris term. The vestry looks forward to working with David, and sincerely thanks Chris for his important contributions to St. Francis Church. Crissie Lewis, Senior Warden 5-Session Study in August Rev. Marcia is offering a 5-Session mid-week study in August: "Embracing an Adult Faith: Marcus Borg on What It Means to Be Christian". Participants may bring your lunch if you want. Book is available on Amazon -Participants-Workbook/dp/ or - Church Publishing. Contact Rev. Marcia if you need her to order a book for you. + Study in September The 5-session study September 6 thru October 4 will be "Embracing an Alternative Orthodoxy: Richard Rohr on the Legacy of St. Francis". The final session is on St. Francis' Feast Day. This book is also available on Amazon or Church Publishing. ie=utf8&condition=new&qid=&sr= Contact Rev. Marcia if you need her to order this book for you. Thank you JOHN KOEGEL for installing our new electric Sanctuary light!
